Gotta say, this thing really exceeded my expectations. The PM500 could easily be used for broadcast-quality VO work, and at a

Great video, Andrew! And great blooper, lol. I'm no expert with mics or sound but the PM500 sounded clearer to me. I think I'm sold as a starting point.

Sounds great! I’m looking at budget microphones and this might be something to consider.

Andrew, thanks for this comparison… that Maono performed far better than I would have expected. Your technique of alternating mics throughout the video really helped to get a handle on how the PM500 stacks up! I honestly couldn’t tell the difference. Maono would be smart to also promote this as an entry-level voiceover mic!

The mics this reminds me of most are actually the CAD e100 series, which likewise use electret capsules. This capsule looks the same as the one in the E100sx, but without the high end roll off that makes the CAD sound dark. I'd be interested to know the self-noise in dB (20u Vrm isn't a nomenclature I'm familiar with)? In terms of budget, this is coming in around SE X1S (UK at least) and Neat Worker Bee 2 money (~£90). The Neat has the most comparable accessory kit, the SE requiring the additional isolation pack.

Great content as always, Andrew. Thanks for the perspective. It's good to shake up our ideals and ignore "traditional" labels for the sake of tradition. Tech is always changing.

When I first saw the mic, it look a bit like a Lewitt but wierd pop filter.

Surprising - it's great to see how they have taken user feedback and improved the product. I also dig the way you have the dual mount on the boom - seems to work out pretty well. :) Thanks for sharing your impression. (sorry you bit your tongue in the process)

Yeah. I really like the Gator Frameworks 1-to-2 bar. Super cheap, and fantastically utilitarian: tinyurl.com/yp22xu9m

Impressive indeed! I do miss the brightness of the Lewitt in the unfair head-to-head (I'm biased towards brighter mics 9 times out of 10), but without that direct A/B I'm sure I would love it, and regardless I can immediately hear use cases for it.

As a retired sound engineer of some 50 yrs it is great to hear and see what I would consider to be a pro test by a pro V/O artist and the Maono to me is a real winner........At the B B C the most asked question with sound was " whats the best Mic to use "? The answer " the one that does the job YOU want it to Do ......Well done Sir with a truly great review

It's a surprisingly good mic, _especially_ at that price-point. Glad you liked the video, and appreciate you taking the time to comment...

Great review, Andrew! I definitely feel like the difference between these two mics are diminishing returns; in my opinion, the Lewitt isn't 2.66x as good as the Maono. Definitely seems like the kind of mic you can use for multiple applications; if I didn't already have my TLM 103 for VO and using my Stellar X2 for at my desk, I would consider picking this up.

In fairness, it was an apples to oranges shoot-out. If I had a Lewitt 440 Pure, that's would be more dollar-to-dollar (the 440 and 441 are very similar, so I still think my 441 is representative.) You can normally get a 440 for about $260, so the difference from that to the PM500 is about $100. Still, I could easily see the argument for saving even that $100...

Is the Lewitt filter not a spaced dual layer with tiny holes like the original R0de NT1 model was? I found the R0de unit can divert the air flow very effectively despite it's close-ish proximity.

Nope. Single layer stamped metal. Nicely manufactured, but wholly inadequate...

The Rode one is also nearly 2 inches from the diaphragm.

@@liamstrain Yep. Issue there is two-fold: 1) It's a mesh screen, which is less effective, and 2) Rode cages are something like 22ga wire, which leaves more of the diaphragm exposed.

Wow for $150 it seems like a great mic. Whenever I get my space treated better so I can grab a LDC this will definitely be a contender! Also, Bandrew would like to have a word with you about your plosives test phrase... haha.

Whoa, that built-in pop filter was really good! The Lewitt's was good, don't get me wrong, but that Maono, as you said, is absolutely worth something. $150 for a mic like this is a really, really good price. Couple of suggestions for ya, Andrew: MOAR MIC REVIEWS! Also, tongue biting sucks. You got any tips to share on how to cope with it? I admittedly bite my tongue more than I should, and finding tips online has been oddly difficult, partly because if you search up anything like that online, what's one of the top results? **Cancer**
