If price is that much of a concern, it may be worth considering just getting a corded tool. E: In fact, that's a relatively solid reason to get one of these: Buy a $100-150 corded drill (sds if necessary) for anything that requires appreciable amounts of power, get one of these purely for the sake of convenience when putting those internal hex thingies into ikea furniture and pre-drilling sub 5mm woodscrews. I'd still much rather get a 10.8V or 12V makita or whatever, but that's mostly a question of how often it gets used and how much cash is burning in your pocket.

At an injection molding plant i used to work at we made some of Ikea’s stuff and they were much more quality-focused than people think. I remember one of the products was made of white PPGF 25% (if my memory serves me right, was 5-6 years ago) and the sprue went into a grinder that ground it down and led the granulate back up into the injection unit to minimize waste. That ground down dust itched like NOTHING i have ever experienced. Nothing even comes close. As soon as the damn stuff ended up on the skin it would develop a rash if you even thought about itching it. Glass fiber is a bitch sometimes and i do not miss that damn thing

I bought one of these a couple of years ago. We were visiting my mother in law and she needed a cupboard installed. Didn't have any tools so I gave this a chance. Michael Goels, Holy feck, is that true! I remember this one dreaded day the wife said "We need to go to Ikea". She had the shopping list printed out, just over $150. "Not to shabby", I thought, but I guess one "needs" certain "accessoires", so I got a little pissed as the bill was just shy of $500!! Perhaps she exploited a moment of weakness on my side, by filling up the cart as I was eating "meat"-balls in the cafeteria.

Never seen a tool take more shit than a Hilti. We use both the cordless drill and corded combihammer at work and man does those hold up great! Left in rain, drowned for a few days, frozen stuck in water over the weekend with temperatures at -30c, exposed to extreme heat form propane torches, tossed off the roof at 15m and continually running for 18 hours straight 5 days a week, mind you on the combihammer we had to replace 3 extension cords cause they couldn't handle the extreme usage. and the tool last around 3-5 years with that usage every week.

Ikea actually sells a few different models of cordless drill/screwdrivers. The one AvE dissected in this video is the bottom of the line 7.2 volt model (about $20 US). There's also a slightly more upscale 14.4 volt model (about $40 US) which has a two speed gearbox as well as a hammer drill (about $65 US) that also has a 14.4 volt batter pack. They all use lithium-ion batteries. Ikea also sells a basic cordless screwdriver (about $10 US) which has a 3.6 volt battery and which they do not have the temerity to refer to as a drill. I have no idea how useful the hammer drill model would be as a hammer drill, but I do have one of their 14.4 volt drills that I use for lighter duty tasks and it seems to work just fine. I have a Craftsman 1/2" corded drill that I can use for heavier jobs, and I just finished resurrecting a low end drill press (roughly Harbor Freight grade) that I found next to one of the dumpsters behind the apartment building where I live. The Ikea drills are probably just the thing for an apartment dweller who wants to hang pictures, drive screws and do some other light work. They're certainly not what I would use in a professional capacity for anything other than a cheap cordless screw driver, though. For that sort of work the 2 speed 14.4 volt model seems reasonably capable and it really does feel nice in the hand, too.

I have one of these! Four years and it's still going. Frankly, it's perfect for what it was really designed for: assembling Ikea furniture. Our proper hand drill is too heavy and powerful for assembling that stuff, and I don't need another fancy drill. This thing does the trick, and we were able to assemble our whole apartment in a day without killing our wrists. One of these days I might get a Skil mini drill/electric screwdriver. My old lady had one of these for putting picture frames together it died. so she bought a Bosch drill all it did is tear the screws out of the frame so it's in the draw and I rebuilt the old girl still going. I may of had a couple of parts left over.

I owned the bigger 14.4V for technician work, it would cut out sometimes but it was good enough for someone to steal at a jobsite.

Harbor Freight sells a battery powered drill for $20 USD. It's actually quite nice, lots of torque, and it's put together like a "real" drill. Unlike this one which looks more like a sex toy.

I've got one of these, very useful around the house for screws. Can't argue with what it does at that price.

I really like the cheapie 20V Black+Decker drill for the general purpose light duty task. We run a bunch of them in a machine shop for torquing little screws in fixtures and whatnot and they hold up really well. Things are around $35 on sale with a battery and charger.

First lithium powered drill i ever bought was a ryobi 12v yrs of beating fixin crap in the house for my better 3/4 part. It surprised me when i did some shelves one battery about 30 3" screws into pine studs and it didn't even complain.
