A famous temple of the Tendai sect called Gyoki Soken, located to the west of Komoro Station. The statue of Nunobiki Kannon, which is said to have transformed into a cow and took a greedy old woman to Nagano Zenkoji Temple (Tendai sect), is enshrined in the Kannon-do Hall (an important cultural property) located on a cliff.
``Visiting Zenkoji Temple after being run over by a cow'' is a legend of a phantom bull found in a lucky charm handed down at Nunobikiyama Shaksonji Temple.Once upon a time, an old woman who had no faith caught a cow (Kannon) running away with a cloth she had been drying caught in its horns. It is said that he chased after him and found himself at Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, realizing that he had been guided by Kannon, and repented of his greedy and spiteful heart. From this anecdote, it has become a proverb that means, ``You can be guided in a good direction by unexpected events or by the support of those around you.''
The official name is Tendai Sect Nunobikiyama Shakonji Temple. It is the 29th temple of the Shinano Thirty-Three Kannon Sacred Sites. It is said to have been founded by Gyoki in the first year of Kamiki (724). It is a temple that has a deep connection with Mochizuki no Maki, and it is presumed that there was a long-standing connection with the Shigeno clan (Mochizuki clan).
Numerous temples were carved out of the rock and enshrined there, and during the Edo period, they were introduced in pictures as ``Kannon on the Cliff,'' and the area was crowded with people passing by on the highway.
On the Nunobiki Kannon cliff, there is a 16m long "Nunoiwa" rock, which is exposed from the sediments of Komoro Lake that existed from 2 million years ago to several hundred thousand years ago. This fuwa rock may have been the origin of the Buddhist story of ``Going to Zenkoji Temple after being run over by a cow.'' The village under this rock is called Nunoshita Village.
