Brighton Park Junction (also known as the Panhandle Junction) was where I went after railfanning Nerska further West. I never spent a lot of time here but today it seemed busier than usual. For those of you that don't know, Brighton Park is where the NS Chicago Junction Line, CSX Blue Island Subdivision and the old NS Panhandle Branch cross the CN/IC Joliet Subdivision. Brighton Park was once famous for it's manual interlocking with semephore type signals. They have been gone for a few years now. The NS and CSX double track main lines are the same that pass through Ash Street less than a mile North of here.
Today I saw some interesting operations including the local on the Panhandle Branch.
9:28AM-
A Northbound UP freight on the CSXT makes it's way back to home trackage through the low speed area.
UP SD70M #3938
UP SD70M #4736
9:30AM-
Another UP train, this one being on the NS CJ, "races" the other through the junction.
UP SD9043MAC #8257
UP SD70M #4136
9:38AM-
Amtrak Lincoln Service 303 now has the light and proceeds South
P42DC #112
P40DC #821
9:41AM-
A classic unit on the NS roster coasts on by heading to the switch leading to the Panhandle Branch.
NS GP38-2 #5152
9:49AM-
Minutes later, the hi-hooded Geep switches onto the Panhandle and runs to one of the local industries to pick up some cars.
10:09AM-
In the meantime, Inbound Amtrak Lincoln Service 300 is seen splitting the new signals with a ratty NPCU in the lead.
NPCU #90218
P42DC #33
10:11AM-
The NS Geep now returns with a cut of hoppers from a local industry, ready to be returned to 55th St Yard.
10:21AM-
Back on the main line, the local reverses back to 55th St Yard.
11:14AM-
I was driving down Archer after leaving Brighton Park and when I crossed over the Belt, I saw something red coming. I stopped and caught this SOO unit leading a manifest onto the 55 Line which will take it to West Clearing.

Still tons of action to come at Pine Junction, make sure you view it!
