Americans say grocery store, supermarket, or simply "the store", as in, I have to go to the store. Everyone knows that it's the grocery store or supermarket. Every state, county and municipality can levy taxes, and there's 50 states, over 3000 counties, and even more municipalities. It's impossible to include the tax.
@JustMe-dc6ks

Not impossible, just inconvenient for broadcast advertising. The label printer could do the tax calculation as easily as the cash register does. Fun fact: Gas (petrol for the British) prices are listed with taxes already included (and for some reason in mils like 1.999 instead of just dollars and cents. Gotta get that extra nine tenths of a cent without bumping the dollars place.)
@jlpack62

@@JustMe-dc6ks The printing would have to happen locally on everything sold, and affixed to the products. Like I said, there are thousands of US Counties that have their own tax levies, within states that have their own rules as well. Then, within the counties themselves, there might be dozens of individual municipalities that also levy taxes. Then, within those municipalities might be different taxes on different types of items, and special districts where additional taxes are collected. It would be logistic nightmare to try to print different labels for the thousands and thousands of different taxing possibilities. In the USA, a sales tax rate might be 7% when you buy that an item, but that 7% may be broken down into different small percentages for the state, county and municipality. Impossible? Technically no. Logistically a nightmare + effectively impossible? Most definitely.

When there isn't a tax included in the price of the item, it lets you know exactly what everything actually costs for the consumer. With a VAT tax, you don't know what price you are paying for the item. It also makes it easier to forget you are paying those taxes. That's why the government takes it's taxes directly out of your checks every payday. That way there isn't a rebellion every April 15th. It's all optics.

I'm with nearly everyone on this. Local stores could include the tax in the final price, but it would be labor and logistically intensive if the retailer relies on outside label printing but it would also change the advertised prices (likely upsetting vendors). Some states and counties have no sales tax, but even some cities and I believe special taxation districts collect an extra half cent or more. If you live in the US long enough, you get used to estimating the final cost. And with people paying electronically more and more, this exact change thing matters less and less. Foreigners love working out scenarios where this sales tax method bites them at the till and it reminds of a conversation I had a couple decades ago; a European once claimed to me that US notes were confusing, not just the coins which legitimately are, but the paper. At that time I think only the US 20s were colored but the bills are still the same size, unlike the multicolored multisized Euro notes. "I can open my wallet and know exactly how much money I have at a glance," he bragged. I asked "How often could you possibly do this that it would help you in a meaningful way?" He didn't have an answer.

A big reason behind the sales tax thing is that the corporate stores have stores all around and rather than each store having different prices (because sales tax can change between zip codes) they have their prices all the same in the listing. That way I don’t go to a store and buy something listed for $3 and then go down the street to the same store brand and get the same product for $3.25. Instead they list it at both stores as the same price, say $2.99, so the perception is they are the same at all stores, but in reality it’s different at check out because of the locations imposed sales tax. It’s all ease of marketing and system set up. You can set every store up the same and then just tell the register device to add whatever tax it is in that area. It’s a pain, but there is reasoning behind it.

Exactly. Living in the Chicagoland media market, there are a few states, several counties, and dozens of municipalities, all of which have different tax codes. This is why eggs are kept refrigerated in the US (copied from a food safety website) - "In the United States, after the eggs are laid by the chickens, they go through a cleaning process. The eggs are washed in warm water and a detergent. After washing, they are rinsed and cleaned with a sanitizer to remove any remaining bacteria. The eggs are then dried to remove moisture from the surface. The result are eggs that are clean on the outside, and look spotless. However, washing and sanitizing the outside of the egg removes the egg’s cuticle. The cuticle is a natural layer that protects the egg from harmful bacteria getting inside. If the egg had been fertilized, this is how the egg naturally protects the embryo while it is developing. Cleaning the eggs removes the cuticle, so the eggs must be kept at refrigeration temperature. Otherwise, the bacteria could easily enter the egg and multiply to dangerous levels. By keeping it out of the danger zone, salmonella can’t multiply rapidly."

Axe and Lynx are made by the same company. They couldn't use Axe in the UK because someone else had the rights to the name. The same is true of Lays and Walkers. The candy bar thing is even more interesting. The US names are the "originals" developed by the Mars family. One of the Mars siblings ran off to the UK with the same recipes and established his version of the company there. It was not approved by the US Mars company. He switched up the names to "hide" his deception. Finally - sales tax. Our sales taxes are applied at a local (not national) level. Each state, county and city has it's own taxation rate. So you may pay 6% on the dollar in Maine and 9.75% on the dollar in New York,. Printing the final price is difficult because the final cost might be different 20 miles away. Still, the highest sales tax in the US is considerably lower than your VAT.

We use "till" here regularly, but here the till is specifically the little drawer that goes inside the cash register that holds the bills and coin, or sometimes it's just shorthand for the monies in the drawer. So, for example, at the end of their shift the cashier would "grab their till" and take it to the office, to "count the till" or "balance the till." They'd either take the whole drawer insert with them, or just pull out and place the money in a pouch to carry it. Either option would still be referred to as the till. As well as calling it the cash register, businesses also call it the POS, short for Point of Sale. It can refer to the whole checkout area, or the machine specifically. It's creeping into general public use a bit, too, though still mostly used by just the workers.

