Neither my mother nor my grandmother breastfed and have been VERY vocally skeptical of me being able to "commit" or having the supply to EBF. Out of the books I've read and online courses I've taken, this resource has been the most informative and most reassuring to me that when my baby comes this spring I'm going to be more than capable if I do things the right way. Thank you so much Natalie for sharing all your wisdom!!

My baby was starting to fail to thrive and had a short NICU stay. During that stay I had to insist a lot and fight to get any nurse to help troubleshooting the latching problem that landed us there in the first place. Formula was just easier for everyone. Thank God for a nurse that came from a different floor to help me. It was a rocky start but my baby girl and I have learned a lot and I can read her really easy now 💕 she latches perfectly and we’ve barely used any formula since

Thank you so much for this video!!! My first is almost 7 and for the first time I’ve heard that my struggle those first weeks were the right thing to do! I had an under supply and chose to not use bottles or pacifiers just me and it was hell. But was able to get my baby healthy and second baby was so much easier. I remember people telling me to use fórmula all the time to “supplement” to allow others to “help” me take care of baby it was devastating to be trying so hard and not have the support. I so wish I’ve heard her speak sooner but I love the validation ❤️❤️❤️ love this!!!

THIS WAS SO HELPFUL! My baby was in the NICU for 3 weeks and they gave her (my pumped breastmilk) bottles and pacifiers. She’s almost 8 weeks now and establishing our breastfeeding relationship has been our biggest challenge yet. I’ve been establishing/reestablishing my supply by exclusively pumping and putting her to the breast once a day to keep her familiar. We’ve been supplementing formula and giving her a pacifier but now I’m inspired to keep her latched and go all in with exclusive breastfeeding. She does have a bit of a tongue tie so this caused her latch to be pretty painful in the beginning... maybe your guy’s next conversation can touch on that? Thank you so much for posting this!
@tinekecarlson1220

I hope you were able to breastfeed your little one. Both of mine have tongue ties and I wasn't able to breastfeed my first. With the second, we found an amazing lactation consultant who specializes in babies with tongue ties. She also does craniosacral therapy. We also got his tongue tie revised at 6 weeks. His latch isn't perfect yet, but he is doing really well. It's hard to find people who are actually educated about the less obvious tongue ties, and to find anyone talking about it anywhere.

Gah! I feel the same way. We are currently in the process of finding a new pediatrician. Thank goodness for the lactation consultants I eventually went to see. I now know that due to my pre-eclampsia, having severe edema (which in turn added to my baby’s fluid retention) and being on magnesium my baby was always going to loose a decent amount of weight at birth. All due to the many compounding factors that most certainly has her retaining fluid. I was told that I was not making enough milk for my child and that I needed to get on an exclusive bottle regime where I pumped what I could and then supplemented with formula to make up the difference to get my baby back to her almost 10lb birth weight in 7 days. She had lost 13% of her birth weight in 72 hours and I guess that was concerning. I am a first time parent so I jumped at whatever I was told was “best” for my child. Little did I know that this reaction by my pediatrician would result in two months worth of work to get my kid on the breast, many tears and the constant obsessing of if I was providing enough food for my kid. I am so grateful that these woman are putting out this content and hope less women experience this feeling of inadequacy. Our medical system really needs to collaborate more across disciplines to provide the LASTING support mothers and babies need to thrive not just survive.

@@laurenbelus8265 I’m so very sorry to hear you went through all this! I’m not judging anyone who feeds their children formula because how you are able to feed your child is so circumstantial, but it almost feel likes formula companies target first time moms into feeling like they are failing to sell more formula. It’s unfortunate so many pediatricians unknowingly propel that agenda. I hope you’re able to find a pediatrician that works with you. I’m so thankful for ours now who has a very similar mindset as the Lactation Consultant we worked with.

So relatable! 1st birth was in a hospital that offered nasty premade bottles immediately after birth before I even saw a lactation consultant to learn as a first time mom. This pregnancy I got samples from similac that I threw in the trash. Have had a lot to learn about supply regulation. Last pregnancy some well meaning person cautioned me against pumping my oversupply wary postpartum due to fear of mastitis. I regretted listening to them because I ended up with not enough months down the line!! Would take the oversupply and have to pump frequently than an under supply any day! Now expecting another baby and I will be aiming for that oversupply! Plus, I have a toddler who I’ll be giving the pumped milk to as well! 😊

This video is amazing, thank you for the interview. I’ve learned so much and am liking forward to breastfeeding. Just for the record, Sweden’s maternity leave is mostly paid at 80%, rather than 100% salary. And it’s not paid by the employer but by taxes, so taxes are quite high. And stay at home moms are practically non-existent as far as I can tell. There is no tax relief for one income, two parent families, so she is financially pressured to use the state day care after that first year and get back into the work place so that she’s not an “oppressed,” “jobless” woman. For me, the serious restrictions placed on how one can raise one’s children in Sweden (homeschooling is strictly illegal, for instance) balance the benefits of that year of maternity leave.

