Great video! I love ultra low cost carriers. I fly all three of these all the time, I can't tell you the last time I've flown with a legacy carrier. These carriers were a game changer for me. They've allowed me to travel more frequently and even see my family more often. The right expectations are key. I don't value all of the frills of flying nor do I fly with a ton of stuff. All I want out of an airline is for them to get me from here to there and back for the lowest price possible, so I need a seat on a airplane that flies at least most of the time. Yes I know all about the Allegiant MD-80 issues, I flew in a ton of them and have been delayed a few times because of technical issues. But when you paid $50 for a ticket, let's be real here. What do you expect? So the basics are don't miss your flight because it could be the only one of the day or possibly the week, just fly with a backpack, don't add any extras, try to fly nonstop, print your own boarding pass and you'll get in return the most amazing value in transportation. You're right they are all about the same and now that Allegiant has converted to Airbus they basically all fly the same planes. Many in the comments mention Southwest, I agree they are an amazing airline but I fly for 1/2 sometimes a 1/3 of their price. We all have certain budgets for vacations and such. It's all about what's important to you. For me personally and my girlfriend for that matter, flying and rental cars isn't where we want to spend our vacation dollars. The cheaper the better, that way maybe we'll have an additional fancy dinner, an extra activity, or even an extra day.

Agreed. Plus they usually have multiple flights from the cities they serve. I got stranded in Baltimore due to a ground crew error that damaged the plane. They put me on stand by for two other flights and guaranteed me a spot on an 11:30 PM flight back to Hartford. Since Baltimore was only a 5-6 hour train ride and I would arrive in New Haven 4-5 hours before my flight I booked an Amtrak back. I sent Southwest a letter just requesting my $135 train ticket be covered. They refunded my entire return flight MSP-BDL on top of the $200 they gave in cancellation vouchers. If I need to save a buck I’ll fly Southwest.

I think Southwest offers the best value for the money, and the most enjoyable flight experience. I HATE being "nickel and dimed" with extra add-on fees, which even the major carriers are imposing for checking a bag or selecting a seat., and Southwest does less of tnat. Best of all, Southwest people love what they do, and it is always a joy to deal with them at check-in and inflight.

Example of why a ULCC makes sense.. RDU to Phoenix.. Delta basic economy $452 R/T.. Frontier $236 with a checked bag, carry on, priority boarded and a seat with 36 inches of pitch. Oh yeah AND THE FARE WAS FULLY REFUNDABLE? WHAT???!!!! This is not always the case, but ULCC makes sense when the cost is half a main line carrier for the same experience. I actually PREFER the pay for all food experience vs freebies. The selection is better, and you can order basically anytime during the flight. Also, at least on Frontier when you buy a soda you get the entire can. When you buy a bag of snack mix.. its a 5 ounce bag.

Most people only see the airfare ticket only when they choose to book a flight but didn't know many additional costs for flying budget airlines, sometimes traditional airline with full service are cheaper and worth your money if you consider this : 1. Luggage fees (it's always never free on budget airlines) 2. Carry on fees (some budget airlines charge you for that too) 3. Food on board ($ 10 for 1 can of coca cola in flight ? forget about it, but most people are thirsty and hungry especially if their flight is more than 3 hours) 4. Lounge (don't even think you can go to Lounge on Budget Airline unless you pay an overpriced fees) 5. You forgot to print your own boarding pass ? i hope you spend extra $25 for every boarding pass (imagine you travel with a family, you, your wife, 2 kids, it's $100 dollars more while the plane ticket itself only cost $20 bucks) 6. I want to sit next to my wife and my kids, ups.... you can't unless you pay for seat booking (usually extra 10 - 30 bucks per-seats) in the end, most people spend $100-200 more than their ticket prices, if i had to choose "Ryanair London to Paris $25 vs British Airways London to Paris $110", i rather spend $ 110 for British Airways because i knew that fare is all inclusive, what i have to do is just go to the Airport without worrying "Extra costs". On Ryanair, i might ended spend $125, $25 for plane ticket + $100 for those hidden costs that most people didn't expected until they already on the Airport.

I was at a wedding once and found myself sitting next to a VP at Spirit. It was an interesting friendly convo at first, and he also told me the trick about buying Spirit tickets at the airport counter so get the lowest price, but then he tried to convince me that the onboard experience on Spirit was no different than on Delta and I wasn't having it. I respected how proud he was of his airline, and how highly he spoke of it! But he seemed oblivious to the fact that full service airlines offer more in-cabin. I brought up leg room, IFE, wifi, free snacks & drinks, seat selection. His response? "People don't care about those things." Perhaps that's true for some, but not for me.

It's disappointing that the LCC landscape in the US is relatively weak right now. I'm an American but I currently live in Thailand. There's 3 different LCCs that each have hourly flights between Chiang Mai (my home) and Bangkok (travel often for various reasons). AirAsia and Nok Air can run about $20-30 all-in for a 1 hour flight and are fairly comfortable and reliable. But for anything more than a 1 hour flight, I don't think LCCs are worth it. They're basically just busses in the sky and have too many caveats. I still think Southwest is the all-time winner in the USA. It's kind of humorous that they are now in a certain sense the only remaining "full-service" carrier with the most passenger friendly policies and still tends to be the least expensive option. The only way I consider flying something other than Southwest is if they don't have a direct flight but another carrier does (my American home town is Phoenix, so that's uncommon, they fly basically anywhere from PHX).

