Long story short. I was performing a solo act in a small bar, in mo. No crowd, early. Cept for 2 ladies, sitting at bar. Was very dimlit place. Lady came up & said I hear you do alot of Dwight & Merle & Buck. I said, yes I do. She kept requesting songs. We were introduced & I felt kinda,"duh", when I realized, it was Bonnie Owens. Anyway, she asked if she could sing, with me & I said," ofcourse". We shared the stage, for the next 2+ hours. She was very humble & sweet as can be. She mainly wanted to just sing harmony. I wish we had these phones, back then. It was in 1999. Someone did take a few pics, but they weren't up, very close. Turned out to be a real slow night, so very few people, witnessed it. But, I'll never forget it. We chit chatted, between songs & she'd tell me quick stories. It was like we had known each other, for years. A wonderful night.

Buck & Bonnie were very much about people and relationships in their lives and in their music. I grew up about 50 miles from Bakersfield...Buck helped make my cousin a world-class songwriter. You would know many of the songs he wrote for others to sing...over 600 of them. But ot was all because of Buck’s care for another’s career and life.

Triple awesome!!! A real fan of all of them. I never had an opportunity to see them perform other than in a tv program or a live video. My misfortune for sure. I had tickets to see Meryle, but he had come down with a severe case of pneumonia and the show was cancelled. Damn!! Then he passed on shortly thereafter. I was devastated. I still listen to his songs quite often and sadly miss him. Well, Buck as well! I'd love to see Dwight, but it's difficult to leave your area working for a living. If he came to Pa, I most likely would.

Im from Bakersfield born and raised ...Met Buck a few times one time at the Crystal Palace with a buddy of mine that was going through a bad breakup and he needed someone to talk to so we met at the Crystal Palace up at the bar we ate lunch and had a couple beers my buddy was pretty upset and as we were talking Buck came walking in and said " how you boys doing"?...my buddy said what he was going through and Buck pulled up a seat and talked with us for prob a half hour...it was amazing almost like he was a grandpa we hadnt seen for awhile .we stayed there about 2 hours and when we were ready to leave I asked the bartender for the check and he said " Buck said this ones on him"....It was just one of the moments that you will remember forever......after he passed I found out that he did alot for people but one of the conditions he didnt want anyone like the media to even know about it.

The song is "Hickory Wind"-- Gram with the Byrds played it at the Grand Ol Opry when the group was in town recording "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" and promoting it. They were supposed to play a Merle song from the album but Gram changed it up and dedicated HW to his grandma. The Opry was live so he got away with it, except he pissed off the the powers that be. Not that he cared.

Bakersfield was like having Oklahoma in California. On weekends it was a wild place. It was the result of the depression era Okies moving to Calif. to find work after the great dust bowel and drought struck the Oklahoma/Kansas/Texas region. They were the migrant farm workers of the 30's, before the Mexican farm workers started coming into the region. They piled their belongings on jalopys and went to where the work was. No welfare or unemployment just a work spirit we could sorely use today.
