I bought one for me, yes its pricy (especially here in switzerland - lol) but i think in regards to sound design this HS wasnt designed for the audiophile hardcore "nerd" but more for people like me that commute a lot (eiter because of their work, or to their work). Where you want "good/ok/normal" sound quality since you are in a mobile envoriment anyway. If i really want to listen to music in good quality, i stay at home and chill out there. But in train up to now i used my in-ear-sennheiser phones (that sound awesome btw, but have no NC). Since commuting by train here can be kinda noisy (lots of people, phonecalls, students talking, kids crying etc. etc.) its also stressfull. To cancle that out, i had to crank up the music. Thats okay when im at home and want to go BAD-Ass while playing, but not when i want to relax. So cranking the volume up so it blocks out the outside noise (eventough the sennheiser block out passively kinda good) the background noise is still there. This is where the QC comes into play where i actually (like you) realized how MUCH constant background noise there is everywhere. There i can prefer a bit lower sound quality but i can crank the volume down while its still quiet. Also a major factor for me: since i wear glasses, many headsets hurt my ears after a while, same goes for the in-ear plugs after like 1.5-2h it gets uncomfortable. These i wore for 6h yesterday during work (big open office). Not only improved my work efficency because i could concentrate better and loose less time on fault correction, but also when i took them off... i actually didnt felt them at all while i was using them. So from my pov i guess it depends on what you want: Superb Sound, or a comfortable noise level. (Comfortable wearing guess can go into both parts ^^ ). On a side note tough: There is a airvent at the top which produces a hissing noise if the air is blowing rectangular over it that even the NC cant cancel out (had that yesterday on the way home, was kinda windy here. so TLDR: From my first hand expirience: Awesome HS if you want a comfortable very excellent NC headset, but if you are the audiophile supernerd that has very high standards in regards to sound quality, but does not need NC, get something else :) And as you sai'd , with NC-ON you can get a very nice easy listening expirience. I guess thats because the HS wasnt ment for "headbangers". So in the end, i can only agree what you say on all topics. But people have to listen trough your whole video and not stop when you say the base is kinda "meh" :-)

You are criticizing their sound based on what? Not enough bass? What music were you listening to in your test? That's the thing Ian, a balanced sound like the one people like me that produce music are after, is not a bassy, rumbling sound, it's balanced, that's the goal, it's about clarity and definition, not about punch and rumbling, Bose isn't trying to give you bass, is trying to give you clarity, an unbiased sound if you will. Of course if you listen to hip hop or edm all day long in a pair of Beats, you would feel the qc25's lack bass, but if I were to listen to everything in a pair of qc25's for a long time and then switch to a pair of beats, I'd think everything is bassy and it overlaps to the mid and high range so much that it makes things undefined. I'll give you another example, do you know what Yamaha NS 10's are? Those were the mixing monitors that were and still are in many studios, the standard to mix on, they are the truth, I bet you'd say they lack bass... Well the thing is, if it sounds good on ns10's it would sound good everywhere else pretty much, it's a conflict of interests, basically you are saying without any issue, that the headphones are not that great and the bass isn't great, but your criteria to do so, is flawed. All with love, I don't mean to offend you.

Mau you are ranting so much I am thinking you have a hidden agenda. Please do not belittle a reviewer becuse you assume they are a base-thumping beats fan. I have several Bose products and they are all boosted at the lower frequencies so I quit buying Bose long ago. Nearly ALL reviews for the QC25 mentions amazement that the expected bass-heavy sound offered by the QC25 was missing from this model. Remember that a difference in opinion is exactly why we need a multitude of reviews to make an informed decision. I think based upon THIS review, and a few others... I will be purchasing the QC25's.

I love bose sound signature so I know where you’re coming from. I owned beats before and the bass was to much for my kind of genre and mind this was a long time ago when the solos came out and they were still with “Monster” but it was really horrible I swore to myself I would never buy beats brand again and I ran into bose products (speakers, headphones, earbuds) and they are the perfect sound in my opinion. I even went as far as getting the grado headphones but ended up going back to bose. That’s how obsessed I am with the brand although not stylish like beats but quality is my priority and little to no sound leakage which bose is really good at. Also I’m more into the mids standing out a little than the bass or treble unlike beats who’s bass is their priority. And the grados they sound just ass good but they leak too much.

