Yakyu Inari Shrine is said to have been founded in the 5th year of the Wadou era (712), and the large scale, the grandeur of the shrine building, and the miraculous powers it bestows have attracted many believers.
According to the shrine records, in the middle of the Heian period, Taira Tadatsune, the lord of a castle in Shimousa Province (Chiba Prefecture and part of Ibaraki Prefecture), started a rebellion and quickly conquered neighboring countries, eventually spreading his power throughout the Kanto region and invading Kawagoe in Musashi Province (Saitama Prefecture and parts of Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefecture) with a large army.
The Imperial Court tasked the renowned military commander Minamoto no Yorinobu with hunting down Tadatsune, setting up his headquarters at Nokugahara, and when Yorinobu prayed for victory at Noku Inari Shrine all night, a white cloud in the shape of an arrow suddenly appeared in the dawning sky, and the arrow flew off as if to hit the enemy.
Believing this to be the god's protection, Yorinobu was inspired and led the charge into the enemy camp himself. Caught by surprise, Tadatsune's forces panicked and retreated for a time, but quickly rallied, and after three days and three nights of fierce fighting, Yorinobu's forces, fighting with faith in the gods, emerged victorious.
Upon returning to camp, Yorinobu immediately reported his victory to Noku Inari, and, as he attributed the victory to the divine power and virtue, donated a rebuilt shrine and ordered the villagers to rename Noku Inari to Yakyu Inari.
Since then, Yakyu Inari Shrine has attracted the faith of many people, including the lords of Matsuyama Castle and Kawagoe Castle, and as times of peace arrived, it flourished even more than before, and it is said that during the Edo period in particular, a market was formed in front of the shrine with worshippers from far and near, including Edo (Tokyo).
Today, there are over 100 small and large lecture groups here, and the shrine is dedicated to the guardian deity of bountiful harvests, prosperous business, and household safety, as well as to prayers for road safety, protection from misfortune and fire, better luck, academic success, and improvement in the arts.
From mid-April, peonies, also known as Kao, compete with wisteria and azaleas in bloom in the peony garden on the temple grounds, providing a feast for the eyes.
