I’m so excited for your podcast Shayla. These two interviews have been so informative but also entertaining to listen to. Thank you so much for making the only mom content that actually teaches me and encourages me to try the crazy things I wanna try (breastfeeding, cloth diapers, floor beds)

I’d love to see a podcast about combination feeding - as in breastfeeding and bottle feeding breast milk. I’ll be returning to work in a few months and this is what I’ll need to do/ hope to achieve. Currently EBF. Thank you Shayla for your helpful content 🙏🫶

I loved your talk! Thank you for all the information. Also just wanted to leave a tip, when you store the milk you should write the time you pumped it at, especially because of melatonin and other hormones. Breastmilk has melatonin and helps you baby produce their own when they are around 4 months, it also helps them regulate their circadian rythm (body’s way to know day and night, hormone production included.) So time is important to write down and also if they are sick, or have a cold or whatever, your breastmilk changes. So if you have extra and want to save it, you can use it some other day when they have the same symptoms and it’s going to have everything they need to get better. Hope it helps everyone ☺️ Btw, I love you channel, thanks for taking your time in helping all the other mamas!

I was so happy I overproduced in the beginning and built up a huge stash so I could stop pumping when I went back to work. Then I found out I had the lipase thing and baby totally rejected it! So here I am at 9 months watching this video and pumping 🙃

I’m struggling with my supply and exclusivity pumping…. I’ve power pumped, used supplements, had all the treats and nothing seems to work. Only 1 oz on each breast. It’s exhausting.

I feel ya. The first 4ish months of my baby's life and pumping, I was doing everything you are doing and getting the same result. We supplemented with formula nearly every feed. It was exhausting and heartbreaking. I tried 3 different kinds of flanges, all different sizes. I had a hospital grade Medela pump free thru insurance but that didn't produce any better results than the Medela PISA. For some reason at 4 months my supply increased. I think in part it was hormones. I was really stressed and depressed until the 4 month mark. Struggling to adapt to my identity as a mom and being COVID locked down, super isolated from friends and family. We went on vacation and left the house, it just brought life and hope back for me. So if you're struggling emotionally, I highly recommend focusing on feeling better. Go on walks, get some sunshine on your face. Boobs need oxytocin. You need oxytocin. Other stuff that are factors for me: I drink 150-180 ounces of water every day. I see drops in supply when 1) go to bed hungry, 2) don't eat carbs first thing in the morning (I make potato hash, eggs and toast for breakfast every morning) 3) don't get enough sleep multiple days in a row (for me I need 6 hours or things get nuts) 4) drink less than 150 ounces of water and don't make it up the next day, 5) feel emotionally crapy and sad and hopeless. Oh, and one last thing. I recently got the La Vie Warming Massagers. It's done absolutely nothing for my supply HOWEVER it makes the pumping experience actually feel good, which is a solid gold win in my book. I'm pulling for you Sam! You're not alone!

You may have insufficient glandular tissue. Talk to your doctor about that possibility.

Are you taking fenugreek supplements? Many women actually experience a decrease with fenugreek. Try moringa or goat's rue instead.

Me too. My son is 2 months now.. was really trying to exclusively breast feed but he had extra uterine growth restrictions and loss 25% of his body weight.. I was advised formula , but I started pumping (I wished I was advised to pump right from the beginning) and got the haakaa when he turned 2 months. My milk supply is slowly increasing now.. i really want to give him exclusive breast milk . Any comments?

Yo, thank you ladies so much. This is giving me so much solid information. I definitely am looking into pumping exclusively but I am also terrified of being shamed for it at the hospital or from my doctors.

Willow you can lay down which is amazing 🙌 but it does take several days for your body to get used to the willow suction. But I do agree that the volume limit is rough! Also have an over supply so I can’t use them in the morning.

1. I'm going to need that list of books you read! I too am an avid researcher ! 2. I'm a pediatric SLP who wants to specialize in feeding and I am so curious about your experience with your son Owen! Is there any research out there on breast fed babies who have Down Syndrome?

Oh my gosh, the first 3 and a half minutes are already killing me with the accuracy!! My daughter had no latch issues or anything until I went to work at 8 weeks and then she refused the boob for a bottle for two months, screamed anytime my nipple was near her mouth, and I thought I was ruined. I was breastfeeding and pumping so my supply was probably way too much for her and I had no idea so that combined with working just made it impossible. Then I wasn’t pumping enough to keep up because work was hard and I had just enough of a supply and demand relationship with her latching that when I had to switch to pumping exclusively, it wasn’t as effective and my supply tanked so I didn’t have enough to leave her with just breastmilk. Luckily, through lots of trial and error and google deep dives on mom boards, I found one mom say the thing that changed the ENTIRE game for me and I got her back on the breast. Obviously this technique won’t work for every baby, but I can’t not share it knowing how thankful I am for what she did for me. I did a few things, but mainly I laid her down on the floor and played with her topless. I would swing and dangle my boobs over her and make it a game. I didn’t offer or force the boob into her mouth until she stopped turning away and started opening her mouth again. From then, I didn’t offer if she was too hungry and angry, or if I was too engorged and she couldn’t wait a few minutes for me to manually express a little first. I offered halfway through a feed or at the end if I didn’t think she was full. All of that combined, I was able to breastfeed again for another 8 months until she self weaned around one.

I’m dairy free. The dairy free alternatives can be just as good and I sub hummus for almost everything I’d put dairy on. Sandwiches, salads (with rice), eggs, almost everything! I feel incredible with our dairy so that feeling is worth it for me

I don't understand the need for pumping at all, if you're intending to breastfeed and not leave your baby.

If you don't ever have to leave your baby, feedings are going well, and you don't want help with feedings then there's no need! :) I didn't start pumping until I went back to work, and I always breastfeed my baby when we are together.

Some babies can't latch or transfer milk. My daughter had tongue and lip ties and couldn't latch until 6w, so I pumped and supplemented with formula until she was able to latch.
