The material is called gabardine, the smock you are wearing is a 95 pattern, the earlier 94 had the rank on the shoulders and a small pocket on the left sleeve that would hold a notebook and pen.

Yep just to reiterate what someone has already said, the shirt you're wearing is the Soldier 95 shirt (as are your trousers, pants, whatever). Your favourite shirt is the old 'tropical' or jungle shirt from the 1970s up to the 90s, and the other one is a commercial piece that might have been used in a trial.

Cotton/Polyester mix. Tantalus was special issue, not a manufacturer, maybe some of the last dpm ever made. The smock (modified dp) was cool but quite heavy with pit zips etc if I remember correctly. dpm is highly effective and has got to be one of the all time classic patterns

The third one is an early jungle/ tropical shirt, they were always lighter in colour. Jungle trousers are very scarce as they were favored by sqaddies in temperate climates because they dried out quickly.

Today driving home from boston to VT I stopped in NH and found a MINT condition S95 smock. Ive wanted one for so long I didnt care about the price. The best part though was when she rang it up is was $20 less than the tag price. Works great here in VT. I like mixing m81, flecktarn, and dpm. I still need to find a blouse, and trousers, and the gortex since I also collect etc.

Welcome to the absolute nightmare of trying to date British DPM.. i once read that no design or shade of the print can automatically exclude it as 'old' but certain shades & prints cannot be 'new'. I'm an amateur collector & it's often a nightmare dating DPM.

Contrary to your opinion, no the use of cotton in combat uniforms was not simply militaries being cheap. Field testing in times past consistently found soldiers reporting higher cotton content as more comfortable, especially in warmer climates. Today, microfibers and other textile technology are narrowing the gap between synthetics and cotton, but i still think a mix of the two is best.

The shirt your wearing is 95 Pattern/ Soldier 95, the Tantalus shirt is possibly a prototype for trials, the third is a much earlier Tropical issue shirt. The tropical issue kit was banned for use in Northern Ireland because it’s not good when petrol bombs are in use… By the way Derby (a city in the East Midlands of England) is pronounced Darby because we like confusing foreign people with our place names 😉

Well these days it’s really hard to say, nothing is as cheap as it once was, not even Milsurp, but the army ACU always seems to be cheap, but l do not like that pattern as is, but you can dye it to make it better.

Your older favourite jacket (we call them a smock) is a '68 pattern if you want matching trousers look for '68 pattern trousers. They were produced from 1970 until 1984 when the '85 pattern superseded them.

@@marshfootoutdoors in 1985 I was issued at '68 Para smock, we all wanted them as they were much better than the '85 more "Gucci" as the term was back then, made us feel like Vets already lol. Try the new mtp smocks, dyed with olive dye they look great and are a great upgrade.
