For those debating whether this was originally a Boss song, a Rage song, or even a Guthrie song (which it was not), I wonder how many people notice that the 3rd verse was lifted directly from Joad's monologue in "The Grapes of Wrath." This song stands on its own, but has its greatest impact if you understand what Steinbeck was trying to tell us. Read TGOW and you will be astounded at how eerily relevant it is today--and that's why it is a classic. A deserving recipient of the Nobel Prize.

I was young when I got into Bruce, I think I was about 12, back in '92 when Human Touch and Tucky Town came out, I got them both for Christmas and listened to them non-stop. Then I got into his older stuff, like Tunnel Of Love, River and Darkness. All those albums, Lucky Town, Ghost Of Tom Joad, and U.S.A. -- especially now. The only difference is that now, I understand his lyrics. I understand what he is saying, sometimes that is the best part of his music. His words are the finest poetry.

yo boris, i'm glad yer a bruce fan. bruce has always been open about Dylan being his main inspiration for music making. i'm sure you've seen springstein live and realize that he doesn't do the whole acoustic guitar/harmonica much. it's just his homage to one of his heroes. i dunno about you, but if i could, i'd definitely try and perform a song in the same style as someone who inspires me.

Brilliantly deduced and spot on. TGOW was written by a visionary who understood that we would, someday, repeat the disaster. We as a specie do two things better than all the rest; we continually shit in our nest and repeat mistakes because we fail to learn from past experiences or listen to those who have "been there, done that" There is a reason God does not allow us to live forever; we couldn't stand to be so disgusted so long: the frustration would be unbearable.

For the record - John Steinbeck - (Tom Joad in Grapes of Wrath) - Then I'll be all around in the dark - I'll be ever'where-wherever you look. Wherever they's a fight so hungry people can eat, I'll be there. Wherever they's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll be there... I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad an'-I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry and they know supper's ready. An' when our folk eat the stuff they raise an' live in the houses they build-why, I'll be there.
