The Channels were a New York City group from Harlem that had a unique style all to themselves. In their early songs, the background would sing the verse in harmony and the lead/falsetto would take over the bridge (Two “channels” of sound). While never having many hits, the Channels were among the most popular East Coast groups. Earl Lewis, their lead, wrote many of their well-remembered songs like "The Closer You Are" and "The Gleam in Your Eye" for the Whirlin Disc label in 1956. After 4 releases on Whirlin Disc, they moved to the Gone Label and then to Fury Records in 1959 where they began a more traditional type of singing. This was their first of 2 releases for Fury. Here, Earl is backed by: James Wiley, Wesley Neil, and Joe Odom at the great Burlington concert.