Just so you know I've owned a pair of ATH M50X ever since they came out until now and I enjoy my beats just as much. However, M50X are a better buy obviously for your money but it doesn't mean beats suck! I also know a lot about audio companies e.g. Beyerdynamic, Seinnheiser, Grado, Sony etc...

I've had the QC25 since early November when my wife got me a set for my Birthday. I agree with everything you said. I would add that I do a lot of international travel for work and these headsets have been a godsend when flying. A whining or crying child is almost silenced with this headset. Also the low frequency ambient noise is gone. Great job on your video.

Got this on last Saturday but returned it back today... The noise cancellation is really good! But the sound is just good but not great. As in comfort, it is more comfortable than QC15 and should be quite comfort for average people. BUT, if you have a bigger head size like me, it might not be really comfort... Probably is just me as I always find it hard to find a good headphone that will allow me to wear for hours and still feel comfortable. Maybe only a in-ear headphone will suit me :(

Even with current day standards you review is still pretty good, and objective too. I picked up a well looked after pair this year for a really good price, you are right about how cheap the listening experience becomes once that ANC button is off though. When it's on, however, there's a crisper definition in the vocals and mids as you aptly put it, so you can tell you are not using cheap headphones but they are not quite audiophile grade. I'm normally more concerned with the audio fidelity of headsets more than their noise cancelling ability but I have to say, the proper implementation of noise cancelling on these cans made me notice. I have other noise cancelling sets but Bose did a really great job at ANC on these, and the acoustic seal too to be honest. For what i got them for, they make excellent daily work desk companions.

I have a pair of QC25's, I love em. I agree that the sub bass is lacking, but I wear these at work to help me focus and concentrate and drown out distractions. I think in that scenario the sound and noise cancelling from these headphones is amazing. Very mellow and relaxing yet still upbeat with most music. I thought long and hard about buying these headphones given the price, but once i made the decision to buy, i never questioned that decision. If you are looking for great NC, sound that makes you want to hear every note and can afford them, they are well worth the price. Good medicine for the ears.

I own a pair of the QC20i in-ears. I loved them so much that I wanted a pair like them to use at my computer. I bought the QC25s and I was very disappointed. I gave them a quick road test out and about, and walking down a relatively noisy street with trucks driving past, I literally couldn't hear my music. I also tried using them in a classroom, and I could still clearly hear everybody talking around me enough for it to be bothersome. Yes the QC25s and QC15s reduce environmental noise. Anything like swishing, hissing, whooshing are greatly reduced to an excellent standard, but compared to the QC20is, that's just not enough for me. I also found the sound quality to be quite mediocre, about on par with budget Sennheiser HD 202s for 30 dollars. (I'm not an audiophile, they probably have different specifications, but in terms of pure impression of quality, that's what I'd compare them to.) Again, I find the QC20is to have a richer, clearer sound. I don't know about the sound quality, but the noise cancellation is, I think, much better in the in-ear QC20is simply because they are going in the ear. The passive cancellation is far better because a very comprehensive seal is formed in your ear canal, to the point where there is some initial discomfort from the pressure, but you get used to this without any negative side effects. With the QC15s and QC25s, they are so lightweight that the passive cancellation, the seal around your ear really did not meet my expectations. They are extremely comfortable, but that's the trade-off. Comfort VS clamping force. Difficult to have both. Overall, I was so disappointed with the QC25s, I sent them back, and tried the QC15s instead, because I remembered trying them in an Apple Store and feeling greater passive cancellation. I sent the QC15s back too, because the sound quality really was horrid. Like listening to music through a plastic beaker - raspy, cheap and completely lacking in richness. Worse than the QC25s (which is a good thing) and Sennheiser's cheapest model, the HD 201s, in my opinion. If you want the real feeling of mind blowing noise cancellation and sound quality that at least sounds like you're getting what you paid for, and you're willing to go for in-ears instead of overs, get the QC20s or QC20is if you use Apple devices. Bose need to work on their passive noise cancellation and sound quality, because these have swung too far on the scale towards comfort, and away from quiet. I love my QC20is. They're an absolute dream. But for over ears, I expect more.

