People underestimate the need for food for survival because yeah it can take 3 weeks to starve compared to how quickly you can die of thirst. But if you have gone a couple of days without food you have no energy, you can't do anything. I remember going hunting on the first day i felt well after a 3 day nil by mouth fever. I ate well before i went out but I could still barely even shoulder the rifle much less hold it steady. With no food? I wouldn't have had the energy to even drive there.

Never to discourage someone from prepping but I have never liked the term 72 hour bag. A human could survive just about any climate in the US completely naked for 72 hours. Laying under leaves or evergreen branches for cold. Shade for sun. Even drinking possibly tainted water isn't a huge consern if the emergency period is just 72 hours.
@rescuepanther

I would think that at the beginning of the emergency you aren't going to know exactly how long it will last.
@korinmessina5756

Except that pretty much every year in the United States hundreds of people die from heat related illness, and thousands from hypothermia. For one, I think you are assuming pretty moderate "average" temperatures, and assuming that the individuals are particularly healthy with no underlying medical conditions. Also, where are you assuming that people in a major city or even in a more desert like environment (like parts of Arizona) are going to have access to all those leaves and evergreen branches?
@ViolentKisses87
4 жыл бұрын
@@korinmessina5756 Sorry couldn't exactly cover every climate in a KZitem comment, there are obvious exceptions but again generally if your not suffering from some preexisting condition and you have basic knowledge for "YOUR" area then 72 should be uncomfortable but survivable with nothing.
@korinmessina5756
4 жыл бұрын
@@ViolentKisses87 I do think knowledge of your area, and how to use your environment for basic necessities such as shelter, as you mentioned, is important. I just felt that the over-generalization of "just about any climate in the US.....with nothing" could be dangerous. After all, people generally concentrate better, have more energy and generally function better when not exposed to harsh environments. In a situation in which you need your 72 hour kit.....you are probably already under quite a bit of stress and have some planning and other actions you need to take. Besides, hard to take a pile of leaves or pine branches with you when you have to move to the next spot.

I'd like to add a couple things to this great video: 1. Setup two dates (fall and spring) to review the contents of the kit and make sure that everything is still good to go. Things do go wrong and I've seen batteries leak, seals fail, etc. 2. Verify expiration dates and ensure that everything has at least two years left. I was out with a friend and had a headache and they dug through the first aid kit they kept in the car for some aspirin...that had expired five years earlier. 3. Just like the tag on the cape warns, "Possession of cape does not convey the ability to fly", so to, possession of all these items does not confer the ability to use them or even understand how they are supposed to be used. At the very least, seek a good trauma medicine course and if you can, a basic bushcraft course that will teach how to live outside in an emergency.

I agree. Just make sure that you keep the cash in lower denominations such as quarters, one dollar bills, five dollar bills, 10 and $20 bills. I’ll go one further to turn that light into a low power spotlight. A perfect example is the old railway inspection lanterns. They had a bowl shape behind with a reflector and a shroud around the lantern glass that would reflect the light back out in one direction. You can make an improvise directional lantern by taking your solar light or lamp and putting a plastic or disposable bowl lined with Something reflective like foil and put it behind the light and fasten it with tape, para cord etc. to make a directional light or lamp.

You can boil water in anything that will not actually burn. I think if you’re going to have something with you it should be either a stainless steel or good grade aluminum water bottle that you can remove the top from such as a wide mouth water bottle. You can actually boil water inside that. It’s also good to have Gloves with a heat resistant palm or a fish mouth spreader or in a pinch I really flexible green sticker twig that you can turn into a makeshift device to stick down in the mouth of the bottle to pull it out of a fire. I agree though. It’s always good to have a way to boil and purify water even if you have a water filter.

We had over $25,000 worth of storm damage to our n-ew home, we were not even unpacked yet and had zero idea at where anything was at ( what tote? basement which was under water? garage? crap shed that came with property? or the new shed we put up? and was it behind what pile of new totes for the items that were unpacked that had to be shoved in those totes and piled where ever they could be because of the volume of water continually coming in the enormous hole in our roof. What we could find with ease was the emergency totes and emergency vehicle bags of which all 5 got raided (we always have a "visitor emergency bag packed") as well as the EVAC tote and the pups emergency bags. With contractors, new issue after new issue found ~ nothing got put back. The "office" is currently overrun with everything from every bag, bin and tote so they can all be put back together along with the new purchase items for things we have not yet been able to locate since they were taken out of the bags, bins and totes. I cannot tell you what a relief it was to know exactly where tarps, cordage, contractor bags, dog food, spare medication and extra socks were as well as multi-tools, knives, -flashlights, and duct tape. That storm damage was 7-19-19 and we are not yet finished with storm damage repairs, we are not unpacked yet and until I finish our emergency bags and EVAC tote are still just a dream. My husband is the one most likely to remove items (for hunting rather than check what I have packed in his hunting bag) than I am BUT after this there are STRICT RULES..... NOTHING IS TO BE REMOVED FROM THE EMERGENCY BAGS..... UNLESS I AM THE ONE TO DO SO EVERY 5-6 MONTHS TO EXCHANGE ITEMS FOR THOSE READY TO EXPIRE. * *********had we had another storm roll through worse than the first one we would have had our asses handed to us because we in no way had enough in anything to sustain us

