Cajon Pass is a steep mountain railroad connecting the Los Angeles Basin to the California High Desert and points east. This route was originally constructed as part of the Santa Fe railroad's original transcontinental railroad. Today, the railroad is one of the busiest in the country, seeing up to 90-100 BNSF and Union Pacific trains a day.
These scenes show two BNSF intermodal trains at a location known as Summit. From here, the eastbound train has a short easy climb from the valley the summit lies in to the top of the mesa walls above before it will descend into the high desert. The westbound train is beginning it's steep descent down Cajon Pass and into the Los Angeles basin.
