I think Ming Dynasty furniture was quite influential back in the days although the original design tends to be more elaborate (mainly built for the noble and the wealthy in a Chinese style house) there were some "minimalist" aesthetics that became more prominent in subsequent designs including those of Japan's or even Nordics. In fact, some of the more modern Chinese design evolved from the Ming period was also inspired by Nordics and Japans

We just purchased a tv console table from Wayfair. Be aware that when they say real wood and the item needs assembly, they’re often using very soft wood. Ours was pine and damages very easily. Also, when Wayfair says assembly read the reviews and get a true picture of just how much assembly is required. Ignore the girl who says oh my boyfriend assembled it in 1 hour because the guy had to have been a carpenter. I wish I could show you a picture of our piece pre-assembly, because it was literally a pile of sticks. About 8 hours later we had a piece of furniture. It does look nice, and is sturdy, but there is no room for error in assembly.

As someone with a very vintage and traditional style, I completely agree with the fake distressed thing. My favorite part about all of my furniture is the fact that it was pre-owned by someone’s grandmother in a past life, and now I get all of their beautiful furniture, which is extraordinarily well made (it has survived 70 years with minimal damage) and cheep because its thrifted! Why in gods name would I pay more money to get a piece of furniture that’s made in some cheap factory and artificial looking? I've bought from Wayfair for years. The biggest tip from me is that if you see something there, look for it elsewhere. They have never had the lowest price on anything I have been able to find elsewhere. Also - do not accept broken things! Return them! I am amazed at the number of 5 star reviews that start with... one corner came broken, but I just put that facing the wall. No! You paid for all corners to be unbroken. Call them out on this. Despite price and damage issues, I have bought some decent rugs from them. I also bought a Kelly Clarkson wall mirror from them that is one of my favorite furniture/decor buys in recent years.
@Lily-pf8bd
3 жыл бұрын
If you don’t mind, would you share how you search for the items you want elsewhere? Thanks
@airybrook
3 жыл бұрын
@@Lily-pf8bd First - remove the name of the item. For example..Fairfield textured ceramic lamps...drop the Fairfield. It was just added by the seller. If you don't see anything - add specifics from the description. Sometimes manufacturer is in there - that is very helpful. Actual color names, actual dimensions and sometimes even actual weights. If that all fails, look at the closest things that came up, go onto those sites and look at their suggestions for items related to your search. I bought a pair of lamps last week - $109 on Wayfair. Same lamps were $78 on Lowe's.

I think it all boils down to natural, sustainable decor because it just never goes out of style. If we boil everything down to how natural it looks & how good in quality it is; I am certain that all styles ranging from modern to mid-century whatever they will all look good regardless what our preferences are. This is why fast fashion & faux- shit doesn't work for a longer time. Because that's just how it's built. And even if we calculate the cost of replacing vs. one classic piece I think classic would win (Having seen most of your videos, I find we share almost similar views)

Nick, Can you do a video on interiors that are generally masculine without being too dark and batcavey? I've moved into an older house with sparse windows, so next to no natural light and 8 foot ceilings. The grey toned interior is appealing and stylish considering I don't have to do trendy colors, but it doesn't work for me. I feel like there are a lot of men like me who don't need a motorcycle in the living room or framed engine diagrams on the walls and don't live in a warehouse loft, but also don't want something more exciting than neutrals or Scandinavian.

Also - they have recently added the option to sort by things that are actually deliverable in a few days. That helps a lot. It is funny to watch the number of blue chairs that match your filtered search drop from 12,752 to 4 when you add in the deliverable in 2-5 days filter.

I would agree with the leather/faux leather. I've never had one last a long time.

Shankle rug reminds me of every psychologist's office's waiting room in 1999 - if you listen closely, you can actually hear 'Iris' by the Goo Goo Dolls playing. I don't actually hate it, but I think it's more nostalgia than actual aesthetic preference.

OMG, I'm with u 1,000% on the ATROCIOUS glass coffee tables and the even more horrific mirrored furniture 😱 who on Earth dreamed these up and thought they would be suitable home decor trends?

Always enjoy your videos. I've learned a lot from you. What I especially like about "Buy This Not That" is you point out many pros and cons with alternative suggestions. Thank you Nick :)

I have to say I dislike all of it…Oh well. I’m still trying to find a style that excites me. Maybe I’ve just seen it all before and I’m bored with everything.

Ugh, that glass coffee table looks like the kind of thing a cheap dentist waiting room would have, ordered from an office supply place in the 90s

I bought a "distressed wood piece with the different colored doors in the polls a couple years ago. And then I just painted the outside and left the doors in the various colors it looks great. But yeah distress can really look like it ran through a sawmill.

I feel proud of myself because I’m planning on buying one of the rustic alternative cabinets you showed to the tacky shabby chic ones 😊

wishing for your video on using antique or vintage furniture, especially that piece you fell in love with that maybe doesn't fit the styles you discussed (boho, scandi, etc.) Like a mid 1800's corner cabinet? Or a wild early 50's piece that is not quite midcentury modern?

I would enjoy you doing wayfair high/low comparisons, as in: here is a great look, you can pay stupid price, OR you can also find this close item for reasonable price. Thanks

Nick, which cost effective furniture websites do you recommend? I am finishing up a home remodel, so I need to begin shopping for my living room & bedroom. Thank you for sharing 🌻

I'm not Nick and I dislike Facebook, but there are some deals on marketplace. I am moving and have bought over $12,000 in essentially new furniture on there for $4,000. You gotta look for a while and avoid sketchy neighborhoods....but the deals are there. I also bring my future son-in-law - he has a truck and is licensed for concealed carry. That's how we shop in Texas.
