From about 3:08 till the end of Mike's solo is unbelievable. The timing, phrasing, command of the altissimo range, and technically of what he was doing here is phenomenal. He does some of the same play on multi phonics as on the Steps Ahead Smokin' In The Pit Album. There are only a few modern jazz saxophonists that even come close. I was fortunate enough to see him live twice. An innovator, and true modern saxophone master. RIP Michael Brecker.

The artist held the top jazz tenor player for the last 10 years of his life. To this day you would be hard pressed to find another sax player that could do what he did and do it as well. One of jazz's greatest masters in my opinion. I now listen to Bob Mintzer and his arrangements for inspiration. May Mike enjoy playing in Gods "A" band in the first seat of the sax section!!

Wow! Brecker fans: don't miss out on "Part 2" of this - I thought it might just be the rest of the band soloing, but it's basically just an INSANE Brecker cadenza for almost 9 minutes

That's an old school sax pick-up. It required a hole drilled into the neck and the signal was sent to a pre-amp, then routed to the signal processors of his choice. Sounds like a harmonizer, plus some kind of envelope filter device that gave him that wah effect. He also had a sampler/loop device that allowed him to create those repetitive bits to play over, I think that was made by MXR at the time, same as what Jaco Pastorius liked to use.....
