Wow. That was cool how much the pile went down. I have one large bought plastic composter which I dump kitchen waste and some garden waste. I throw some grass and few pine needles on it mostly to keep flies down . Maggots gross me out!! I’ve never added anything much else but makes dark loamy compost . What is the ash? Is it ash or ashes from burning? I just started watching your videos tonight . The first one about potatoes from the Facebook NC garden group . Good video too. Thank you for taking time to share.. i just realized there weren’t any adds!!! Thank you for that. Shows you just want to share your experiences and help others . That pvc water system is really nice too but way too complicated for me!! CharlyChar Char on that..

Thank you for the kind words. The ash is wood ash from the fireplace. Adds potassium.

I would skip the chopping up of the leaves when using the larger compost bend but I would continue to us the chop them up in the earth machine

So that was last year. This year I had "older" leaves and many of them were more or less shredding themselves so I didnt really chop them up. Overall, I think it's better to not use whole leaves but I totally agree you don't have to chop them for the large compost bin and it will be just fine. Maybe it'll just take a little longer to finish. One thing is for sure, the Berkeley method is not for the weak of back and is way more work than necessary if you're making compost by hand.

If I want to add seaweed, is that a ‘green’ or a ‘brown’?

I never used it before but my guess would be it's a green if it's wet/fresh and brown if it's dried out

Do you have wash egg shells before putting in the compost?

No need to wash egg shells at all. Even whole eggs can go in.
