My grandparent were from eastern Europe and never lost their Yiddish. I love the sound of Yiddish songs even when I don't understand the words. Thanks for these songs.

Ich freu mich sooo sehr. Habe vor einigen Monaten bei einem Konzert von Daniel in Wien diese Version gehört und war seitdem voller Hoffnung, es auch irgendwann zuhause hören zu können. Es berührt mich immer wiede, wie schön Daniel Kahn mit den Sprachen spielt und wieviel Gefühl seine musikalischen Interpretationen haben. Vielen Dank!

They always told us as kids that Bob Dylan was a German who moved to America. I think this misunderstanding comes from the fact that "Robert Zimmermann" is actually a perfectly German name, the first name as well as the last. I wonder if I am the only one or if this has happened to other Germans as well...

Szulem Josef, I write this answer in English so that others may benefit from your question about why the English meaning of "I will be released" sounds like a prediction of the future, whereas the Yiddish translation minimizes the future tense, sacrificing correct grammar to poetry. The language of the prison metaphor has more than one meaning: i.e. that the prisoner expects to be released from his physical prison. You suggest the English should be translated into Yiddish as: "I will (using the future tense) be freed (from prison)." But since this is a metaphorical prison, as well as perhaps a real one, the prisoner certainly wants to be free, may even expect one day to be free, or "released", or to be "freed" - but perhaps he does not necessarily expect to be released from this physical prison. That is why the correct "literal" translation of the words into Yiddish should say, as they do: "I will be freed", which may include being released from physical prison in the future, but more importantly means "I will be free (or freed)" ultimately in every way, physically and spiritually. The metaphorical "freedom" includes all meanings which for this prisoner includes the ultimate release, the freedom of death. Zay gezint, Matys Velvel