Adding an iso-prop canister and burner will let you boil water quickly for dehydrated meals/coffee/tea. Add a multi-tool on top of the fixed blade for scissors, pliers, and similar. Add gas mask/surgical mask/face masks to keep safe in adverse conditions. Compass and maps of your local area in case you need to leave your immediate area. Store your important documents in a waterproof bag like a locsac. That's just a few things I'd add to this kit to ensure I have the right tools for an emergency.

Hey i wanted to add for medical stuff, something ive thought of and wonder if you have ever considered or looked to see if you can get it, but i think anti venoms are something no one ever considers. If you are in the woods or even urban, you might have great gear and shelter and even a wonderful Blow out kit, but get a bite from a brown recluse when emergency services arent available, and that can kill you as easily as a bullet, and even if not kill you, just make you incapacitated or very sick. Get bit by a rattlesnake or even a snake you cant idenitify or a venomous spider, and that can break you and maybe even slowly and painfully. My cousin in lousiana was bit by a brown recluse on his left leg, and didnt even notice it for almost a week, and wound up losing his whole calf muscle and walks with a cane, and he got medical treatment. Imagine not being able to get treated for something like that. Do you know of any sources to get stuff like that or if its even possible/legal to acquire anti venoms? Id also advise people to familiarize yourself with the snakes and insects in your area to know what there venom/poisons can do to the body. Maybe also epi pens would be something to have if you have allergies especially for stuff like bee stings.

I've recently added plastic bags in a zip lock with a couple 6 mil bags in a bigger zip lock bag. Grab a few (6) brand new walmart bags next time you self checkout and fold em tight into a smaller than sandwich sized ziplock.

Obviously all those items would be good to have in a SHTF situation. How the hell are you going to carry it? The water alone weighs 12 pounds. That huge roll out med kit probably weighs close to 5 lbs. The radio...another 2 lbs. I've touched on 3 items and we're already close to 20 lbs. Am I missing something?

Peanut butter if you are not allergic to it. One 12oz plastic jar if properly rationed can keep one person from becoming hypoglycemic for a month or longer.

That roll pack looks very similar to Canadian Prepper 1’s Survival roll but on a smaller scale... His is different in that you can purchase items to use in his or just buy it empty and add your own items...

Those dehydrated meals in the bag, you can pour your hot water into the bag, stir, sit for a few minutes (directions on package) and eat out of the pack. Works great 👍🏼

Absolutely. You can even rehydrate those with room-temperature water, if you don't want to make fire/use up more resources. Just soak for 40 minutes instead of the usual 20, and you're set.

Home protection maybe more important that bugout... Bugin provisions. Surge Protector to go alone with the extension cord. During emergencies, power will fluctuate... Brown outs, on/off which will damage electronics. SP can protect those items. Keep an extra Propane tank for the grill, swap it out, refill and have on hand. Scraps of cloth and sail needle. Etc. Peace of mind, what you don't have you will need.

I've given up on using large plastic containers for storing water. Eventually, they all crack and leak water. I use 3 gallon-sized glass carboys for water storage. Sure, they'll crack if you drop them on a cement floor. If they are kept in a safe storage place, where they won't fall on the floor, they won't deteriorate over time and leak.

Instead of a ham radio, how about a CB radio. Before the turn of the century they were in everyone's cars and even hand held. Wouldn't they be a better option than a ham radio?

Completely awesome video so much thanks for taking the time. survivalists are awesome!!! Because of where we are located we don't have to worry so much about the cold temperatures is not good to get cold but we're not going to freeze to death one of the things that I'm adding seeds if I have to bug out I'm going to take that I think one of the things about survival is acknowledging our strong points and our weaknesses and so that's what I'm trying to do a tool that I can and who's on our team obviously and what their strong points or weaknesses are. :)
