Amber, you need to better understand what you have with the collectable stamps. Briefly, stamps do not have the collector value they once had, however, with the huge trove you have there is a lot of value there if you educate yourself on what you have and how to handle them. Which is to say, carefully and as little as possible. I see three main components to the collection. First, the cancelled stamps that are cut or torn from the corner of the envelopes. Gather them all together and set them aside. You may have some gems but for the most part they will have very low value. Next you have first day covers. Look it up and learn what they are and the process involved in getting them. The envelopes that have embossed designs that decorate the envelopes and highlight the particular stamp are first day covers. YOU SHOULD NOT be pulling them open to look in the envelopes. That degrades the envelopes. First day covers have significant value. Next you have uncancelled stamps (unused), single stamps and plate blocks. The plate blocks are going to be the most valuable component of the collection. A plate block is a corner set (usually four-sometimes more) taken from the corner of the sheet with the border which has identification serial numbers. The presences of the border is critical to the value. The singles will also have some premium value. AGAIN, do NOT remove the stamps-especially the plate blocks-from the display sleeves they are in. I highly recommend that you have all the uncancelled stamps and the first day covers professionally appraised. The fee for such a large collection will be significant but well worth it for determining the value of what you have and in selling them for their value. Some dealers will be interested in making an offer for the entire collection. Do a search for a highly rated local dealer who has been in business for a long time. Good luck.

@@TheJebusFamily Take the Stamps to a collector for evaluation…it will take forever to learn ALL you need to now about stamps…I suspect that the collection is old and some could be valuable! My guess is the grandfather was a collector and I’ll bet he even was an appraiser for the coins and the stamps…maybe even the jewelry. I also believe he was a professional jeweler, because some of the tools are what they called bench tools, which were used by people who spent years in the jewelry business! Finally, the two lenses in the little case are lens covers, the protect from dust and possible scratches….
