Don't laugh, but Barry Manilow did a cover of this too. He does it as a pretty piano ballad that really sounds like a different song. It is totally Bob Seger's song, and I've always loved it, but the Manilow version is nice too.

How come there was so many writers back then now seems like nobody has an original idea anywhere? When's the last good movie? A few OK....none worth buying.

Back in the 50s up through the 80s, record companies were more about the music than the money. Sure, they wanted to make money, but the record companies were more willing to take chances and see what the public's response would be. Back then, record companies welcomed creativity and originality. If one company turned a band down, another would pick them up. Some record companies made huge fortunes with bands that other labels turned down. Enter the digital age. Fewer actual musicians. Artists relied more on synthesizers, sequencers, samplers and computers. Record companies became more about the money. they have staff song writers who found a "formula that works" and they keep rehashing that same formula over and over.Another thing I've noticed is too many artists seem to be trying to write the next 'anthem of a generation' ( and failing horribly). People don't realize that songs like Comfortably Numb were not intended to be the anthem of a generation. According to Jimmy Page, Stairway to Heaven was never supposed to be released as a single. They didn't even intend it to get any airplay. Stairway was written and recorded solely for art's sake.

I come from a family of musicians and during those big Filipino family parties there would always be music! My dad and 2 of his brothers would pull out the guitars and the 4th brother would get behind the piano and this is one of the songs they would play. Thank you for bringing back some great memories!

To me, the song's words do sound like a one-night-stand , but he's also singing, very openly, about being lonely and longing for love, so I don't think he's *just* talking about "getting it on" here. I'm old enough to remember some of the late '70s and early '80s, and the not-always-wise choices that many people made out of loneliness and desperation. This song reminds me so much of that era, especially as it did come out in '78.

I think the song is about two people finding a very strong connection. It's exciting, terrifying, etc.. What the heck does it mean? But when you connect, the vibe switches to "let's not worry about the bigger picture. we got this moment rn, so let's be present af."

I saw him twice on his good bye tour. I am originally from Michigan and I had to hear him say good bye at home. He sang "the famous final scene" there (not in stl where I saw him earlier). I cried thru the entire song. He is a legend. No one comes close to singing the stages of our lives like seger.

I always took it as the end of a relationship. Different goals, grew apart, & now it's one last night together. Him maybe finding it a little tougher. Whatever the scenario it's a bittersweet situation.💙

Sounds like they were two souls looking for love and decided it wasn't with each other. Also sounds like she is ready to leave and he's asking her to stay for one more night and then they can go on their separate ways. Anything Bob Seger gets a thumbs up from me.
