There's an element of tuning in between stations on shortwave radio that puts me in mind of the theremin. Locating something interesting, something hidden. It is easy to wave away Brian Wilson as an eccentric but his lucidity was faster than his verbal acumen. His problems were largely organizational. It is a miracle therefore that the output is there for us to hear. In that respect he like a Van Gogh or a Tesla. He prioritized his vision over almost everything else, and as we've seen time and again, society rejects and exploits the visionary. Brian Wilson must have been a handful. But wow! What he allowed us to carry!

The "theremin" sound on Good Vibrations was not made with a theremin like the one Brian is sitting behind in this video. It was made with an electro-theeremin aka a slide theremin aka a tannerin aka Paul's Box, and played by Paul Tanner, who was a trombonist in Glenn Miller's band. The theremin, like the one in front of Brian, is the only musical instrument you do not touch to play. You touch the tannerin by moving a slide up and down the scale. Brian used a tannerin when he was touring, and you can see it played in some of the videos from his tours.

Capitol Records was pushing the theremin as far back as the 50s. They released a single with Theremin as the artist ? No human name, just "theremin". Besides the Beach Boys Lothar and the Handpeople were also a Capitol act that used it.

Brian was 50 years old here - he looks far far younger and incredibly youthful - Dr. Landy had him working out everyday - super clean diet, no drugs no alcohol, tons of supplements, vitamins - you can see the benefits of his healthy lifestyle -

this solidifies to me that carls death made him the way he is now. he was almost completely normal here. his symptoms definitely worsened after carl and the overmedication made him loopy and distant

I agree. In recent years, interviewers can barely get a word out of him. He's shut down, basically given up, just takes the path of least resistance.

@@dmer-zy3rb it certainly isn’t- but considering how bad things get after this, i’d say this is closer to him being normal than after carls passing

@TrueSeed-ft1jn "This guy?" "This guy" is one of the few musical geniuses of the 20th Century. He is also mentally ill with Schizoaffective Disorder, and has been for over 60 years. In 1990 he was in the process of being involuntarily released from the "care" (read prison) of an abusive psychologist who eventually had his license to practice revoked. Sometimes it's good to do a little research before you comment.
