At RapidNadion, we're no strangers to R/C submarines. Our USS Baton Rouge and USS Virginia models have long patrolled the waters of Long Island's East End, diving and surfacing and even firing a few missiles along the way. But those were dynamic-diving boats; we've never tackled a static-diving submarine, and we've never tried building anything as complex as seaQuest DSV, the super-submarine from the 1990s TV show of the same name. Not, that is, until now.
Join us for the first of four videos covering the design and construction of our 51" seaQuest DSV, a 3D-printed replica of the original studio maquette which we purchased from Bob Martin of Nautilus Drydocks. In this installment, we outline all the challenges that come along with building a seaQuest model of this kind, from propulsion to depth control to the paint job (we even talk a little bit about lasers). Stay tuned for future installments as our build progresses, and be sure to let us know what you think of our R/C seaQuest model aspirations; drop us a line in the comments below!
Special thanks to Bob Martin for his assistance with this build. Visit him at nautilusdrydocks.com for more on the art and craft of radio-controlled submarines.
