Oh Amber.......I bought an old family album from the early 1900's with labeled pictures in it for about $40 off of E-Bay and with a little research I found extended family members and sold it back to them for $200, the price they offered....it was gratifying to reunite the family with their treasure..

The war ration book was exactly that…milk, bread, gas, all kinds of things were rationed during the war…they are of historical significance….
@cylversprings

During the war food was rationed due to most of the staples going to the fighting men. Each family was given ration books of stamps. You were only allowed to purchase that amount of that product for that time. I don't know how often the ration books were handed out. You were also urged to plant victory gardens. That is where you planted gardens that grew two or three things and you shared with your neighbors that did the same thing. You could plant peas, corn and potatoes while they planted tomatoes, cucumbers, and carrots and you shared so you each had some.

Another way to look at the ration stamp program is if it had gone into affect again during the pandemic there would not have been a shortage of toilet paper and cleaning products as you could only purchase with the stamps. Once your stamps were gone you couldn't purchase any more of the products. The war stamps I have were my grandparents and each booklet was good for a year. Booklets were issued for sugar, coffee, silk stockings,gasoline and several other items.

From my grand[parents old home town in southern Ohio, they had separate ration books for ICE, since refrigerators hadnt been invented yet, in order for a famkily to be able to get a large block of ice for their ice box to keep their food cold, they had to present a ration card so they could get a block of ice to keep those working . A large 50 pound block of ice would last maybe a couple of days.

It's really useful to be old enough to remember when all this stuff was sold in stores, and adults bought them and used them. The Polaroid camera looks like it's from the 60s. Slide projectors were used by annoying relatives in the 50s, when little kids were made to view every slide grandpa took on his vacation. In the late 70s, they sold Atari and Commodore games on floppy discs in baggies - there were whole stores full of them. It was the gold rush for amateur programmers, you just coded up your game, made copies on floppies, and shipped them off hoping someone would buy them for $7.95.

To monitor rationing everybody was given their own ration book, this contained tokens that shopkeepers would sign or remove when people bought their items. There were three different colors of ration books: light brown, green and blue. Most adults had pale brown books with the exception of pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and also children under five years old who used green books. This was because they were allowed a daily pint of milk, double the amount of eggs, and first choice of fruit. Children between five and sixteen used blue ration books, fruit was not limited for children and they were to have half a pint of milk a day. Inside each ration book were tokens that allowed you to buy rationed items. You would hand the token to the shopkeeper or the shopkeeper would sign the token to show you have used it. Once a person’s ration stamps were used up for a month, she couldn’t buy any more of that type of food.

That Sony digital camera was one of the earliest digital cameras. The one we had when I worked at the Newspaper in 1993 or so took 7 pictures that were like 3x5s in pretty low resolution. I think the memory was around 1mb. We could hook it to our computers by a cable and download the pictures for use in the newspaper. We usually used it for mug shots. Things have changed a lot in 30 years!

Food was in short supply during WWII for many reasons: much of the processed and canned foods was reserved for shipping overseas to our military and our Allies; transportation of fresh foods was limited due to gasoline and tire rationing and the priority of transporting soldiers and war supplies instead of food; imported foods, like coffee and sugar, was limited due to restrictions on importing.
