enjoy the learning journey, learning to surf is an amazing experience! stay safe, being hit by a surfboard is dangerous. In the video clips of you trying to catch a wave, there are already people up and riding before you, so you shouldn't be attempting to catch those waves.

Gotta be careful dropping in. Look left and right before you go, just like crossing the street. Also keep your chest up and look and lean in the direction you want to go, not straight into the shore.

You probably know a lot of this but applying it in the surf is a lot harder. If you sit very far in then a lot of waves will have been claimed before they get to you because they've already broken somewhere along the line. You also should be sitting on your board until the wave is about 3-5 seconds from you so you can see everything and know if you have a safe lane to go. Don't be afraid to catch the face of the wave, its a lot more mellow than the unstable white water. Most of the waves in the video are breaking on top of you or have already broken. That's more difficult even for better surfers. Also you should try to practice your pop up on flat ground so you can have a plan and some muscle memory when you do get a wave. Ride a skateboard (long or short) and start getting used to the knee bend and balancing efficiently. It helps a lot. Paddling will improve as you go out more and watch some videos to get a structured technique, this will only help you to paddle faster and use less energy. Its much better to let your daughter catch her own waves or be a distance about from her 10+ feet. Remember your board is about 8 feet and heavy. Two unstable surfers is a recipe for injury, both people can accidentally hurt each other in some way. I know that's your baby girl, but she will be safer falling without another board and person to avoid while falling. What happened in the video is very common because you're always blind when breaching and its up to luck to not hit a board. Once you've had this happen to you, you learn to breach with one or two hands trying to block a possible board above. Don't be afraid to sit in the line and talk to some people out there! A majority of the time people are very nice and will give you tips if you ask. They will also appreciate less obstacles to avoid while on the wave. Know that some of them are also beginners and they can't always carve around you. If you actually read all of this then I hope you progress fast enough to enjoy surfing without too many injuries! With just some basic things to keep in mind you will be loads safer and have so much more fun!! I wish you the best and good luck!

Thank you! I’m still working on applying it. But a few of those I haven’t heard before. It is a beginner beach so it’s possible he was learning to surf too. I think the hardest thing for someone starting off like me is where to find the line up. When I look out at white plains the surfers look the stars in the sky. Scattered everywhere with no real pattern. I don’t want to be the person that drops in on someone else. But I think your advice of just going up and talking to a few of them will help. Thank you!

8:57 Surfing is definitely challenging. Also a beginner here, the lesson is that when you paddle for a wave you look at the wave just until it picks you up. Here you were looking but then you paddle for 2 seconds without looking, that's too long when in the ocean, trust me, i have learned the hard way😂 You must look at the wave, over both of your shoulder and see what the wave is doing, even if you just want white water. That way you will not only catch more and better waves but also avoid accidents which can be expensive to repair and take long to heal in the case of a fin or hard board in a soft body part, hehehe

@@Fitandover40 Thank you again! 😊 I grew up mountain biking, hiking, and rock climbing and I have to say surfing has been the biggest challenge I've faced. We are stationed out here and it's hard to not at least try to learn. Especially for my girl.

@@theWiggyFamily absolutely! It takes a long time. Get a surfskate if you have the chance, it will help a lot, specially on the beginning stages. Keep it up :)