JUST WOW. I wish I had this video to reference before I had my baby girl 14 weeks ago. As a new mum I was so afraid that my baby was losing too much weight just 24 hours after her birth that I started supplementing right away. I had been giving so much IV fluids before and during her birth that I now am realizing that she lost so much weight because she was also pumped with the fluids. I wish I had know this before I supplemented her and started pumping 2 days out of the hospital. My body doesn't react to the pump well either, I don't get too much but when I hand express I can get more. (HAND CRAMPS THOUGH GALORE LOL) I also wish I didn't swaddle my baby or put her in the swing and give her the pacifier so quick. I am struggling with an undersupply right now and I think it is a result of her using a bottle and me pumping so much in the beginging. When she was born the midwives said she had the best suck that they had seen in a long time. I wish I had trusted my body that it was going to meet the demands for my baby instead of working and doubting myself. Last week I decided I on a whim decided I was finished breast feeling but totally regretted it a few days later so we are back on trying to latch and build up my milk supply. Natalie explained the whole supply and demand part of breastfeeding in a way for everyone to understand which was so amazing. I will be sending this video to all my new mamma friends for them to watch before they give birth. I also feel so much more prepared for my next birth/nursing experience! Thanks for all your down to earth and insightful videos!

Just want to say that the information about Sweden at 9:46 is incorrect (I gave birth and I'm on maternatiy leave in Sweden right now). Parents have 390 days which are divided between the two parents and the father MUST take at least 90 days. If a parent takes 7 days a week of parental leave they will be paid 80% of their salary...so if a mother takes full-time leave at 80% of her salary she gets ~9 months off from work. Mothers in Sweden are also pushed toward formula (they gave my baby formula at 2 days old in hospital against my wishes for no medical reason) and the lactation support in hospital is TERRIBLE! I struggled with breastfeeding in the beginning and the only advice I received from the many specialists I contacted was to "just relax and take it easy" (I still suspect that my son has a tongue tie). Mothers are encouraged to wean from breastmilk around 9 months. Breastfeeding after 12 months is seen as strange.

I don't understand the supply going down thing. I have been raining milk for a solid year and it's like enough for a small village. I'm chubby and I can't tell myself to get thin well. I mean I'm not obese but I stay chubby and giant breasted normally. And I'm addicted to milk and plant milks I probably drink at least a gallon of either every two days. I guess my body is like you've got enough chub so let's turn all this extra into milk. lol My kid hardly wants milk anymore but I still have a ton. I bet back in the day I would have been a wet nurse for a living lol. One thing though is my hair and skin looks amazing as soon as I was into my breastfeeding routine all things hormonal finally felt great like no acne no painful cramping no way too long periods etc idk breastfeeding is the best thing ever. Exclusively breastfeeding made my life easier too because I didn't have to pump and then feed it was just one easy feeding time and then back to sleep.

My baby did not really want me. Once I held him on boobie he just seemed so angry, my let-down was slow. Maybe my ppd made him want someone else to hold him with more peace. I would pump and my mom would bottle feed him and that’s what he loved. His bond with Gma is so strong.

I needed information regarding the undersupply after 6 months or 1 year. Also, how often do you feed your baby post 6 months when they start to take solids? I want my baby to be fed for until he is 2 years old, also want solids ongoing.

I like to say “food is for fun before one” meaning breastmilk is still the main source of nutrients for baby until one and all other table food is just for fun. So you should still nurse on demand, as often as baby wants, and then offer food at meal times and snacks as you would like :)

How would you manage supply if you have to go back to work after 4 weeks postpartum? I have unpaid maturity leave and can’t financially afford staying home longer than 4 weeks and Iv always struggled with supply and pumping

@ Hey Shayla. Awesome content, thank you very much. I have a favor to ask. Please include the guest name (full name) in the title of the Title, also please include the guest name (full name) in the description. I have watched like 30-40 of your videos (we are soon to be parents) and on your videos I don't know who you are talking too unless I go back to the beginning of the video and listen carefully, which isn't fun. Like this video is Natalie (who) . Thanks for the help

Can we do an extended BF one?!?! That would be super! Got a 10 month old and we are nowhere near finished even if the NHS does think “1 years enough”. Go read the WHO hun!

I am wanting to donate breast milk after I give birth. Do you have any information on how that works while trying to breastfeed a baby? I'm wondering after listening to this conversation whether or not it would even be a good idea for me to donate while baby is still breastfeeding because I would have an oversupply and baby might not get the hind milk.

I donated bc I used a haakaa while she was feeding and ended up with an over supply. But I did it for about 3 months and then did the block feeding to reduce

wow this was so helpful. Im 3 weeks PP and BF didnt work out because of my lack of supply and so now I'm Exclusively pumping and supplementing with formula. My milk supply has increased a bit but I'm motivated to bring my baby to the breast and retry. Any advice on inverted nipples?
