I really wanted to find a quaint English village to end a Christmas cycle ride on and Chipping Sodbury really fitted. I used to live there many years ago for a short while and this seemed like a great opportunity to find a route suitable to cycle there and hopefully find Christmas lights and a pub with a fireplace to end on.
It was an icy cold start. I couldn't get on the first train along with about 30 other people due to Christmas shoppers, an hour wait made the cold get right into my bones, but I got there in the end.
Starting at Bristol Temple Meads we take the familiar Bristol to Bath Railway Cycle Path, a near traffic free route on Sustrans Route 4. On this occasion though we ride only around one third of the route to bath splitting off at the Mangotsfield disused railway station remains which makes a good junction to head north towards Yate, passing through Westerleigh along the way and ultimately on to Chipping Sodbury.
In Yate we get to ride on 'The Road to Nowhere', a dual carriageway constructed in 1974 but never opened. When I live in the area I never knew about this strange ghost road along with many other parts I had failed to explore at the time. It was only when Tom Scott produced a video about it I decided I needed to find a way to shoe-horn it into a cycle ride.
I hope you enjoy this festive and cozy cycle ride.
Thank you to all those who have supported my films, viewed, liked and commented, it really is appreciated.
Thank you on this occasion to The Royal Oak Pub in Chipping Sodbury and all the shops and venues that made the high street so idyllic.
Have a great holiday!
