He really was America's answer to the plethora of great music coming out of England. It was like an arms race of amazing music and Brian Wilson kept American music strong. Granted, Motown would have had to have been a third major power of course, but dang, such great music.

To say he's a genius is quite an understatement. I, as a guy in the mid-'60's, came as close to worshipping another musician as a guy can get. I think I've bought just about every piece of music he's ever written/recorded there is! Remember his solo CD from about 20 years ago called "Imagination?" Some fine work there, as solo musician.

I can't really add anything to what people have said here, except, a few years ago, on one of the Beach Boy's KZitem pages, I made a comment about how Brian Wilson had suffered so long, and that I hoped he had been able to come to some happiness. A guy answered and said that he had been in a restaurant a few weeks before, and that Brian and his new family had been there. He said they were talking, joking and laughing, and that he seemed to be enjoying his meal and was happy. He said the mood was light and family. I was glad to read that. He deserves it. This is a great video with his daughters and the crew. Makes me happy to see his pride and love in his daughters and their's in him.

Part of Brian's genius is knowing how to delegate. Mike Love's voice works far better for this song. Yes, I know Mike is a laughable dufus, and Brian is a genius. Just saying that Mike's voice texture and his pronounced California accent is part of the soul of this song, even Brian said, Mike's voice was a main aspect of the Beach Boys' sound. And Brian was smart enough to put Carl's voice on "God Only Knows." Brian wasn't an attention hog. He was a perfectionist, who looked at the over all song, and who knew whether his own voice or someone else's was right for a song.
@rbbain2589

You are correct. When he was fucked up and locked in the house he wrote a lot of songs and he said he could sing all the parts and record them but it would not sound like the Beach Boys.

@@michelez715 In Brian's book "I Am Brian Wilson," Brian tells how this song was the first song written immediately after Pet Sounds to appease Mike, as Pet Sounds unspokenly ended Mike's position as main lead singer, which almost destroyed Mike. So Brian said, "Mike as soon as I'm finished with Pet Sounds, you and I will write a song together, just the two of us, it'll be like old times." Mike did write all the lyrics to this song and developed the melody with Brian. Note Mike's signature "descriptive" lyrics, describing the California beach side settings. But from this point onward, Mike was merely "one" of the occasional lead singers, as Carl grew into a big leadership role in both singing and song writing.

From a strictly performance standpoint I agree with you but this one has the extra emotional kick of him singing with his daughters. I just wish Brian still had that falsetto that was just as important as Mike's voice in the original recordings.

I lived it, more or less...the beach cities were populated but the downtown streets had the charm of living near the ocean. It was really different in the 60s. As the song goes, they paved paradise to put up a parking lot. Tiny surf shop names have become clothing conglomerates and plaques commemorate old cool buildings that *used to* be there. It will never return.

The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson in particular, are the only group that intimidated the Beatles because Paul McCartney knew what a genius Brian Wilson was, Beatles put out Rubber Soul, Brian Wilson responds with Pet Sounds which directly led to Sgt. Peppers, if Smile had been finished you can bet the entire landscape of whatever the Beatles were doing would have changed, Paul McCartney genuinely admires and respects Brian Wilson and from what I've seen is still humbled by his presence.

Brian has been writing amazing music, since I was about 5 or so. Yet, his two biggest "hits" are singing right along with Dad! THAT has to mean a lot to Brian! The Brian Wilson Band was here, last year. I am SO glad we went. There was some "midwest band" that was there, too. Kind of BeachAgo, but no "beach boys" were there. Just Brian, Alan and Matt Jardine. The "Ago" half, Chicago! Talk about a KILLER concert, this wasn't! Was TWO amazing concerts. Yes, Matt and Al showed up for "Wishing you were Here!" Wish Dennis Carl, and Carl Dean did. Also, no Terry Kath, either. All 3 were missed. steve
