Excellent explanation of what, why and how - thank you. Just followed your lead in servicing my GS Adventure, I also had 4 years of an RT valve servicing. It occurred to me today - it can't really be carbon build up because the minimal lube I have to apply, even to a totally seized valve wouldn't have enough time to penetrate down to the inner shaft. It's got to be water based corrosion! Nice one.

Thanks for taking the time to do this video. My 50,000 mile 2016 GS still has the original flap valve & headers. The valve has never seized and is still as free as the day I bought the bike. Bike has been used in all weathers including salty roads. I can only assume that the reason for this is that I always start the bike after washing it and run it for 5 minutes or so before putting it away. I guess this is enough to evaporate and water that is sitting in the mechanism that could cause corrosion. It gets a coat of graphite lube every 12 months when I take the end can off to clean it but that's the only maintenance it gets. Maybe I've just been lucky?

Hi Carl, Here's a new reason for sticky valves.The Servo Motor is faulty and does not provide a smooth motion of the valve,therefore it's not sticking and the remedy is a new or good functioning second hand one to be checked in the workshop. It's that black plastic thing you pointed out near the exhaust! I have a 2014 GS LC and that is exactly what happened. So if the bikes fairly new it's a warranty case.Me and the chief mechanic with his connections found me one 3 years younger! Happy riding!

So on my GSA 1250 which I never have gone over 6,000 RPM'S with, I went up to 7,000 and then 8,000. Do I need to go up that high to clean the system as you had suggested or can I keep it just over 5,000 RPM'S or so? Is the valve more open at 9,000 than say 6,000? The higher RPM at 8,000 was really rattling my teeth! You had said once a month to go Maximum RPM. Does that mean 9,000 RPM ? Thank You!!

I Worked at motorcycle shop in early 70’s and there was a bulletin that came out from the manufacturer to explain why so many mufflers were needing to be replace on nearly new bikes. Hello and welcome to the channel, it great depends on the motorbike… but in general the answer is no, because modern motorbikes use complex engine management systems that provide engine braking via other systems like the throttle bodies and fuel maps. I have a 2019 (March) 1250GS, so is Euro 4 compliant, not 5, and mine has an exhaust valve the same as yours. What was the purpose of this valve? Fantastic and informative video (as usual)!
@justthewayitis

Hello MrT, perhaps I should have been clearer in my comments, nearly all motorbikes have a noise limit they need to comply with, so yes your Euro 4 GS needs to also meet a noise limit, the valve does this on your GS to. Thank you for your feedback much appreciated 🙋🏻♂️

Some motorbikes really benefit from breathing more freely, but during my testing on the GS1250 I could see no real benefit on this engine apart from increasing noise. Maybe a full Akrapovic titanium system plus an ECU fuel map plus free flow air filter might yield a 10% increase in power but that’s going to cost a fair amount. But you could check out your local R1250R forum to see if anyone has done this and ask them for there thoughts 💭 Carl

Hey Carl, help me understand how the ECU can tell the flapper isn't moving other than that the servo motor isn't moving back & forth. Is there a sensor that would recognize the reduced back pressure?
@justthewayitis
4 ай бұрын
Hi Bill, it’s the servo motor that’s looking for a set amount to movement no other sensors checking the operation. Bmw did make a software change from what I can tell that deactivated the fail warning on the valve. Due to the high number of owners with problems. I can’t be sure but that’s what I have been told. So if you have no warnings on your bike, great 👍

What this proves is that the stylists who are involved in the designing and look of the bike have screwed them up by eliminating “FENDERS” that would or used to protect the rider and bike. @justthewayitis
7 ай бұрын
Hi Paul , it’s possible and easy for you to check. The valve needs to operate freely. Plus… Other known causes are aftermarket under engine crash plates (skid plates) and some of the rear shock protection devices (mud protection) have been reported to restrict airflow and increase heat levels on the right side. Also the gear you use is important. I wear full height leather boots and trousers all year. I’m aware of some heat but it’s not excessive for me. Hope this helps Carl Ps, for owners that really can’t live with the heat, they often fit a decat set of header pipes.

