Life Advice, According To Buloy And Chito Miranda.
If you never listened closely to Parokya’s “Buloy” before, now is perhaps the best chance to do so. It may sound happy and upbeat on the outside, but hides a tragic story behind a thin veil.
This is not the first instance musicians have used happy-sounding tunes to hide a tragic or morbid story, and certainly won’t be the last. However, what makes this song particularly unique is the fact that it was Parokya’s first ever song composed, being released in their debut album, Khangkhungkherrnitz, released way back in 1996.
“Buloy,” is a straightforward song, dealing with sadness and grief, and overcoming them through the advice of the narrator’s friend Buloy. According to Buloy, sadness, grief, problems, indeed, anything can be solved with nothing more than a night drinking with friends (“Lahat ng problema'y kayang lampasan, Basta't tayo'y nagsasama at nag-iinuman”).
However, the song takes a tragic twist near the end: Buloy, in spite of his never-ending cheer and charm, succumbed to his own grief, eventually taking his own life. It’s a song that talks about the fragility of the human psyche, yet at the same time, how we as a community are able to move on and remain hopeful in spite of the odds and almost insurmountable obstacles blocking our view (“Hoy buloy, nasaan ka man, Siguradong hindi ka namin malilimutan”).
