Everyone is praising the combination of comedy and sincerity, but I really want to point out how Mariner's and Boimler's maturity really has a chance to shine through this episode. Season 1 version of LD characters were brash, young, and immature in their own ways. But now Boimler is really learning how to stand up for himself and take initiative, even with his fanboying breaking temporal rules. And Mariner being way more cool and level headed, actually diving into the portal to save Boimler (causing a slight complication), and encouraging Uhura to take a break, not because Mariner wants to slack off (although that's probably a reason), but because they hit a wall and legit need a bit of self-care, with a few drinks of course. Everyone says Lower Decks is just Rick and Morty in Star Trek, but its a lot smarter and with way more heart than people expected. And I kinda love it.

@irregulargamer1352 One of the major things about Lower Decks that makes me always feel weird when watching the show is that it's clearly spoofing a 44-minute show in a 22-minute format. I know it's super inside-baseball to be thinking about that writing thing, but whenever they do a pastiche on Star Trek I'm thinking about how much more *time* the classical shows have to just let the characters be. You can't do the root beer scene on Lower Decks, it was literally added to fill out the episode so it could reach 44 minutes. Granted, sometimes it really works. A 44-minute show would have probably felt compelled to explain the 'murder bug drinking game' and the scene is just so much more effective with Tendi quietly dominating at it with no leadup, and we still get a beautiful character moment from her "Yes! I *love* being soft!" - we can easily infer how the game works. There can be advantages to the 22-minute format, at least some of which are 'you have to only create 22 minutes worth of content.' But Star Trek as a series has always leaned heavily on the advantages a 44-minute format confers, so seeing something in a 22-minute format in the same setting is just... so weird.

What truly made this an amazing episode, not just as a crossover but as a Star Trek story, is that it’s still got sincere moments, moments where there isn’t something crazy happening, like a space battle, or a holodeck malfunction, or some kind of terrifying creature haunting the crew. It’s something thats always made Trek special to me. Between the moments of action, theres always moments where you just see the crew being themselves. Either having fun, connecting with each other, or just living. It makes the characters feel like actual people.

Yeah, and even with all the humor in the episode when Boimler and Mariner tell Pike that-and confirm that they are from the future where he follows his fate-it actually makes them among the very few people with whom he can talk more openly. At least personally, I like to think that before they went home, Pike DID talk with them more, but we’re not going to hear it because (I know they aren’t real but figuratively) the three of them don’t want anyone else to know. I mean, when Mariner goes home I get the feeling she hid the whole thing from her superiors and Boimler went along with it. Both nearly messing up the timeline AND having an intimate heart to heart with Captain Pike about things that probably no one else besides Una KNEW for a fact he was already aware of would be reasons even rule-following Boimler would agree not to tell.

That Brad...he's like Beckett in that...He's much smarter and capable than he seems. And Mariner, something freaked her out to the point of doing anything to stay an ensign and away from 'Ranking Up'. Her Academy friend from season 1 was right, she should have been the first of them to become a captain. And...Brad is right about 'You never know how many birthdays...or just Days left' Try to celebrate each one in some way. Be sure your love ones KNOW that you love them and when ever possible, cut out the fake friends and forget about the 'friends' that have already forgotten You. I like to say that 'The Only True immortality we might obtain is through our children'...but its also through what we do. When we teach a person or persons something Useful. When we do a favor for anyone, your friend or a total stranger. You have done something kind and good and that action will help that person do things that they might Not have been able to do. They will remember The Stranger...as you remember people who did something and that allowed You to do something you might not have been able to do with out the help you received from a Stranger. They won't remember your name, if they ever knew it anyway. But...Our actions or in-actions...have effects on others that they will carry with them. Celebrate Life. Let your loved ones know that You Love Them. Help and teach others good things when you can and IF You should. And you will become Immortal. My Boss...he taught me what I needed to know and had me do what I needed for me to have a career. Before him, I was a cashier and a gas pump jockey...not really a Career and that kept me from getting married. I wouldn't want to marry minimum waged person with no changes on their horizon for a better tomorrow....and don't give me that 'Well, YOU could have changed their future" I was in no position to change anyone's future but mine and even that was a struggle. BUT....My Boss...he took me from 'general labor' to 'Senior Water Plant Operator' in the company....I had a career...a good one....and it was all because of him and his actions and teaching and tolerances. His actions will live on because those actions allowed me to make more positive actions for people that I encountered. So...to me...he and his actions go on and on...he is in a real sense; Immortal...even though he's passed away ten years ago. Be like Brad, celebrate with those people as often as you can because one day, You won't be able to...like with Pike's father...like a lot of fathers.

it goes further back than that. during season 2 of discovery which takes place 1 year before SNW pike went to that klingon monastary and took a time crsytal. not only did it show him his future but it locked in his future. so in theory pike couldn't even die because his future is locked in.

Everybody talks quieter in the TOS era? Does that mean the Cerritos is loud and they have to talk loud to hear each other?

I might be wrong, but I think it's a joke about differences between voice acting for animation and performing live on-set.

What you can get away with on a ship where your mom or your best friend's mom is the captain is MUCH more than what you can get away with on a ship full of people that you're already kind of annoying.

It’s also just the difference between being on the Enterprise vs, well any other vessel. The Enterprise crew is the pick of the litter.

Man if I was transported into Star Trek world I’d be super giddy but then if I realized that of all the ships I was on Archer’s enterprise I would throw a Grade-A Hissy 😂 “noooo! Man, come ON! The uniforms are so boring and everything’s so dark and desaturated! I HATE IT!! At least Discovery has Tig Notaro!!”

This isnt a complaint. Just an observation. The parallels between Pike and his father and Kirk and his father in the Kelvin timeline don't strike me as pure coincidence to me, and not done intentionally at all (!) 🤔

I really don't care for Lower Decks as it just comes across as a parody to me, but this was great. Best episode of Lower Decks, hands down. Great episode of Strange New Worlds. And I loved how they handled the 'animation' issue with a psychedelic at the end.

No, they weren't trying to steal the shuttle, they were trying to use the shuttle's communication subnet, which is separate from the Enterprise's, to contact the Orions.

There's a funny Inside joke when they were talking about how "everyone talks so slow and quietly". Whenever I travel, people sometimes talks about how fast and loud my family speaks. Turns out Californians just speak faster and louder than most Americans, and Boimler and Mariner serve on a California Class ship!

It's also poking fun at the different tones, since SNW is a heartfelt drama and Lower Decks is a goofy comedy, and each work on different filters.
