Thanks for sharing this! I'm very much looking forward now to getting a Pyramid Butterfly or even a few - in my new 120 gal. mixed reef. Butterfly fish have long been on my wish list, but since most are considered not to be reef safe & I want my tank(s) to appear as real/ natural as possible. This is very exciting news & I'll be sharing this info on my Reef groups on FB!

Definitely eye catching, not only to have a butterfly in the tank, but the amount of white colour is rarely seen in any other fishes. Does your trio “school” together most of the time? What is the difference with the ones from Australia?

Hi Mark - what is the name of blue tube coral seen in 0:31? Is it alive or artificial? Thanks in advance.

A beauty no doubt, but I think 4-6" is a bit oversized ... I like to cut the "1% rule" in half (e.g. 2" max size for a 400) so the fish aren't the predominant display feature on the reef. In the wild, reefs are massive structures with a tiny biomass of fish. While a good reef tank can certainly handle the larger bioload, aesthetically reef tanks with fish which pop in and out of view are (IMHO) more engaging.

I bought a pair of yellow pyramid butterfly fish. Put them through 6 weeks of Qt only for my yellow tang to go mad and attack them as soon as I put them in the tank. It was so bad that one died of its injuries within a few hours and the other died from the constant bullying with a couple of days. Never seen my tang attack any other fish I put in the tank. Not sure what to do as I really want a pair of these lovely fish in my reef.

How big is your tank? If you want to try again put your tang in the sump for a few weeks until the pyramids get some established but even this is not always a guarantee.

How big is your yellow tang ? Because I was thinking about putting a pair of pyramid butterfly’s in my 150 reef tank but I have a tomini tang in there and it’s about 4- 5 inches hoping he doesn’t pick at them , he sadly harassed my bicolor fox face when I put him in for about a couple days and then stopped

Dont buy wild caught butterflies, they dont aclimate well and will likely die sonner than if you left them where they belong. Ive been to a few reefs across the world and ive seen many of these fish big and healthy roaming huge spaces. Its dishearting to see them end up in peoples aquariums. Please be mindful, dont buy wild caught
