One of the funnest times I had was learning Botch riffs on my practice amp and two or three pedals on an aircraft carrier in the middle of a war. I can still whip those licks out and destroy anyone. Thanks, Botch!

5:40 probably the greatest hook ever composed. Dave Knudson was above the average chugging hardcore guitarist in terms of originality and feeling. Eventhough he developped his sound out of HxC territory with Minus the Bear, his work in Botch is definitely up there, and can (still to this day) keep up with guys like Kurt Ballou and Ben Weinman in terms of intensity.

If you haven’t heard American Nervoso or We Are The Romans, he did stuff with Botch that was so cool, sleek, and inventive, definitely worth checking out. I use that music to run to, it’s not technicality for technicalities sake, it was about great song writing. Still stands up today, tho for some reason no one seems to be aware of these guys.

when heavy music was out for blood love this era of mathcore/chaotic hardcore, and botch were my top of the tree, not as technical as DEP , but the energy was undeniable
@wrarmatei

Nostalgia's out for blood, nowadays. For real though, it seems like technical instrumentation is being conflated with aggression/heaviness, which seems like the kind of thing that kids say on the internet, instead of a simple "I enjoy this a lot" because everything has to be hyperbolic on the internet. Nobody can just like or dislike something--no--it has to be a grandstand.
@RustinChole

Not as technical, but composition wise, I prefer Botch. I listen to American Nervoso (1998) and We Are The Romans (2000) way more frequently than Calculating Infinity. If memory serves, Botch actually pre-dated DEP. I’ll be the first to admit that DEP on that Calculating Infinity tour was one of the craziest live experiences ever, but if I could go back and see one or the other, it would be Botch. Deaf Club is pretty sweet, more like the Locust meets Calculating Infinity, but that recent cover they released (Broken Face) is 🤯

Dave is controlling an AB box that controls which guitar cabs (left or right or both) are engaged. Switching from just left to left and right doubles the volume obviously, and makes for an explosive dynamic. He also used a line 6 delay pedal for stuff like the second song in this video. God I miss this fucking band so much.