I realize this comment is 4 years old but I love Spirit. I flew with the for the first time this year and have flown with them four times so far this year. They are always very friendly and the price is great. If I want to be picky there was a delay the last time I flew but to be honest it was due to the weather (they can't control it) and even though we bored 40 minutes late we landed only 20 minutes late so not the end of the world. I also have been upgraded each time I flew to a better seat (the first two times for free! The last two times I snagged an an exit for for only $5 more!). I find the trick with them is pack a personal bag only and let them seat you where ever.

Flew frontier once (emergency situation and was only flight available) and it was fine but I had a row to myself. I think for me the shorter the flight the more willing I would be to take a budget airline.

Hey Jeb.... awesome videos on "budget" airlines. What about doing a comparison of "basic economy" class between the three major US airlines? Keep up the good job educating us.

Jeb, i first of all love watching your video because I love aviation and do to lack of money I cannot fly a ton. However I do prefer booking on a major regular carrier. My sister has flown with the low cost carriers you reviewed and has been stranded on an international flight. Also personal those low cost carrier hardly ever have flights when I need them. Recent I had a 4 hour flight delay on trip back from Orlando to Atlanta. During my long delay I had a conversation with a frontier flight attendant that was fly back to Atlanta which was her home Airport. In talking with her she had to fly Delta because there were no Frontier flights for a few days but those two airlines work together to get the crews home. I also found it very interesting the level of customer service from the gate agents in that instance. The flight I final was on which was not my original flight the gate agent did a great job but the original gate agents and other Delta staff in Orlando was really bad customer service. Have you ever considered including the gate agents ratings in your videos? Happy flying!

Yes, the trick does indeed work. I was able to book a $40 Frontier ticket for $20 using this trick.

I like frontier, flown them a few times now and had a good experience each time. It's just as uncomfortable as any other domestic economy flight. But for a fraction of the cost. I'm always looking at their best deals page to see what flights they're throwing up for cheap. If your willing to watch and be flexible with your dates a bit you can get awesome deals. Haven't flown spirit or allegiant, but I can definitely recommend frontier.

Someone told me that Frontier is looking for a second hub. This hub would be in the east and has room to grow. I realized that looking at Frontier’s focus cities, their practically preparing for a hub there. RDU is building 23 hangers and 2 of them are able to hold the a320neo. The airport is also about to open up 4 gates at terminal 1 and will soon add 3 more gates to terminal 1. By 2031, more than 27 new gates should be open at RDU and for sure means Frontier could hub. It is needed for them because growing their fleet from 98 to 233 in 6 years, there won’t be enough room at Denver and they’ve just been growing a lot at RDU that it’s practically hub prep.

Living near Denver makes Frontier an easy choice as it is their main hub. Lots of destinations for quick getaway. As you said for some destinations it’s the only direct flight say DIA-PVD but more importantly this flight gets in at a reasonable time. The comparable basic fair on a bigger carrier into Boston gets me into the region well before dawn. That said I’m not sure they would be my choice if I lived anywhere else for all the reasons.

Also, I can't speak to Allegiant or Frontier, but in 2019 Spirit took me from FL to MN and there was severe weather issues. The staff worked their tail off making sure everyone was OK.

Hey Jeb, How about rating the regional carriers here in the US? I fly a lot also and certainly have my own opinions, but I'd be interested to see your ratings. For regional carriers, i'd say Mesa (when they are on time) is the best and the worst would be Trans State Airways (sounds like a made up airline name used in the movies), who have cancelled 4 of 5 flights I was booked on due to maintenance via United Airlines/United Express. Oh, I'm a paraplegic, so my rating system is based on different factors than yours when I make a video lol.

I have to agree with going mainline Basic Economy route. I purchased a basic economy ticket on Delta from Hobby to ATL for $48, Southwest was charging at least double that and they’re not even a full “low cost carrier.” There can be great deals with mainline if you look!

I'm a frequent flyer. Allegiant is one of two airlines I will never fly (the other being United because of the Dr. Dao incident a couple years ago). I won't fly Allegiant because of their safety. Yes they are phasing out their MD airplanes and replacing them with Airbus jets. But that doesn't change the fact that they have crappy maintenance that cuts corners at every turn. The antiquated MD series jets need a lot more maintenance to keep going so of course with Alligent's lack of maintenance they had many more issues and that's when we all heard about them in the media. The Airbus jets are new enough to not have many issues yet, but as they age I'm sure Allegiant will go right back to the same problems because (to my knowledge) have not improved their maintenance practices and the new planes are just a temporary fix. I fly Spirit and Fontier all the time. I like them both a lot. I never pay any of their fees. I only bring a personal item. I would give Frontier a slight edge because generally I find their fares to be slightly less than Spirit. As mentioned in the video, if I'm traveling to an event that I can't miss I will take a mainline carrier. Great video!
