i love this song - written by Richard Thompson, and sung by an angel ....

She is a superior and most affecting talent, no question - looks like a red-haired Meryl Streep. And Richard Thompson is a stellar composer who understands the human heart and can translate its yearning and sorrow into music so beautiful and poignant it's almost painful (but irresistable) to listen to. Class, class, class all the way.

I was never a huge Bonnie fan. But I do think she has the best version of this song. And many have done it. Good tuned guitars make a song special. A lot of people overlook guitar tuning when there is more than one playing. Very enjoyable to listen to her version.

Love the song, Ms Raitt takes to an unequaled height. My husband died in 1994 and I discovered it after, have listened to this song hundred of times. After all these years it still moves me. Thank you to both artists, Thomson and Raitt.

The first time I heard this song was on the David Gilmour DVD. Both my wife and I cried a wee bit. ...it's not a small song. I'd have thought the same if I'd heard this version, and indeed Mr Thompson's original. I've never heard David Gilmour do a duet with a women...........Please think about this one Sir
@equatorman64

@loomisaero I am also in agreement... David Gilmour's version is supercharged with a much more soulful melody, and the guitar part is sprinkled with notes than further enhances the song. But then he is the master of melodic lead guitar.

I have to vote for Ms. Raitt on this one! I have loved this song since I bought her "I Can't Make You Love Me" album back in the day...damn it's been 20 years yet. I think the Celtic roots in her voice give her the edge over the other versions and what the heck is wrong with the guitar work? The only thing missing from this performance is a proper mic check, which apparently no one did, 'cause the guitars sound great but there is static in the vocal track.
