Competition is always a good thing! I've got a dream to build a bike that has as many American-made components as I can get my hands on, so I had a silly hope that this would be made in the USA. That'd be a sure-fire way to differentiate yourself from the competition (and make it way pricier). I'll keep dreaming!

yep SRAM is the most expensive, however they have their reason. If you look at it with the perspective of a mechanical engineer, you would understand why. Right now the rear cassette is the most expensive part. The X01 Eagle is $420. Why so much? Well the first 11 rings are single body Steel CNC machined. Shimano on the other hand primarily uses Aluminum Alloy. Weight wise it doesn't really make a difference, as it depends on how you design the parts. But the beauty of having Steel Rings is that it is more resilient against wear and tear versus Aluminum Alloy. SRAM X01 Eagle will net you $1400, XX1 $1200, XT and XTR for a full group set will be roughly half the price.

I don't know if you are already doing this but you should strava some times on a track you know by memory that requires quick shifting in many parts of the trail. That's usually the hardest part about shifting when you have to very quickly while manuevering the bike at the same time shift through a lot of the gear range. Usual example is pedalling into a short technical uphill with a high gear and then having to shift to a very low gear while pedaling and maneuvering the bike. You need the strava times to have some urgency, meaning on a normal ride you don't shift perfectly it's whatever but when racing you need to hit those shifts to reach the best personal times.

Pretty rad, I am right trying a new rear derailer on my 2007 TREK 4300. The bike asked me want I was going t use the bike for and I told them it is more all around bike. It's a Hardtail so I like to be able to ride it with my daughter around the houses we live by, plus it's just fun to do wheelies on and I like to have the local trail on that because it's very simple and the trail is pretty flat so my hardtail is optimum. The bike shop if I would be willing to try a different derailer instead of replacing my show Shimano SLX where do whaler. I was timeout will say very reluctant to give up the ship Mono because that is all I have ridden. At least for a long. I had SRAM on both of my specializes 09 pitch top pad a Sram X-7 in the rear and my P2 Chromo 2010 had a SRAM X-5 short cage on it. So they asked if I wanted to try a sunrace M9 because it was a whole lot cheaper, and supposedly the same as a regular Deore so I went with it. I have now been currently riding it for the past three months. You can definitely tell it's not Shimano and I will most likely go back to at least Aliveo (since it's a 9-speed) but it hasn't had a whole lot problems and the adjustments are very similar to Shimano.

Box One is no longer a Push-Push shifter and is similar to Shimano XT and others. Only sad thing is: Shimano XT allows 4-step downshift and 2-step upshift, whereas the new Box One (Oct 2018) allows 5-step downshift and only one-step upshift. The upshift is possible through both push and pull action, just like the XT shifter.

I'd like to design a drivetrain that can run something like 3x11 or 4x11 reliably. The biggest hurdle would be the risk of overtorquing the freehub with really low gears. Anything below 1:1 multiplies torque at the hub. You'll notice that the big manufacturers try to limit the low gear to around 17 gear inches at the lowest. They try to convince people that low gears aren't necessary because the freehubs can't take the torque. But, they won't admit that. Every now and then, somebody finds a way to run 13 gear inches, or 15, or whatever, and it works fine. But, you can feel the strain, and heavy, strong riders can destroy a freehub in a low gear, in any gear below 1:1, actually. There's an unstated low gear limit, because of torque, and I'd like to reliably exceed that limit somehow.

It’s not about balls... it’s about money. There are plenty of Co.’s that could make amazing derailers with very little money going towards r&d.... the real competition is all the contracts Shimano and Sram already have.... even if a product came out that was undeniably better, it could be 5-10 years before they could even start to negotiate for contracts. It can be done, but it would be a company that didn’t see much success for generations all cause of what the market is already over saturated with.

Nope you didn't "go metric". "half a centimetre" is not the way you say it. It's 5 millimetres mate. Sorry. Using halves, quarters and eighths is not the way metric works. And yes you needed a "few extra inches of cable". Nice try at metrication but I don't think you quite got your head round it yet. You Americans are so very quaint.

I have an old suntour xct derailleur. The one I have sucks, and I generally get the whole assembly mis-aligned by light street riding, however has always been easily put back into place. But considering it has lasted over 20 years with hard shifting, and other things I'd say its a tank. I might switch to box though, it is a very compelling option.

Nice trails! Where are you riding? On subject - I can't understand why Shimano don't shout more about their multi up shift levers since XTR 9 speed. Being able to drop two cogs in one action wins every time for me!

I still hate derailleurs with a passion and only put up with them because I have to, they are just so fragile need regular adjustment. If I had the cash I'd have a Zerode with the Pinion gearbox. Pitty SRAM and Shimano don't enter the gearbox market.

There is another drivetrain that is purpose built with mountainbiking in extreme conditions in mind. It's called the Rohloff Speedhub. It works without a derailleur and is extremely bombproof and maintenance free. You can even run a Gates carbon belt on it for even less maintenance. But it is prohibitively expensive and a bit heavy.

Honda did a good job with their internal system on their downhill bikes (it was in essence a gearbox.) Its a shame they cut the funding! I did hear that they were planning on developing whole range of bikes and not just downhill! Some people i know got a look in at the consumer model and said the gearbox design was one of those "why didn't i think of that" moments, but the factory bikes were really special apparently and not many people ever got a chance to see them...

Seth; I have to know, at 6:54 you used a crimp tool I have never seen before. Bike specific tool? I've seen my fair number of cable swage tools and this one seemed to fit a bike cable swage/cap perfectly. What can you tell me about it? I know, all that work to share a product new to mountain biking and I focus on the wrong part of the video...

I applaud them for having a go. The derailleur is not a great design in my opinion. It would get snapped off quickly by sticks on the trails I ride. The shifter is different, I can't judge the lever action without riding it but I love it's simple servicing.

Patents - break it and end up in court and paying part of your profits to them. Example, Samsung Tablet did this to Apple and Medtronic to Depuy for their spinal systems......

hey Seth! i am a beginner mountain biker , and I've done a couple of races. but i live out in the countryside in Canada, and the most interesting features 8 miles around my house are the ditches at the side of the road witch are lumpy and full of weeds. what can i do to improve my skills with the things i have around me? (grass, fields, trees, mud, and no hill in sight)

I really appreciate this review. i have been curios about Box for a while. However, I am a Sram user for life. You said it downshifts like a Shimano: does it upshift quick and smooth?

For that kind of money I'll go for XTR any day. And somehow the orange collors and text on the shifters makes me think of Shimano SIS stuff. Maybe in a view years when they covered the trial and error money they become cheeper.

That thumb prodding design is a deal breaker for me. Wouldn't want that on my bike. The other stuff looks great though.

well, my shifter is on the brake lever. you push it down to downshift and up to upshift. It's a Shimano Deore. That's why when I rode other bikes, I didn't get used to it quickly.

You did not mention inter-compatability. Is the Box-one shifter compatible with either shimano or SRAM derailleurs? obviously that info applied the other way around also.

seems good to have more options in drivetrains , talking about the rebuild and clean upof the shifter idk what kind of grease/lube this things use! i opened my shimano shifter once and wow what is that white sticky semy dry lube??? it makes shifting feels nice but i dont see such thing as shifter lube in bike maintenance and parts websites, maybe u know what kind of grease is this .
