Last October Zoe Harcombe's Monday Note was on a study examining the health characteristics of people who live to/near 100. It's a very interesting read. One thing she brought up is that living to 100 does not mean you are healthy. Many in that group live with debilitating illness ... they just don't die of it. So longevity may not be the optimal target to shoot for if you do not also maintain robust good health. And longevity research that does not consider more than the age of death probably isn't useful. And by the way, we all eat breakfast ... it just varies what time it happens.

The whole blue zone logic makes me go spare ... we cannot deny the timing of such research, and the associated life of the individuals studied, from birth until now. For someone who's 100 now, what was their childhood like and what foods, quality, quantity available in, say, the early 1920's? Fast forward to someone born in the 1970's in the US/UK - answer the same questions. Can we honestly expect to see more and more centenarians, in good health, in the 2070's ?? And yet, for most (at this moment) they've not experienced war, famine/food scarcity after. Folks eat what's available, when it's available, go without when there is scarcity. And some live long, some do not.

It's what you mainly do that counts not the exceptions. Dr Longo's strategy of fasting mimicking diet is really useful as an adjunct to cancer treatments because it lowers insulin and insulin like growth factor when given with chemo therapy. Standard keto doesn't lower insulin like growth factor, glutamine.

@@annburge291 The definition of a fasting mimicking diet is one that sends you into fat-burning mode, ie. ketogenic. I would imagine Dr Longo's version is very good, one of many that are good. A therapeutic keto diet is certainly different from one where the goal is to lose weight, or maintain weight loss. For epilepsy, the goal is to obtain a high amount of ketones for as long as possible. For cancer any reduction in blood glucose is going to help, but as far as I know there's no way a keto diet can reduce glutamine because the body makes as much of it as it wants.

"Keep in mind that's for people that eat carbs". I don't think a single person will have doubts; people were eating only when food was available for a few million years. And we are positively sure that though feasts were possible, they were also very, VERY rare. In contrast, there were certainly often days without any food, but generally speaking, people were in ketosis almost all the time, probably except for some feasting times, like times they found fruit in the summer (mind you, it doesn't mean that there is fruit just because it's summer, and try competing with birds for fruit, but even insects will eat them before you in a natural environment). So not only the human beings have never been eating breakfast but they naturally didn't even eat every day until a few decades ago. One can only wonder how the human being managed to develop and didn't vanish according to his %$#&(!#.

I think you are correct ...and ketosis is our natural metabolic state . If we are healthier/smarter and more energetic in ketosis , then we are ,inferencially ,unhealthier/ duller and less energetic when out of ketosis . Why would we assume ,therefore, that our natural metabolic state is out of ketosis ?. An assumption so seemingly illogical ,should be proven before being accepted, (in my opinion).
@nikosstamatiou1289
10 ай бұрын
I don't think it's a crime to go out of ketosis. Indeed it seems it's a natural survival mechanism that goes like this: you love sweet, who doesn't?, so at some point in summer you find fruit, and you just can't stop eating them, because fructose does not make you produce leptin, so you just go on eating. now, fructose clogs the liver, causes insulin resistance and before you know it, you have gained quite some pounds. Now, these pounds of healthy fat mean that you will live in the winter while others who didn't manage to obtain it will probably die in the first famine. The problem is not the mechanism itself, it's the abuse we have been doing for the last 50 years, but also in the past 10.000 years in some specific agricultural civilizations.@@kenadams5504

I have been wrestling with the whole timing issue for meals. I have tried to be One Meal a Day for the last year or so. The question is when should I have that one meal? I have favoured lunch time. Huberman seems to suggest that is right ...the setting of circadian rhythms with early morning sunlight, and eating early rather than late is a good idea - but exercise is best performed fasted. Dr Gabrielle Lyon emphasises the importance of eating protein early in the day and having further amounts of protein throughout the day as there is an upper limit per meal on the amount of protein which the body can absorb. Importantly perhaps, not eating protein in the evening seems to be a good thing from the circadian rhythm perspective. So for me, on a very low carb diet, I have a coffee with cream early - do some exercise like a 500m swim and sauna and then eat a moderate protein and fat meal around 11.30am...then small amounts of things like macadamia nuts and kiwi fruit and yoghurt. Before sunset a bit more meat but not much. My understanding is that the studies which use the expression "skipping breakfast" do not really capture intentional intermittent fasting.

