Peel the root. Shred some into a bowl and add boiling water. Steep for 15 minutes. Strain and drink.

It grows like crazy here in northern Minnesota. Me and my dad tried it last year but it was too woody. I even tried pickling it, but it was like chewing on a chunk of boot leather. May have to try it again. Thanks for the recipe!

Very nice! The stalks almost look like rhubarb or swiss chard. Do you ever use the stalks or leaves in your stir-fry?

I get lots of these in my yard. I will have to harvest some this fall. I will likely try dehydrating them just as I do with ginger. They kind of resemble my sun chokes.

So are you saying that you should big the 1st year root for food? Because I know that for medicine you should let it grow and dig in the 3rd year. Thanks for the video.

The second year it goes to seed, then plant dies.

Put the sesame seed on a cookie sheet and roast them for a few minutes in the oven until golden brown. It releases the sugars, and gives it a 'smoky' flavor. Enjoy.

I like to toast mine in a dry wok before cooking everything else. Just set them aside and incorporate them at the end when the dish is finished.

@@davidledoux1736 Maybe chef put the oil in after. That was in 92. Lol I don't remember him setting it aside, though. As he was flipping and stirring, the sesame seeds jumped out in the brown sauce. They weren't dry.

Very true! however when in doubt take a taste of the stocks--- both are eatable--- you will definitely know rhubarb

@@donaldporta I also believe that Native North Americans and even others, like early Ukrainian pioneers to Canada and America, used things like this as medicine. I also remember walking through worded areas and the parts of the burdock plant would stick to my clothing. Cheers!

Burdock leaves are fuzzy on the underside, rhubarb isnt. So its pretty easy to tell the difference if you really look

Imagine a pogo stick with an automobile leaf spring bolted to it instead of a coil spring. That is what I use to dig big deep roots.

We have cockaburr here but the leaves are smaller don’t look like that. Are they edible also ? There must be different varieties?

Here in Merrie Olde England a very popular kids drink was Dandelion and Burdock. I’m thinking that this was originally a medicinal tonic as both plants are highly nutritious and nowadays overlooked....more for those of us rejecting Coke and other chemical infusions ! Great video Don! Found your channel via a search for pemmican....I’m going to attempt an Anglo version with duck fat, almonds and a sprinkle of dried blueberries.....fingers crossed!!
