Some of the best words of wisdom in a long time. Unfortunately, there are too many paid “influencers” pushing slugs these days, in .25 nd especially in .22, making you think that your .22 will easily be a 100 yard lazer if you use the slug they’re pushing. Having said that, the good old 18 grain JSB and Hades pellets continue to do the job very well in most every rifle between 800-900 fps, (factory setting), and 23-30 FPE, while keeping good shot count, versus “trying” different slugs and having to crank up the reg pressure, and drastically lower your shot count….. so you can feel like you’re part of the “new wave” of modern air rifle shooting. The size, and solid shape of slugs weren’t designed for the perfected pellet barrels in our modern rifles. There’s nothing wrong with rifle manufacturers and ammo manufacturers coming out with new things and new product lines to tempt us to spend more of our hard earned money….. but “we the people” are being used as free, unpaid Guinea pigs and testers to try and duplicate what “marketing influencers” seem to be able to do with their rifles and slugs. In the case of the .22 buy a “tin” of .217’s, and then try .218’s, but hang on…”what’s his name had the best accuracy with .2165 size slugs…..(which none of the dealers carry, so you had to go directly to the slug manufacture and but from them at a higher price……. Todays .25 and .22 rifles (even lower priced rifles) are exceptional pellet shooters……and they were never designed or sold to the masses as 100 yard guns. The worlds most accurate target rifles, the 10 meter Olympic match .177 rifles by Steyr, Walther, Feinwerkbau, ETC, are not designed and cannot shoot slugs. Maybe “one day” when it becomes profitable for FX, Daystate, BRK, BSA, Edgun, Air Arms and European exotic match rifle companies to manufacture slug designed rifles, we’ll all benefit. But just like Electric cars, that “one day” hasn’t arrived yet!….Hey, not right or wrong…..just one man’s opinion!

Yea, sadly it is alot of work to get slugs to shoot well in MOST rifles. I have a few rifles that would do 1 inch groups at 115 yards but not many. Those that did maybe me just lucky but even then you cant just shoot moa without some good weather conditions as well. I agree lots of marketing and hype for us guys to try and see if it works pretty sad actually. Thanks again for watching, commenting and the sub.

They're not just slugs. They're hollowpoints And they EXPAND. And they fly farther and hit harder!! They are very efficient. They're deadly for hunting. Pellets are fine but hollowpoints are way more fun and they make a loud POP.!! Way more accurate than pellets at longer range and everyone knows it. People don't make their own pellets but boy making your own slugs is crazy popular 😜 And almost every slug maker in the US will answer questions and work with you. And so will Joe at Predator International. Slugs are very popular here and around the world 🌎 😀

The pops slugs make the super long range power they carry is super exciting. And I make my own they only cost me 1.5 cents a slug 33 grain 25 hollow points that's about as cheap as shooting 14.3 22 crossman pellets

Think that the problem is that there's no real standards for airgun bores. Pellets are available in half a dozen increments surrounding the nominal caliber size for a reason, not surprisingly so are slugs. On fixed (factory) tune airguns it's standard procedure to test a bunch of pellets looking for the golden pellet(s) that suited the tune and harmonics of that particular gun - and we know that sister guns from the same assembly line might have different preferences. With user tunable airguns (mostly PCPs) we can (usually) select a suitable pellet and tune the gun to shoot it well. Think it's the same thing with slugs but because they are spin-stabilized and shot at higher velocities the tuning is much more critical. I got a .22/700 Panthera (and a variety of slugs 😊 ) to explore tuning and shooting slugs. I don’t need the range or the power that slugs bring so I see the whole thing as a learning experience. I already have a pellet liner for the Panthera and plan to tune to JSB Monster Redesign pellets once I've satisfied my curiosity with slugs.

I've been studying and listening to the folks at FX Airguns. They specifically have a barrel liner for slugs and they test with slugs. They have the standard liner which they say it shoots pellets and some slugs. However you make a good point that you need to search for the best slug that your rifle likes. But if you incorporate pellets you have to deal with the turbulence that the badminton design of pellets.

Yes, i would say that FX is ahead of the game with matching slugs with their rifles. I would offer thou that these are hybrid slugs and hybrid liners and not super high bc slugs that are heavier. So when we go to 50 Grain + slugs things start to get weird as far as accuracy. They are the leader but still much work to be done. Hope this helps.

@@ShootingTargets727 I've seen many shooters (and I will be one soon) that are shooting Zan or other top brands and getting excellent results with the current slug designs. But the slugs keep evolving which I think is good. I've also seen where Matt will come in and test with Nielson slugs not hybrid slugs. So while FX themselves offer their hybrid slug testing goes beyond those. But I have only heard of slugs going up to 40 grns not 50 grns.

@@michaeleber4752 Yea, and the real slugs go up in weight substantially. The heavier the slug and better the BC it seems to get really picky on what liner it likes and speed. We are really just on the early stages if we compare ourselves to the firearm industry which you can get a .223 and slam stuff at 300 yards right out of the box.

Like I always said, you talk about the things that no one else talks about and you point the elephant in the room that everybody ignores. Unfortunately too late for me, I already wasted plenty of money on slugs. Was I unhappy with the use of pellets before? no, but the marketing got my best judgment. It makes you feel left behind and old fashioned if you don’t move over to slugs. My advice to myself is have one powerful dedicated long ramge gun for slugs, pair it to an accurate long distance slug and shoot only that combination. For the rest just stick to pellets. (I said advice to myself lol) Thanks again a great video.

INCREDIBLE POINT that guns are designed without being tested to shoot anything well. I think Zan and Patriot are the 1st 2 companies are doing whatever they can to make sure the slugs shoot well thru certain platforms. Matt and Roelf are doing what they can to make sure their slugs shoot well thru FX liners. I know Zan is doing the same.

Right but as matt mentioned many times there is so much non-standardization going on with barrel sizes of .22 .216 .218 that it makes it more challenging. reminds me of the days of digital vhs or beta... It depends how accurate do you need to be? Do you want to punch paper and tear the bullseye out, or do you want to shoot minute of rabbit? I have found that slugs can be a bit of work, but once you find the right velocity and rounds your barrel likes, they are great for hunting. If I am shooting rabbits, I am not concerned if I can stack at 100 yards. It is fine to be shooting 2 MOA, because you will still knock the rabbit over. Shooting NSA 33.5 slugs from my .25 Cal Crown, I took a possum out of a tree at 146 yards at night, using an IR attachment. That being said, in shooting .177 slugs I have found my liner to be a bit more picky. I get reasonable results from many slugs, fantastic results from NSA 15 and 20.5, and all of the HN slugs are grouping like a shotgun blast.

My opinion on this is quite simply, if I am shooting at a close range, up to 60 m then my airguns are going to do this without a problem! If I need more distance, then I use my rim fires, a gun is a tool for the job you want to do and in my opinion the airguns are trying to hard to be something that is beyond their ability, choose a gun for What you need it to do, the airguns that are available are just a money making machine but if you know what you are looking for, a brilliant tool