I must say, I totally disagree with the base sounding necessarily better on the Beats and M50s. It's true the base is certainly tighter on the M50s (Studio 2013?.. maybe....). I have just tested a pair today for around 15 minutes and I must say I was actually blown away by the atmosphere the base creates. I think it's great. In my opinion it certainly provides an overall higher impact and more eventful listening experience than the m50s (just to point out I adore my m50s). M50s provide more of an accurate thud base than a rolling base as the QC25s do (type of like the thing you will hear when listening to the Beats Pros but with overall clarity). I agree though the highs are certainly muted at certain frequencies (the base can over power some higher frequencies until your ears adjust.. nothing too serious but when they do I was fine with it) and the lows are certainly less tight, but at the same time are tight, but they just have an extra soft roll to them. Never turned off the ANC though, probably best I didn't. I actually think they are a great pair of Hi-Fi type headphones which create an impactfull and joyful listening experience. Even more so.. depending on the music you listen to of course.. than the M50s. Imo, QC25 shine with more punchy pop/dance music as this is where the base can really get stuck in and deliver that soft but impact rumble. More high frequency music such as classical, musicals etc I think perform fine, but nothing to blow you away. On the other hand, m50s can perform nicely rounded in all genres. P.s. Reg price, agreed way to high for what it is.

I totally agree with you. I think this review for qc25 sound quality is somewhat mean towards bose. First, I think the sound quality of QC25 is very good. I think it is not that good at the first fifty hours, and it sound bad true. But when you have it after fifty hours you will feel a totally different headphone on your head. I think bose's tune preference is different from other HiFi brand. It is more like a portable home sound system on your head. I think the most excellent part of it is the mid part of it. It sound very moving when I listen to some male musicians. String instruments and piano is also very good. For the base parts I think it is also very good. The drum is no deep enough is true especially for the rock music. But it still feed balanced and good for listen. I think it is the only part I am not quite satisfied with. I think when you turn of the ANC, it is not as good as you turn it on. But it doesn't worth a garbage. All the frequencies are muted off somewhat. The sound filed is broader. If you do not want to focus the music a lot, it offers you a good choice since the QC25 is quite comfort. I do have a pair of Amperior and SE535. I also have a P5 before. I think QC25 is different from all of them and I'd like to keep it for a very long time! It's not worth $300 but it at least worth $200.

You get more bass with the Beats simply because the pinch pushes the ear cups so tight to your head that its like pushing the ear cups to your head with your hands that after a while they become uncomfy.. Bose uses a special patent called Tri-port, which does pretty much the same job as the Beats without pushing the ear cups to your head so tight with the pretty much same if not better results. Beats bass is so uncomfy that if you listen to -regular- music like Adele they just ruin the song.

I just got these yesterday, and wow they feel great! It does feel roomy, and by that I mean my ears have plenty of space. I felt that the NC on the QC20 were better. I do wear glasses, but I also tried the NC without them and I do think the QC20 are better at that. I defintely prefer the headphones over the earbuds because its 1 wire, so they don't rub and screech in my ear. Feels louder and finally can feel some bass (tho not as much as I'd like -- I like the impact you find on beats). I like these a lot! I bought them from Target at 30% repackaged, or you can get them on eBay new for about 10% off easy.

I have the headphones for 2 weeks now and I think it is the best headphone I ever had. But on one point I disagree with this review. because I don't think it sounds like garbage without the noice canceling switched on. It is just a matter of tast. To my opinion this headphone has a much thinner sound (if you understand what I mean) when the NC is turned on. When it is turned off it is a less clear, but still it joyful to listen music.

I plugged it into my phone to see how my own music would fare on these headphones and all you've said are very true; about how the sound becomes mellow or softer rather than tighter, with not too much emphasis on the bass. Though I was slightly disappointed with this aspect, I did enjoy the "experience" of the noise cancelling, and isn't one to be missed out on! Very interesting review, well thought out. I would have liked a comparison to the previous model, because I believe you probably would have found drastic improvements. Bose sound is actually designed to be overall in nature, so it isn't meant to focus on bass as much as Beats. The issue in Beats lie in their consumeristic appeal, and focus on low-tones, but complete disregard to other types of music which differentiate from rap/ electro stuff. Bose sound products sound phenomenal for general sound, and for noise cancelling are uncomparable.