The fact that my morning fasting glucose reading is a little bit higher than I would like (possibly due to high cortisol?) (and my partner's is very high), convinced me to try being keto in the morning. This could mean skipping breakfast, but I have been having a fatty coffee (butter, MCT oil and/or a little coconut oil.) After a couple of hours, I get that clean, clear-headed feeling of being in keto, which has convinced me it is a good thing for me to either skip breakfast or keep it high-fat / low-carb, for the morning. Whether some protein is needed in the morning is the other question... I imagine it doesn't hurt to wait until midday, as long as you are not aiming for anabolic activity in the morning. When i included fasting into the mix after 3 days of totally not eating anything my asthma is back. Probably through a stress response which happened although totally fat burning adopted because i did keto before the fast. Which means for asthma there is sth during a low carb or keto diet which reduces the spasm of the the airways which is not there in a longer fasting period. I am an insulin dependent diabetic and extremely insulin resistant. I have extreme dawn effect as well. I have learned that if I eat early in the morning and take my insulin at that time then I only need one dose of insulin instead of taking insulin multiple times per day, which should help reverse insulin resistance.

Isn’t it always sunrise on some point on earth? What’s so special about a local clock? What about people living in different latitudes, such as those living on the polar with no sunrise? What about people waking up at 1 pm? What about people traveling often, flying away from sunrise? For people who are indoor often not knowing when sunrise is? As for eating “breakfast”, isn’t that one what does whenever one break a fast, regardless of 6 am or 6 pm?

it's more about eating when you wake up, but I'm not so sure the same situation applies to people who wakeup after sleeping well, and people who wake up sporadically during the night, or who wake up to an alarm clock

Genetic component? Or family habits & traditions? Obese families can look the same but usually ALSO have the same family habits, upbringing and were taught health in the same way. And often then told this is just how our family looks, it’s “genetic “.

Dr. Chris Knobbe did a talk at Low Carb Down Under recently and he makes it seem like all the problems with carbs are actually from seed oils. I think he uses only data comparison from whole populations like Jp. Au. New Guinea or US to see how consumption of macro's has gone up or down and not looking at specific dietary interventions for specific problems. You really get the idea that eating loads of carbs is OK as long as you avoid the seed-oils. Any thoughts on that?

Healthy user bias at play here. People who eat breakfast are better at trying to take care of their overall health and obediently follow the mantra aboit breakfast being the most important meal of the day.

The devil is in the detail -- and the clarity (and lack thereof) of language is what has me shouting back at my iPad screen on a regular basis. A few examples: 'Breakfast' -- let's appreciate the nuances: WHEN? How long AFTER you wake are you /should you eat? Imagine you're an average worker or school child waking at 6:00am for an early start to the office or school, forcing food down within minutes of waking, vs a retired person or more flexibly employed, who wakes without an alarm, and eases into the morning and maybe eats around 9am ... WHAT? What is on the plate? SAD options or home cooked eggs, a slice of ham or a steak, some grilled mushrooms? HOW MUCH? Filling up on high GI impactful carbs, you're likely to be hangry by 11am. Hubby and I finish our meals by 6:00-6:30pm, hubby breaks his overnight fast at around 10am (sardines, sourdough wholegrain/organic made my me 😊, olives / olive oil (home grown), boiled egg from our free range hens.) I do the same but more around 11am or noon. Main big meal around 4 and if peckish, salamis, cheese, olives for a 6pm snack. When we lived in Spain, the first meal was late morning, cheese, meats, eggs. We're early 60's, no meds (even OTC), lean and healthy. Low GI carb, organic meat and fish, high quality dairy, organic veggies. Valter Longo is appreciating his own importance, it's in his language, he's hyper confident and is enjoying his current rock star status. That's a dangerous position for someone who purports to want to base everything on true, quality science vs observing observational studies.

The problem with all those studies is that "people who skip breakfest" are 99.999% on a high carb diet. Which means they have snacks in between. They are not doing 16/8, that's BS - that cannot work for them...
@defeqel6537
10 ай бұрын
Indeed. Something cannot work for them when they aren't doing it, like intermittent fasting. IF, intentional or not, also doesn't offset other bad habits, like smoking (e.g. at least among my associates, it is common to skip breakfast for a morning coffee and a cigarette, they aren't skipping for health reason but because they aren't hungry in the morning, especially not after coffee and a smoke). Epidemiology continues to produce pointless hypotheses.

Wow, I should be dead. Hated eating food in the morning even as a child . I can honestly say I’ve never had breakfast, I can only start eating only after mid day. Apart from some colds though out my life I’ve never had any illness or health problems . Even now at 70 , no breakfast , no problem, fit and healthy.

12:31 Keeping insulin low, insulin is a response to high blood glucose levels. Pregnant women have naturally high insulin levels. It’s to keep the cause of high blood glucose level low. High insulin level is a result of high blood glucose which in term is the result from high carb meals, which actually just so little carbs. It’s just so crazy. You live to 100 because you eat breakfast and carbs, and if you eat no breakfast and no carbs and live to 100, it’s just your genres.
