Thanks for your review, it was by far the best one on youtube! I don't know if my headphones are just not that good or if there's some youtube compression going on, but I really couldn't hear much of the resonant frequencies you mentioned. Also thought it was close to the NT1 and much better than the Bai Fei. There's a sale of the PM500 for around ~USD89, which seems like a good deal, so I've decided to pull the trigger.

I’m glad you liked it! It’s probably your headphones. There’s definitely a resonant frequency. But it’s not a big deal most of the time. Everyone has their own tastes and that’s what makes the world go round! Cheers!

Speaking of the metal vs plastic threads I was reading a debate over this topic in the context of lens hoods - metal typically is seen as more premium but some people say that if the hood takes a knock and it bends the thread that can wreck the filter thread on your lens- whereas a plastic one will just break and not damage the thread on the actual lens. That said, I think due to size and how they’re used it’s probably never going to happen with the thread you’re talking about in this video so you’re probably safe to favour metal
@TheRecordist
Жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely. I’ve got a lot of lenses for my camera and I have hoods for each of them. I would never buy a metal threaded hood. I totally agree. But with mic shockmounts and clips, plastic will break eventually. And there’s no worry about ruining your mic stand. Haha. But great point!

I was expecting this to be a true condenser and not an electret backed one considering it's "34mm". The $150 price tag would suggest it as well. Do you have a spec sheet that clarifies the electret status?
@TheRecordist
10 ай бұрын
Hmm. That’s a good catch. It may not be electret backed. I must have gotten that info somewhere but when I looked again just now, I couldn’t find anything that suggested it was electret. Perhaps they’ve upgraded it? I’m usually very thorough with my reviews and double and triple check everything. Perhaps this puck got past the goalie haha. The resonant frequency was a problem on this mic. Not that resonant bodies are all bad. There are many resonant bodies that aren’t excited by external vibrations. This one is though. As you’re talking you can hear it. Here is their site: www.maono.com/products/xlr-condenser-microphone-with-34mm-large-diaphragm-maono-au-pm500t Sorry if I was wrong.
@skorpers

@@TheRecordist Yeah it's no problem, I liked your review. The fact the body itself has resonance at an unflattering range is honestly the same problem it'd have if it was an electret such as the one in the AT2020 and similar mics. Been looking for a decent condenser that doesn't have this issue as I'm looking for the best neutral voice over / acting mic. Resonance or a "buzz" as some have referred to it is what you get from many electret capsule and also cheap transformers. So when you have to listen to peoples auditions all day you end up being unable to unhear it whenever a mic has that issue.

@@skorpers yep. I totally get what you’re saying. A very common low cost VO mic is the Røde NT1 (not to be confused with the wretched NT1A that sounds like shart). It’s flat and easy to listen to. Some great VO mics a bit higher priced are the sE Electronics sE4400 or T2. Or even better, the Lauten Audio LS-208. For super wicked cheap mics, the Bai Fei Li C-414 ones are impressive. I think they’ve got a pleasing edge to them. I have the BFL V5 here and I’ve heard great things but I have yet to plug it in to hear it. The UA DLX is very expensive but super versatile. The Lauten Audio Atlantis is probably the best mic I’ve ever tried. But again, very expensive. Hope some of this helped!
@skorpers

@@TheRecordist Might you know where I could find the original NT2? I've heard good things about that from a very critical audio mixer, but it seems most listings are actually the NT2-A.
