Many thanks for giving us this patch. I've been trying to get the BD2 sound, and you've got it!

This clip and your site posts about canceling Mic were game changers for me! THANK YOU!!! I very quickly managed to use the canceling IR with the PowerCab. But the huge missing piece for me although used Pod HD500 and HX STOMP for the last decade or so, still couldn't recreate my signature sound of the DigiTech RP1. Then I I saw this clip, but abandoned for half a year as TrueRTA free has no sweep and Level 4 costs 100$. Then came back and had a breakthrough with a mix of TrueRTA Scope utilizing the HX OSC block as a signal generator, REW, and Friture - lo and behold - I was able to recreate my RP1 sound! Amazing. Ran to use it on rehearsal last night - Hugh success!

I just set this up in my Helix and sounds great. I used lower gain on the Valve Driver though at 2.5 and lowered the overall EQ gain to suit my board. I also set both blocks up in a parallel split and assigned a footswitch to the split A/B junction and set it to route to B when engaged so that the EQ block isn’t on the same path as my other overdrive pedals in the chain when the “blues driver” is off. 🤘🏻

That was a fascinating video, and very informative. Thanks for sharing your method for determining the pedal/effect EQ curves and how to match them. 👍

MR Harbauer you’re by far the most interesting user of the Helix on the net.. and i mean what I say..you’re the only person who make real tests in a scientific manner and this I like too much.. thanks for all your time and brain to share with us all that knowledge... hope you go further and deeper exploring all the possibilities and features of that great device..in this part you answer a question I had early this morning about how to use a parametric EQ of the helix when I got different drives from amps and distortion blended together which have not the same pics in the same area tweaked directly in the helix without using a computer, I imagined that in the future firmware they add a real-time dynamic screen of the EQ to see what we’re cutting adding etc. I’ll use the helix through a FAb Eq 2 when I forge a sound which will help considerably. I’m a sound engineer and I enjoy each of your videos .. this is the first time I see something like this about a guitar gear. Just awesome.. thanks again .

I use to do a very similar process back when modelling amps first came out. I did extensive testing with real amps RTA, signal generators and frequency sweeps to nail down the amps characteristics. Then with filters and EQ narrow it down as close as I could get it.

Great video! I’d like to do this for an amp. I looked through the videos on your channel but see anything other than the final tone match for a Fuchs...which was great....but didn’t show how you did it. With an amp there are variables...the amp, speaker, and mic. So I’m definitely interested in your process.

Thanks. Been having trouble duplicating my BD-2 mode from my OD-200 on the HX Stomp XL. I know you said you were using the BD-2w. Were you duplicating the Standard mode or Custom mode on the BD-2w?

interesting. just a bit of constructive criticism re: audio quality. I thought something was wrong with my speakers as I was having some difficulty understanding what you were saying. Thought I might need to clean my ears out or something. So I turned on captions in youtube and apparently the youtube CC feature and I suffer from the same problem. That aside, I use to do this type of thing with previous Line 6 modelers (I just recently acquire the Helix) I would get some of my favorite stompboxes (some of them vintage specimens) and A/B them with the modeler until I would get an acceptable match. I found the Tubedriver and the Line 6 Overdrive to be the two that I ended up using most often to mimic the real deal. In my case, the BD-2, OD-3, and DS-1. The Line 6 Overdrive is very versatile and has a unique midrange control that has a huge effect on the character of the overdrive/distortion. One thing I would like to point out is that I would put my analog stompboxes in a true bypass loop in front of the modeler instead of in the modeler loop for a/b comparisons. Reason being is that I found the A/D converters in the Line 6 modeler to have too much of an effect on the tonality of the pedals when put in the Line 6 FX loop no matter how I set the send/return levels. Anyway, good work. Thanks!

dedication always preveils.. I don't have a Helix yet..but, am wondering if you've run some of the amp sims thru that RTA yet ,to check what frequencys and bandwidths some of the amp models are using in their eq section... Would be nice to know if we could adjust some things like that , without having to find an amp sim that has a eq section that matches what we're looking for... Also , I wonder if anyone out there has made a hack program, or adapted one, to actually create indepth simulations like helix does , and then puts out in the updates... I'm sure they do a great job researching amp builds when creating sims...but I'd still like full controll of the unit for my own personal amp sim build/s......great job getting that close to tone... I do see in the future, line6 adding a basic auto cloning type program to the helix, with some custom adjustable parameters built in the program. either that or they'll release a new , Helix 2 , with that built in...but I don't see a Helix really getting any better ... I mean it's already a completely amazing unit...

I have run many of the amp sims thru helix, Both with and without Cabs. I have compared their mesa boogie models to several Boogie's that I own and i can say they do a really excellent job. I am currently going thru all the blocks in helix and documenting them on my blog. The link is listed in the video description. I just got started a few weeks ago but there's already some good info there, and more coming almost every day. As far as hacking the firmware... good luck . its all written in assembly, and then compiled.

I’m a little confused, are you going out from the helix into an interface and then back into the return of the helix from the same interface?

Incredible work, do you have a King of Tone that you have lying around to do the same thing with? Or, alternatively, do you have any tips on a starting point to copy a KoT in the Helix?

Thanks man! I don’t currently own a KOT. Nor am I on the waiting list. 😂. I’m not exactly. Sure where to start with that one. I’d have to do some Research.

no problem, I will try to imitate your process and see if I can tone match my KoT. I've heard that the JTM45 preamp works well as a substitute for one it just seemed a little too clean to my ears. Thanks again!

Really interesting stuff... Would you take the challenge to do this with the gain channel of a real amp... aka Tone Matching???
@ericharbauer
6 жыл бұрын
Yes challenge accepted, actually its already in the works. I'm honestly not exactly sure if its possible at this point it time given the blocks available to me in helix. Waveform shapes being the big issue. If I had a way to re shape the waveforms I could do a lot more stuff. The Helix developers have a tube simulator they use. They can adjust the settings on it and get the different waveforms they need. I'm forced to dig thru helix blocks and evaluate what i'm given and see if I can find a close enough match to get what I need. I may be able to make some things work reasonably well but I honestly dont know at this point, It mat all just be a huge colossal fail. We shall see. I'll keep you posted.