I'm sure you've been told this, but sales tax isnt added to the price up front because most of the products you buy from a store are sold nationwide, and are frequently advertised as being that specific price. It is, perhaps, printed on the packaging, or perhaps there are commercials or radio ads discussing how much it costs - but the problem is that sales tax will vary depending on where you are. Every state taxes at a different rate (and sometimes taxes different things, like some states add on a bottle tax that can be refunded if you recycle your plastic battles, but not all do) and often a county or city also will have different rates, so the sales tax is not generally added into the up front price, because this place might add 7%, this other place might add 9%, and that place over there might not add anything at all.

Hypermarkets, commonly called big box stores of supercenters, are places like Wal-Mart and Target, where part of the store is a grocery and part is a department store. They are roughly the size of an aircraft hanger.

This is by no means a common thing in America, but there is one grocery store nearby that lists the price that the store paid for an item, but not the price that we pay. At the grocery they add 10 percent to the price, and sales tax to any eligible items, with most food items not having a sales tax in my state, but with other things like candy, soda, beer, and toiletries requiring it. So you have to do even more extra math to figure up your grocery bill.

I always thought that the reason sales tax is not included is the amount changes occasionally and companies don’t want to re-label the entire store when it happens. Plus different areas have different sales tax, even 2 cities right next to each other can have different amounts, like currently the city I live in sales tax is 7.75%, the city area right next to us (about 2 miles down the freeway) is 8.25%. So companies that pre-price some items like Walmart, Target, etc, would have to do individual labels for each area they ship to which would also be a time consuming process.

Unfortunately there are many considerations to work out final costs. Sales taxes differ by state. Some items are taxed at the state level while other items do not get taxed at all, which also depends on the state you are shopping in. For example I live in Indiana, where the state sales tax is 7%. Most grocery items do not get taxed, while others are taxed at the state level. Also the county in which I live imposes a food & beverage tax of 1% jn addition to the state tax rate. That tax is mainly imposed on foods and beverages sold in restaurants and delis located within grocery stores and gas stations and convenience stores. There are also some organizations which get goods and services at zero taxes.

I may be wrong but my understanding of VAT is that it is a sales tax added to products at every level of sale. It's taxed at sale from manufacture to wholesaler, from wholesaler to retailer. So the tax adds up as it goes thru the system. I know what I say here is a basic description so if anyone knows more or knows if I'm way off, please lets me know.

All total, there are about a thousand different grocery/food chains in the US raging from national, to regional, to local... and that's NOT including specialty chains such as Asian, Halal, Latin, etc. markets. On taxes - taxes are different EVERYWHERE - its easier to fold taxes into cost in a top down system where all power and regulation derives from London down as opposed to the US which is composed of countless competing jurisdictions operating under a common framework - national, state, county, municipal, special limited taxes zones, etc. all with their own tax schedules it's just easier to do it at the point of sale - it's not that hard once you're used to it.

As far tax goes you have to remember that each state is basically like it’s own country. You have different states with different tax and different counties, cities etc with different tax percentages. When you put that together it doesn’t make sense economically to have each store that is owned by the same company purchase and print out a different price tag according to every state, county, city etc tax percentage. Then when a price changes a whole new batch of price tags and till or cash register programming etc all has to be redone when in reality having a basic price then the tax difference added up at the end makes more sense for such a large and diverse country.
@Melissa-wx4lu

This might better explain the sales tax issue. (One of them at least) Many products, especially in Walmarts, come in PDQ boxes. meaning a large display case with many of the products inside. This case may say $2.98! on the front. Now, how would this company print all the boxes it needed to cover the many different sales taxes? Each state, each county, each town may have its very own sales tax...and it changes at least every year. The easy thing to do is to just print on the base price and send them out across the country. Even if every state had the exact same tax across the whole state, that would still be 50 different prices. Now think about each city/town. thousands of different prices. Grocery stores have whole teams whose sole job is to change the price tags when price changes happen. imagine the chaos if they had to do this every time a .03% sale tax gets approved to raise money for the library.

So funny. And Bees, variety and options are always good!!! **In the US, states are self governing and are free to tax their citizens at whatever rate the people in that state or even county desire. For example in my state of Washington we pay no taxes on income but we pay sales tax on items we buy. In our neighboring state of Oregon they have tax your income but there are no sales tax (VAT) on anything! So whenever I am buying an expensive item I travel down to Oregon and save a lot of $$. I recent bought a new lawn mower and blower and saved over $400. I love that there is not sales tax in Oregon but I love that Washington doesn't tax my income. Property taxes are very reasonable here too. There is a lot to love about Washington. 👍💜

Here’s the main reason for the sales tax being added at the point of sale, as opposed to the being added into the the displayed price on the item. Sales Taxes are divided up amongst different public entities, & can change for one of those entities every 2 years at election time or even at the start of every year for an expiring special project tax. Repricing every item in the store is costly & time consuming. Here’s an example of how taxes are broken up. This is the current Tax rate for the city of Colorado Springs, in El Paso County, in the State of Colorado. If you are in a different city or county in Colorado, the tax amount will change, based on that City & County’s tax amount, but it’s usually not by much. Current City Sales & Use Tax Rate: Effective January 1, 2021, the City of Colorado Springs sales and use tax rate has decreased from 3.12% to 3.07% for all transactions occurring on or after that date. The combined amount is 8.20%, broken out as follows: 3.07% City of Colorado Springs (self-collected) 2.00% General Fund 0.10% Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOPS) 0.40% Public Safety Sales Tax (PSST) 0.57% 2C Road Tax 2.90% State of Colorado 1.23% El Paso County 1.00% Pikes Peak Rural Transit Authority (PPRTA)
