Wow, thanks for the insight. The 3 movements were intentional on Wilsons part? Or did you just notice this? Wilson's genius is wired to the beyond, he doesnt think directly, wouldnt be surprised if there were three movements, beautifully organized, but wholly unintentional...
@LukeLynch12T19
4 жыл бұрын
@@atlasshocked1538 They were very intentional--Brian Wilson envisioned the original concept as both a tribute to the fundamental elements (being, obviously, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water) and a musical road trip through the America of the 1960's, from Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts all the way across the country to what was originally the Pacific Coast (I can't say for sure whether "Love to Say Dada" would have involved Hawaii) in California, not too far removed from the neighborhood in which pretty much all of the original Beach Boys grew up (all three Wilsons, obviously; Mike Love is their cousin from, I believe, the other side of town, and Al Jardine was a neighbor from down the street who was a classmate of the Wilson boys. David Marks, who came into the band much later, was also a neighbor of the Wilsons, and played guitar with Carl and Brian (on piano) while all three of them were just starting to figure out how to play their respective instruments.). Obviously, this edition reworked LtSD (hint hint) into "In Blue Hawaii", for all-too-apparent reasons... ...And do I even need to go into the "Good Vibrations" *pocket symphony?* Brian Douglas Wilson, man...Genius doesn't even begin to describe him. And this is all without mentioning that *he's been deaf in his right ear from* (I believe) *birth.* Beautiful Dreamer, indeed.

Lynn Turman Not only hard, but expensive -- all those string players, singers, and musicians need to be paid -- AND it requires the best in sound-reproduction and sampling technology. The Beach Boys could not possibly have done this onstage in 1967. Only 23 and composing such complex and complete musical soundscapes that tell the story of the emergence and development of the Frontier and Americana. I think that if this came out - as performed here - in the three movements, with all the complexity of sound and imagery, in 1966/1967 that it would have been TOO overwhelming for people to comprehend. The other Beach Boys themselves couldn't wrap THEIR heads around the advanced concepts and lyrics and THEY knew where Brian was coming from better than suburban America. This is almost too complex to fully comprehend NOW. it is a work of amazing musical reach - it's our privilege to be able to be stunned and amazed at both it's beauty AND - at Brian's triumph and majesty in showing off his masterpiece to the world.

There was a better work of Brian Wilson which was Pet Sounds...There was also a multitude of music as complex as Smile all over Europe and America in a few styles; Musicals as being one of them however at that time the only music people were listening to on mass was popular music simply because the Avant-Guarde had driven a deep rift between pop and atonal classical music which Smile was certainly not the former for the most part. It isn't a case of ''Too overwhelming for people to comprehend'' but rather pop music had its stucture set overwhelmingly by The Beatles who took the basic blues chords and soon opened up the harmonic links that tie many more formulas together. The Beatles came from knowing almost nothing musically and then developed at a staggering pace. Its a real shame Brian wrote his last No1 hit at the age of 24 as he sunk into depression and probably despair also the drugs and Eugene Landy who was only there to have access to a true genius...must add it made my stomach churn over when I saw footage of landy linking arms with Brian just like hetrosexual lovers do...Just puked at the thought of it again. I mentioned The Beatles here not because I'm trying to make comparisons or say who's best but because they both have acknowledged they were trying to top each others songs. Brian says he was jealous of songs like 'I Want To Hold Your Hand'....('this song just blew my mind...the electricity of it blew my mind') 'Norwegian Wood,' 'Michelle' and Starwberry Fields Forever' (Rubber Soul) and Paul McCartney, Lennon 'God only Knows' as Paul stated ''I wish I could write songs like that''...Carl Wilson added he wasn't jealous but was just in awe of the Beatles. I am trying to paint the picture of the strong possibility neither group would have had the reach and intensity without the other and the competition turned out to be healthy...many other bands appeared soon after which was in the WAKE of the Beatles and Beach Boys and this changed everything as bands became very good for they now were required to write their own material and lyrics. 'I am The Walrus' showed you could write seemingly almost nonsense lyrics like a poetical licence instead of having another guy building the song-same for the melodies with the Brill building amongst others. Still to this day noone have topped The Beach Boys in vocal harmony, quality of songs, originality, and sheer beauty ,The Warmth Of The Sun, Kiss Me Baby, God only Knows, to name just a few.

