For anyone wondering about the crack in the hub flange, since it was only cracked at one spoke hole, this wouldn't be an immediate threat. IF you take it to a proper bike shop, they will tell you that you'd need to change the hub too. You can ride that wheel even if you took that one spoke out where the hub was cracked and it would still be fine but of course the two spokes either side would have great than normal stress. To conclude, take it to a shop if you're not confident in truing the wheel as this video doesn't quite clearly show how difficult truing a wheel is to a newbie since you need to not only have it radially true, laterally true, dished, and the spoke tension needs to be set properly. Adjusting one of these four things will directly affect the other 3. Also to note, dishing the wheel requires a specialist tool as well as checking the spoke tension. The rest will just be the spoke key. I am a bicycle mechanic and have been for many years so if anyone has questions, I am more than happy to help! Great video James!

All laced up. Here goes. Ready to put some tension in those spokes and praying I manage to make a true wheel. (Without a truing stand!)

Thank you for this informative video. No doubt it was a case of "Houston, we have a problem" when you found that crack! I would have been unhappy about the possibility of it opening up under tension from the spoke. You can buy new internals for these hubs but I have never seen new shells advertised. It looks as though you opted not to interlace the short Brompton spokes; I'm not sure about the merits of this.

I will need to view your other videos on wheel building, so thanks in advance for sharing the information. I use a Brown Rawplug through the tape and the rims valve hole. It keeps the rim tape from creeping. Prior to fitting the rim tape loop a thin small cable tie around the rim tape (smooth face to the underside of the rim tape). The loop should be big enough for your hooked index finger and a gap. Once the rim tape is completely in the trough centralise it via the cable tie loop, then remove the cable tie. Long winded but hopefully the idea has come across. Thanks again for the videos. Take care.

Based on Brompton website wheel datasheet, the QRIM-28-STD rim (Double wall rim - standard drilled ) seems should be only used on front wheel or 1-2 speed rear wheel.
@jimlondon

And for hub gear rear wheels use QRIM-28-AGL (angle drilled). The two are distinguishable by red and blue stickers as mentioned in the video. I buy mine from brilliantbikes.co.uk/84-brompton-rims-spokes

Thanks very much for the helpful video. FWIW, I find it easier to hold the hub in a vice. After doing the drive-side, I was a bit lost at where and how to start with the first spoke on the non-drive-side.

Many thanks for sharing your knowledge & posting this excellent video, a very clear & succinct demonstration. I feel more confident at 'having a go' myself now - when the time comes. (I have a Sachs 3 speed internal hub on my M3, any idea as to what spokes would be needed for that model?)

Thanks Nick. According to brilliantbikes.co.uk/content/21-brompton-spokes - the spokes you need have been discontinued by Brompton. The page also lists the spoke type, which depends on whether you have a modern double-walled rim, or an older single-walled rim. If it were me, I'd go for a new double-walled rim, and you might be able to get the spokes made elsewhere. I've had excellent service from spokesfromryan.com when I have needed custom spokes cut.

These are 146mm spokes (for Sturmey Archer hub and double-wall standard rim). The standard Brompton spokes are: 132mm PG 14G - Shimano dynamo front wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 133mm DB 14G - SON dynamo front wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 135mm PG 14G - Shimano dynamo front wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 137mm DB 14G - SON dynamo front wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 145mm PG 14G - standard front wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 146mm SB 13G - Brompton Sturmey Archer rear wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 148mm PG 14G - standard front wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 149mm PG 13G - Sturmey Archer rear wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 151mm DB 14G - 1 and 2 speed rear wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 154mm PG 13G - 1 and 2 speed rear wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 155mm DB 14G - super light front wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 158mm DB 14G - super light front wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim (cross laced) I buy mine in the UK from Brilliant Bikes. I also have one Brompton front wheel with an unusual Son dynamo hub, for which I need to get straight pull spokes custom cut to 144mm - I use Spokes From Ryan for these.

What really made that edge of the rim to turn like that. We don’t think it is out of wear. We think you might have hit something very very hard to make such rim turn to happen.

This is a standard 16" double wall angle-drilled rear rim for a Brompton. The spokes depend on the rim and the type of hub. The standard Brompton spokes are: 132mm PG 14G - Shimano dynamo front wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 133mm DB 14G - SON dynamo front wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 135mm PG 14G - Shimano dynamo front wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 137mm DB 14G - SON dynamo front wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 145mm PG 14G - standard front wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 146mm SB 13G - Brompton Sturmey Archer rear wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 148mm PG 14G - standard front wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 149mm PG 13G - Sturmey Archer rear wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 151mm DB 14G - 1 and 2 speed rear wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 154mm PG 13G - 1 and 2 speed rear wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim 155mm DB 14G - super light front wheel with 2013 onwards double wall rim 158mm DB 14G - super light front wheel with pre-2013 single wall rim (cross laced) I buy mine in the UK from Brilliant Bikes - which also has specs on their site so you can check you have the correct spokes before you buy. I also have a Brompton front wheel with an unusual Son dynamo hub, for which I need to get straight pull spokes custom cut to 144mm - I use Spokes From Ryan for these. If you are using a different rim / hub, you can take measurements of your hub and rim and use a spoke calculator.
