Brighton Park was a unique place, one of the most fascinating--and antiquated--rail locations anywhere. It controlled the point where the former GM&O crossed the NYC (CR&I), B&OCT, and PRR "Panhandle" tracks at grade on crossing diamonds. It was not a true interlocking as there were no track circuits or route locking. It was controlled by a "switch tender" who occupied a small cabin between the former B&O and PRR tracks. All trains approaching the junction were required to come to a full stop; they were allowed to proceed only when signaled by the switch tender, who, after checking that there were no conflicting moves, used manual semaphores to grant permission to proceed. Visiting Brighton was like stepping back in time to the earliest days of rail technology. The Junction has been controlled remotely by NS dispatchers using modern signals since 2007.
