And for us folk who cannot afford a nearly new EV, hope to see a similar video on what pitfalls to avoid when buying a used EV that is out of warranty and the potential issues regarding out-of-warranty repairs. For example, are there manufacturers that have a better reputation than others when it comes to providing service documentation and software to third party repairers, making available spare parts, and not imposing artificial barriers to repair that make repairs unreasonably expensive that end up with cars being written off. Manufacturers should come with an IFixit score that demonstrates repairability of their cars.

I was appalled at how little dealers knew or care to tell me about the car. Nothing about tech features, efficiency or any of the strong points of the car. If i was that ignorant about the stuff at my job i wouldbe fired

We bought our EV using the 'order what you want online from the manufacturer and have it built to spec' method. We then called around to the local dealers to negotiate away any extra delivery fees or dealership markups, playing them a bit against each other. It worked great for us.

I’ve bought four EVs from manufacturer or dealer over the years. The “direct from the manufacturer” were obviously the best (no, Tesla was *NOT* one of them!) For dealers, we considered two different EVs, and visited three different dealers (one for one brand, two for the other brand.) We ended up going for the brand that we visited two dealers for. One dealer was *TERRIBLE*. Even though they were officially an “EV certified” location, with two chargers on-site, their sales person obviously wanted nothing to do with selling us an EV, and those chargers were nearly always ICEd by dealer vehicles. The other dealer was *GREAT*. Knowledgeable, didn’t try to “upsell” us a non-EV, good info about EVs, charging, etc. Even had an EV loaner when we had to take ours in for service. The other bought from dealer was a “we want this EV” for sure, called a couple of that brand’s dealers. Two were not at all helpful - one outright told us to go to a different dealer for an EV. The third went out of their way to be helpful. At that point, I knew plenty about EVs and that model, so the salesperson didn’t need to explain anything, but what info they gave was good. (In fact, he was slightly disappointed when we bought it - it had just come into inventory that day, and *THEIR SPOUSE* wanted to buy it! The spouse ended up buying a PHEV instead - while we were signing the paperwork for the EV. That salesperson even went through the standard “selling any car” routine, including listing off the benefits of a prepaid maintenance plan, “free oil changes for…. Yeah, you don’t need this.” 😂

We used a local credit union, and they beat anything the dealer offered. Areas are different, but our local credit union offered a 'better' rate for purchases of EVs.

When I bought my new Bolt, the dealer said that GM was going to pay for standard installation of a L2 charger through Qmerit. I live in a townhouse. After I sent off the info to the Qmerit contractor, I learned that he meant GM covers standard installation for a single family house. I decided not to pay the difference. Level 1 charging is enough for now.

Yes, you missed a very important factor....You must determine whether or not the dealer network you choose will be able to repair and support the car you are purchasing well into the future. Aside from lemon law options which can be a big hassle, an unrepairable car (especially an electric one) is basically a very big expensive paperweight, especially as it ages beyond warranty.

This is a big issue in Australia when it comes to motorcycles. One dealer went so far as to become the national wholesaler for a particular brand of motorcycle so everyone had to buy consumables from that dealer. Another well known Japanese brand I had to buy a clutch lever for a three month old motorcycle. “Sorry we don’t stock that part and it’s $52 pay now please and you will have it in three months”. I went to the wreckers right next door, bought a used part for $8 and hit it with a grinder till it fit. 14 years later that part is still in service now I need a starter motor brush set 🙄 Bad for the brand. Bad for the owner. If this is how the dealer plans to stay in business, they don’t deserve to trade

Good information about freezing your credit report. Unfortunately that appears to be a US only thing, or at least it is not a thing in Canada. There was a big deal about it after a big data breach at the credit reporting agencies a couple years back, and that's when it became free for everyone in the US to do it, however in Canada even though we were affected by the same data breach, the same credit agencies refused to allow any form of credit report freeze here, so we are wide open to that avenue of fraud.

you might have trouble buying an EV from a dealerships. they may not want to sell you an EV, they might know less than you about an EV, or they might really prefer to sell you an hybrid or ICE vehicle.

Did homework on Ora Cat, went to dealer for a test drive, drove car. Started talking with dealer about the known issue with the front demister not being powerful enough if the car was left outside. We were ready to sign until the dealer lied by saying “it’s not a problem”. He also said the car will get better range if you deliberately speed at the bottom of hills on the highway

If I got a polestar 2 for the right price, I would pay cash then start accumulating as much service information on it as possible. Or buy one and a spare and all the manuals. Or two matching Nissan Leaf thingys then sell one of the batteries off. The issue is storing the bits
