Amo a nobre arte.

So many great storylines here. After first Bowe/Holyfield, Evander realized he needed to put on weight (muscle for a cruiserweight). He looked VERY jacked in the 2nd fight, and heart conditions often result from steroid use. Holyfield's stamina plummeted for several fights, then it reappeared, possibly after having his condition treated. Big George Foreman's instincts were correct. Holyfield was fighting on "dangerous courage here". Then when Lampley probes him about his silence you can tell he's not happy, genuinely concerned about another fighter's welfare.

Even though Holyfield lost the fight it was almost a blessing in disguise because it convinced promoter Don King to set the fight with Mike Tyson because he felt that Evander was a shot fighter. It didn't turn out that way because he outboxed Tyson and made it a boxing match while Bowe was regressing badly after the Trilogy, he didn't stay in shape after the winning the Heavyweight title in the 1st fight and he got hit way too much which set up the brawls with Andrew Golota. Andrew Golota was a talented fighter but way too much of a street fighter and if it wasn't for the low blows in the 2 fights he would have easily beaten Bowe. The reason why Holyfield was slow and off track because he was diagnosed with Hepatitis C which really affected his stamina in the 3rd fight. If he never had Hepatitis C then Holyfield would have won by knockout or decision most likely KO.
@meharinationsportspodcast2582
10 жыл бұрын
It's boxing politics and I researched this angle. Don King wanted no part of Holyfield for a long time and got his break when Tyson bail out in 92 from the rib cage injury and then the rape conviction. All boxers and promoters duck certain fighter all the time. Don King and Tyson was no exception because during 1995 and 1996 the perception of Evander was he was a shot fighter from the trilogy but in reality Riddick was the shot fighter by not staying in shape and took a lot of clean shots to his head which affected him mentally. But, King didn't look at it that way and he thought this was the best time to place Tyson with Holyfield which was a mistake on his part. Don King did the same thing with Lennox Lewis because he knew how talented he was and he did every tactic possible to avoid until Tyson left King in 2000 and went for Lewis in 2002. The main problem is promoters try to control a sport to the point where they can dictate when the fan can see fights that we want to see. This is why UFC is killing boxing and also why the Mayweather and Pacquiao has not happened.
@meharinationsportspodcast2582
10 жыл бұрын
They actually were supposed to fight in 1992 but then came the rape conviction which delayed the fight until 1996. Before, Holyfield was an unknown heavyweight and after he knocked out Douglas a lot of critics didn't see him as the true undisputed heavyweight champion. It was after he lost to Bowe in the 1st fight that fans began to show more respect for him and became the "Real Deal".

Bowe through out his career always got hit alot by his opponents. Good thing for him he had a rock solid chin and blessed with a strong physic. He took a pounding from Pierre Coutzer, was out boxed by Tony Tubbs. But he was a really great fight in his prime and a lot of fun to watch. One of the best in fighters I've ever seen. And you're right about his abilities regressing after the trilogy. I saw both Golota fights in person, and right before the start of the second fight I was chatting with the guy sitting behind me and was giving him my take on what was going to happen. I told him that my prediction was that there was a real possibility Bowe was going to be hurt badly this night, and possibly would be the very last fight we would see him in. After what I witnessed the first fight, that was the only conclusion I could come to. It was a very sad thing to watch being a fan of Bowe through his whole career being he was from Brooklyn and all. And the funny thing is, my prediction for the first fight was as wrong as wrong can be, and correct as correct can be for the second.

It's totally obvious that something was very wrong with Holyfield. No energy at all. That's why Foreman was commenting (or not commenting) in the manner he was. It must have been very worrisome watching it live at the time. If Holyfield had any energy, he could have finished Bowe. Bowe wasn't just down, he looked almost out. As bad as Holyfield looked, it was Bowe who didn't recover from this fight. His next fight was with Golota and he had nothing

I am shocked the referee never warned holyfield for holding and headbutting throughout the fight.

holyfield had hepatis in this fight,that causes your energy to spike and dip, you could see it happening, he would fight hard then look dead on his feet without doing anything,

a truly incredible boxer, he went beyond what Floyd Patterson tried to do moving up from Cruiserweight and taking on the best. You can't help love the guy

Plus there is the mysterious heart issue that was never really clear. It was so clear he wasn't the same guy in this fight or even the Moorer fight that he was in the past. I can remember in the Moorer fight, Teddy Atlas was encouraging Mike saying "There is something wrong with this man."

Bowe could have been one of the all-time greats. He just should have had more big fights. And watched his weight more carefully. I would bet my money on him agains Lewis.
