Well done, Mick. My husband was a time served joiner, who manufactured kitchens cupboards, exterior doors and massive staircases for barn conversions in North Yorkshire. Your confidence and skill set are growing! It’s good to see that you’re becoming less intimidated by embarking upon such projects. As far as “pirating/reverse engineering” the desk plans, you’re not doing anything that hasn’t been done for ages…no need for feeling guilty. It’s fun being able to watch along as you figure things out in your young life…my youngest son is a couple of years older than your big sister, so seeing young adults starting out in their lives is something I’m very happy to see.

I have a friend who lives in Iceland. Much like Alaska, the shipping for anything they purchase online is astronomical, often at least five times the actual price of the item. Hawaii has similar issues for anything you will find in the store that is not produced locally. It’s simply part of the trade off of living in a remote or isolated area. I’m glad you could find an acceptable solution. Your new desk will probably last a LOT longer than anything you could’ve purchased in a store or online. It’s also aesthetically pleasing. Your next project should be a wardrobe to match.

Nice desk. Word of advice on table saws: you should have the wide part of the workpiece towards the fence, and cut off the sliver. The way you did it is harder to control, and you can pinch the blade, and as you had happen, it will shoot the off-cut out, which is definitely dangerous.

By only one project you started two different routes and your desk can be used both, as nice looking table and as decent workbench. And now you have basic knowledge how to build solid workbench and how to build a fine desk for your future projects. And the main thing - you are looking really happy with results of your own work. Great job! Best wishes!