The looseness in the bass is because of the lack of seal. As soon as the seal even ever so slightly breaks, the QC25's bass goes from being very tight and defined, to sloppy and distorted. Try using them again without your glasses and making sure there is a complete seal around the ear.
@lachlanlikesathing
9 жыл бұрын
TheGamingAudiophile A bad seal is certainly no help, but since changing my glasses or even not wearing them, I'm still not impressed by the bass on the QC25. It's sloppy and gummy compared to the other closed headphones I have around that price range (with the exception of the Sony MDR-1A, which also has pretty bleh lows). From the measurements of the QC25 www.innerfidelity.com/images/BoseQuietComfort25.pdf it's apparent that there is some weird ringing going on in the lows www.innerfidelity.com/images/BoseQuietComfort25.pdf vs www.innerfidelity.com/images/AudioTechnicaATHM50x.pdf or www.innerfidelity.com/images/AudioTechnicaATHMSR7.pdf The square wave response on the QC25 is really, really messy. The driver can't seem to reproduce low notes notes without oscillating severely. It's probably underdamped.
@TheGamingAudiophile
9 жыл бұрын
***** Actually those measurements points to a tight and controlled bass response. Notice the very low THD levels in the bass region coupled with a relatively good 30Hz sqaure wave response. The 300Hz ringing affects the higher frequency performance of the sound. Essentially it reduces their ability to resolve finer details and decreases their finesse. That's the ONLY fault I can find in these headphones. They simply don't resolve as good as the best in this category such as the B&W P7, Nad Viso HP50 or ATH-MSR7. However, since the QC25 renders all external noise virtually unperceptive once music is at moderate volume, it sounds more detailed than any other portable I have come across when in noisy environments. This was quoted from Tyll's written review of the QC25 when he was analyzing the measurements "Between the slight rise in the bass, good 30Hz square wave shape, and relatively low distortion in the bass, you'd think these cans do a lovely job delivering punch down low...and they do indeed."...
@lachlanlikesathing
9 жыл бұрын
TheGamingAudiophile Well, it's in the eye of the observer - but I don't really think the square wave looks that great. The 30Hz square wave doesn't sag but there's some severe bunched up ringing right at the beginning. The 300hz square wave looks absolutely awful and it would be noticeable in the mid-bass. Basically every bass transient would end up being smeared as a result of this oscillation, unlike with the MSR7 or M50x. No idea what could be happening between 30-300Hz but neither extreme looks that great. As for the THD result, I'm not absolutely sure about this, but I think Tyll's THD graph is measured off an instantaneous swept tone. It doesn't show THD or ringing after the initial impulse like a CSD waterfall graph would. www.innerfidelity.com/content/headphone-measurements-explained-total-harmonic-distortion-plus-noise-part-1 It certainly does sound detailed because of the ANC though. I still think of this headphone as my second favourite portable just because of the ANC.

If you've gotten the chance to try out the QC20's, which do you think is better as far as sound quality and noise cancelation? ***** I did end up buying them. I had Beats Studio and they sound really good, but they were uncomfortable and hot. The constant noise canceling hiss was annoying when listening to classical music. Finally, the left ear rattled during heavy bass hits. The build quality and comfort of the QC25 are great. The noise canceling is the best I have used over the years. The sound is good, but I would have liked a bit more bass, as you pointed out. Changing the EQ settings on my Mac fixes the problem easily. On my iPhone however, I find that the max volume is not as loud as it should be and the bass is still not strong enough, even with the equalizer turned on. That said, the all around sound is pretty authentic and the noise cancellation does mitigate the lack of volume. Thanks for asking. Great channel, by the way!

Peter Leaffan I agree that Tyll's 30Hz square wave graph for the QC25 graph looks good, but the 300Hz graph looks appalling. Really severe ringing. No idea what is happening between those two frequencies but my impression is that it sounds sloppy. You're more than welcome to disagree, I still like the QC25 very much.
@RushFan84
9 жыл бұрын
But my point was exclusively with regards to the bass. The 30Hz square wave plot is quite good and the bass on the QC25s is pretty darn good. The M50X have an issue in the treble (metallic stridency) that I could never get over.
@lachlanlikesathing
9 жыл бұрын
Peter Leaffan 20-300Hz is still around the bass /mid-bass region. www.independentrecording.net/irn/resources/freqchart/images/main_chart.jpg As I said we have no idea what happens between 50Hz and 300Hz. on the QC25. It could look terrible around 100Hz. I should also point out that even at 50Hz the square wave graph has severe ringing compressed into the leading edge, compared to the M50x which sags but is otherwise clean. Believe me, I use the QC25 more than I use the M50x. You're welcome to like the QC25 more than the M50x too.
@RushFan84

I think you're confusing the terms a bit to create a strawman here. Sorry man, but again, the bass on the QC25s is actually quite good. And both 30Hz and 50Hz square wave plots show this. The 300Hz plot isn't intended for bass but rather a measurement of mids. I've talked to Tyll about this on a few occasions about this too. I'm not saying the QC25s are the be all and end all....but for travel the NC is amazing and the sound is also quite good. The M50x's treble is what did them in for me...too zingy.