Because there were a lot of lawsuits flying around as to who had the rights to the music and who had the rights even to the name Beach Boys. There were 2 groups that toured, one was Brian and this group and the other was all the rest of the guys from the Beach Boys. I still think there is a huge bone of contention between the camps even today. This is what I had hear. I am sure if one does a little investigating, something pretty similar will come up, but that's the gist of it.

actually Al had his own group with some of the kids from the members, and then toured with Brian. Bruce and Mike still tour together. Mike won a lawsuit for copyright for his lyrics which Brian said he agreed with and should of been done earlier but too much was going on at the time. Mike is only licensed by the BB legal corp to tour with the BB name and has to perform a set list of BB songs and as long as no females appear onstage. Which is why I think it’s cool Brian has a woman appearing onstage here and also uses his own lyrics to Good Vibrations. Good for him. He can do what he wants with his music. He does say he loves Mike and vice versa. And they did the 50th Anniv tour to celebrate the BB music, and hopefully we’ll see a 60th

Your dad and Eugene who were persecuting you were insane. Thank you Melinda for saving him! I saw you and the Beach Boys about 1961 or 1962 at Earl Warren Park in Santa Barbara. I think you have the courage to be you. The mind is not always so linear and we all are in straight jackets it feels like much of the time, unable to be ourselves. You are yourself through your wonderful music. Thank you again and again! Love the animals in your music. Such joyful elastic music! You are ahead of our time!

I've enjoyed the album a million times and will always appreciate the mystique and class surrounding the music. I don't know how accurate the movies about the Beach Boys hating on Brian and the album back in the day were, but I wish they'd gone along with the golden goose and kept it all moving with the genius Brian had spun up. The old video of him singing Surf's Up at the piano alone in 1966 inspired me to become a musician. This is truly a timeless set of songs.

Smile is pure genius. The sounds he created are amazing. He is the reason I did my internship in LA.--early beach boy songs were my calling. Most interesting, Brian's demons were anger, criticism and pressure. I have written books on all of these subjects. If only I were a beach boy, I could have helped him early on. I am thinking of calling my new E course based on my last book Performing Under Pressure, Pressure and Mercy. It would be fitting homage to one of the greatest musical composers of all time. I saw him in person about three years ago in Brooklyn. Just wonderful, more than a concert, an experience.

This is 2004 and some of the players backing him are the same as Pet Sounds 2002 in London. Wilson actually looks better in than he did in 02. He's a lot more fragile today 2016. Jeff Foskett deserves a lot of credit, he does the vocals Brian can't anymore. In 2016 Jeff was replaced on vocals by Al Jardine's son for the Pet Sounds 50th tour. His band manager Darius (keyboards) said Wilson came of staged, swayed back and forth with his eyes closed and said "Darius I did it". He never thought he could accomplish playing SMiLE live. It was flawless. SMiLE (2004) is the proof that he is a genius as if the previous 38 years weren't enough. Comparing this and Pet to the sounds the BBoys had in the 60's you can understand why Mike Love didn't have much of a role in Pet Sounds or SMiLE which Wilson first tried to record in the last 60's I think. Love just couldnt get the new Brian Wilson, Love wanted to continue with the "tried and proven cars and girls" He just want "Yeah Yeah I Love You" sounds but they had moved to Rubber Soul and Sgt Pepper. Wilson recognized that. Genius.

Some of the things I read about Mike did not impress me. Brian had all this pressure to make the album, and he was writing this music that was clearly genius to anyone with a pair of ears and a real love of creativity and music. Seems like Mike was oblivious to that. Was he concerned for Brian and the pressure he was under? Mike's main love and concern seemed to be for commercial success. Brian is pretty clearly motivated by his love of music, you can see it. Mike loves himself, money and fame. One's an artist and the other's an opportunist.

This is my answer to those naysayers who - because they don't like Brian Wilson or his style of music - .Should Wilson abandon a genre of music which was his sole creation because some think he should? Should Steve Cropper and Otis Redding have abandoned the Memphis Sound because some didn't like it? Should Barry Gordy Jr. have abandoned Motown because naysayers didn't care for the style? Should Gershwin have abandoned Rhapsody in Blue" because it was too for out for some? How about Beethoven? Why don't we all just give up because somebody out there doesn't like what we do? Not only did Brian Wilson create an entirely new genre of music, he is an inspiration to so many of us because he is also an example of the power of the human spirit to overcome impossible and seemingly insurmountable odds. Before one judges this man, walk a mile in his shoes. I celebrate the man and the genius of Brian Wilson.

Smile is more ambitious in that the sound is more 'spacey' and the lyrics are hard to interpret. It stretches the mind. But it's a feel-good story for Brian to complete the project so many years later. Apparently, his mental problems peaked during its aborted production. No doubt Brian Wilson is the consummate artist. But Pet Sounds is more enjoyable, musically and lyrically.