Also mine appears to have no vertical up and down movement. Maybe it’s just a matter of lubricating it with the copper spray and it will free up. Thanks for all the informative videos.

Hi Jed, if it’s working correctly it should return back to the fully open position, turn clockwise, release and it should fully return. Slight Vertical movement will probably return once you have lubricated . Carl

Carl, following on from our earlier chat - just so say, I was very interested in your exhortation to make sure to "use the full rev range once a month" - I'm sure that's something which will have contributed to my EV's demise, along with washing... there was certainly a lot more carbon on my finger tip than yours! But I really had no idea that I should regularly be cranking the engine up to 8-9,000 rpm - I don't think I ever have - it has so much low-down torque I'm probably rarely ever above 5,000 rpm if I'm honest! And there was me thinking I was just treating my engine gently and kindly... Anyway, I duly went for a thrash down the bypass the other day - up to 8,000 rpm in 2nd gear at 70 mph, which really seemed totally unnatural to me. How long should I be holding it there on my monthly remedial rides - or is it just a case of momentarily get there and then ease off? This is a new world to me!

Hi David, yes momentarily, the idea here is the use most of the rev range but 7,000 to 7500 is ok, at least a couple of times a month. Smooth and progressive in 2nd or 3rd up and down. It’s hard to describe the procedure lol. Yes there is so much torque is easy to use less than 5k all the time. But it will help keep your bike healthy. Carl

This is a great video and demonstrates the valve really well. My R1250RT had a sticking valve at 12k miles despite me riding it "enthusiastically"... Maybe it was due to corrosion (from washing?) however I don't have the inclination to strip and lubricate the valve every year (I do at least 12k mile pa). So I removed it and installed a healer. Very little cost and saves a whole pile of maintenance time. Bike runs great and I cant hear any increase in noise. Thanks for taking the time to research, film and explain this subject

I dont think BMW has done a good job in designing the valve wiring and servo motor. It looks to me that they have exposed wiring and the servo to road salts and high heat zones which will not serve the servo motor a long life. The Multistrada modification Carl did is the real deal. It’s the most cost effective method of getting rid of the flapper but leaving the servo and valve shaft in place.

Hi Ross, thank you 🙏. You could use a exhaust valve delete device ( check any bmw gs forum for information) that would fix the warning light, and the MOT test will still pass with the valve open as the increase in noise at idle speed is barely noticeable. This poorly designed, non-serviceable item was at least easily replaced on the pre-LC twins as a stub. BMW carried over this dreadful design incorporating it into the header/cat assembly. I was quoted £1,800 plus fitting on my 2014 GSA LC with just 7,000 miles on the clock and, conveniently, not covered by my expensive extended warranty. The technician has sprayed the outside with grease in a half-arsed attempt to free it. One of several reasons I ceased to be a modern BMW owner. I have two old airheads that were well made and stood the test of time.

Excellent and very informative video. I watched your Ducati one before this while searching for info on whether to use an exhaust servo deleting mechanism. I see you removed the flapper completely on your Ducati. I have a 2020 multi 950s which is euro 5. Do I have to disconnect the cables to the servo to keep the flapper in the open position as well as fitting the healtech exhaust servo eliminator? Or will just fitting the exhaust servo eliminator keep it open? I’m keeping the standard can on as like yourself don’t think there is any point in changing it for a termignoni. Thanks in advance 👍🏻
@justthewayitis
10 ай бұрын
Hi Shaun, good morning The device is generally used by owners who delete or completely remove the exhaust valve. This could be to save weight or to be able to install a completely different exhaust system and maybe remove the catalytic converter. In your case it’s important to first check what your valve is doing while the engine is running at idle. So remove the rear end can and have a look. Is it fully closed ? If yes, then you will need to wire and lock it fully open once you have installed the device. Is it fully open ? If yes, then you probably do not need to wire it open or disconnect the cables. (easier installation for you) Each bike is different in its base running mode, some valves are pulled OPEN and some are pulled CLOSED. I would send an email to Healtech to confirm 100% your question. Good luck with your changes, the 950 will certainly sound different after the install. I hope this helps, kind regards Carl