How about ATH-ANC9 compared to QC15 or QC25 or ATH-M50X in term of sound quality? I own QC3, I love how comfortable it is and how it cancels engine noise on plane but after I purchased ATH-M50X, I could never get M50X off my ears, again in term of sound quality, M50X sounds way way better than QC3... right now i am considering to replace QC3 with ANC9, since i travel quite often, but i just don't know how ANC9 sounds compared to M50X. The reason why i am asking because these convenience stores in my area do NOT know how good Audio Technica is and they just don't have those ATH for customer to give a try. Thank..

Mehmet Cavas I got the quietcomfort, I've read reviews online from audiophiles that the M50x is very overhyped which was a surprise and that they are uncomfortable for long use which was a dealbreaker for me because I study for hours. The quietcomfort doesn't have great sound quality but it does the trick, but I have to tell you that the noise cancelling is amazing! I share an apartment with others and it really bothers me hearing them talking, cooking and walking around while I try to study and the quietcomfort solved the problem. Also they are very comfortable and light, and sometimes I even forget that they are on me. Basically it gives you zero fatigue. So in conclusion if you are viewing headphones as a tool that will help you with your studies, then yeah I would recommend the quietcomfort. But before investing your money into it I would advise that you try them on first to see if sound quality is a dealbreaker to you. Good luck!

Interesting that you mentioned the construction. I listened to this video previously using my V-Moda M100s, then again with my new QC25s. Couldn't hear the construction on the M100s, but picked it up on the QC25s, which was quite a surprise considering that the M100s are considerably more powerful, albeit apparently with more recessed mids than these QC25s. On another note, Lachlan, do you think, or have experienced, that the QC25s benefit significantly enough from a DAP to recommend one? If so, which one would you recommend?

Great review! :) I just got these, and though I'm generally happy with them, the low volume annoys me. I have the Audio Technica M50s and some cheap JVCs, and both of them play significantly louder, both on my laptop and phone. On my Macbook Pro I can easily listen with the volume at 100%... are they supposed to be like that? It's not a very big deal, but annoying to have to change the volume all the time when changing headsets.

Hey there, great review. I do have a question in terms of what you think would be decent substitutes for the QC25. You're right, they are expensive and the sound quality may not be as good as the Audio Technica ATH-M50, which I have in black like you, but I've been looking at different kinds of noise-cancelling headphones and I'm not sure what other choices would be just as good, better, and/or cheaper. Any suggestions? I'm a bit of an audiophile, which is why the Bose price is putting me off a little for the pricing. Makes it seems like Bose is more interested in the customer paying for the technology of the sound cancelling versus the level of sound quality.

Multi balanced armature earphones tend to be more sensitive to different DAPs because they generally have impedances that vary strongly with frequency. This means they end up interacting with the output impedance of different DAPs. Dynamic driver headphones and earphones aren't nearly as sensitive. That said I have no idea what the internal amplification on the Bose QC25 would do in terms of interacting with the DAP. You might find this informative: nwavguy.blogspot.com.au/2011/02/headphone-amp-impedance.html

Just got a pair, and you're bang on about the bass (everything, in fact). I thought to myself, wow, is this how the base sounds like in a pair of headphones that retail for around £270? Having said that though, I literally had the best long-haul flight entertainment and slumber experience, because the QC25 just gave me a tranquillity otherwise not possible. So overall, recommend if the purpose/intention of the user is to get something that annihilates distracting sounds beyond your and your pair of cans.

I bought a pair of studios yesterday and I opened them like an excited child. I found them extremely disappointing. The ANC is a joke. IMO did nothing to block out any noise. The hiss was loud enough to be distracting and I think that's it's point. You hear the hiss instead of the outside noise... Anyway, even though I got them for $150 (price matched Amazon) I felt that I should be impressed for that price. So only a few hours after purchase, I took them back and talked myself into the qc25. I think that it emphasizes bass better than the beats tbh. The song sounds fuller and when there is bass in a song, the treble doesn't get muddied out in the process. Audio is something that's very subjective to anyone and in my honest opinion, I don't think the beats are even in the same class as the Bose. With them both having the same MSRP, I'd pick Bose again any day.
