If You look at the altitude, You will see that it is a valley ("dolac" is basically a valley), after climbing from the sea level to about 350m asl and then it goes down to Primorski Dolac (150m asl) and then back again up to Perković (250m asl). This segment (Labin Dalmatinski - Primorski Dolac) is actually the steepest part of the whole line.

Nice to see still those railways that have staff and managers present in the stations, In many European countries technologies have replaced human labor. The ancient values that made the railways great in Europe have been lost. Always a wonderful video and magnificent Croatian landscapes!

The stationmaster also usually operates the signalling at these small isolated stations, so getting rid of them is not possible.

@@jonathanp896 Yes, but it is better this way, but unfortunately in Italy with the total diffusion of ERTMS and SCMT level1 and level2, signalling and preparation of routes and maneuver management is all centralized in regional control rooms and for the TAV a single direction for the entire network

Almost 20 years ago a project of signalling modernization (PZB with centralized control) was started, but it hasn't been finished yet (You can see on some stations new signals with "X" on them or just frames without lights). For a long period, trade unions opposed these projects as it would mean less jobs, but Croatian Railway has a huge problem with very aging workforce and nobody new wanting to do the job, so now they must finish the modernization as they won't have people to manage the stations.

Mr. Rail Relations, this was another wonderful vid. What a beautiful day, the weather was nice. I really enjoyed the scenery the most after Drns. But it was all good. It was less rocks and more agriculture. The snow-covered mountains near Knin are really beautiful. Thank you again for the enjoyable ride. I'm looking forward to part 2. I enjoy what you do here.

Beautiful video. This is the first time I see a "new" armoured train. I suppose that in summer trains and stations are not so empty. At certain points, the Dalmatian landscape recalls that of the Gargano, in Puglia

There were quite a lot of such improvisations at the begining of the 1991-1995 war as we were under arms embargo so various organizations (shipyard in this case) tried to build such improvisations - tractors converted to APCs and like. But with some captured and smuggled weapons they weren't actually needed.

Regarding the use of railways in war, there was an attempt by Serbian forces in 1993. with a waggon loaded with explosives sent downhill to Zadar but it got stopped by a anti-tank hedgehog at a tunnel before the city. Also they had their own armoured train with 40mm Bofors and a M-18 Hellcat tank loaded on the flat waggon.

From 1:21:50 you can see minefields that are apparently being cleared. Even almost 30 years after the war, it's still not over. 😐 And at Kosovo village: wonderful view of the Dinara massif.

@themazeRP hopefully they are cleared. I know it is complicated, but It is sad that it takes so many years. I don't know for Croatia, but I was recently speaking about Bosnia, in Mostar there are still mine fields left practically in the town.

My first visit to Croatia. For a few kilometres I was puzzled as to why a ferry port like Split was served by a single track railway. I suspect the reason lies in the heavy engineering needed to construct the track, very evident further in. I loved the staffed stations, with the stationmaster and his paddle.

I would say there was never that much traffic to require double-track as even in its peak it wasn't main port for Croatia (or previously Yugoslavia) and traffic wasn't that heavy. With the construction of highways most (passenger but also cargo) traffic moved to highways and the railway line has remained in bit of a sorry state (You can still see vintage signalling). There are some modernization plans (new signalling and track repairs) which should get the travel time Split-Zagreb to about 4,5 hours (from over 6 hours today).

It is bizarre we still have them, just maintaining the wire controls is complicated and probably more expensive then installing the new signalling. Even on this line You can see works on installation of new signalling which is ongoing for the last 20 years and still not finished.

Technology that is over 100 years old and that works reliably with a little regular maintenance. I myself have operated such old signal boxes here in Germany for many years.

On this part definitively, this is only railway link from Knin to Split. North of Knin You probably travelled on Una line ("unska pruga") as that was the mainline, while today (video published last week) trains travel on Lika line ("lička pruga").

@@ZvonimirZelenika Youre probably right I was just a little kid I was born here my mom in Split, I remember we took a Swissair 747 from JFK to Zurich and then a JAT Boeing 727 from Zurich to Zagreb and then a train from Zagreb to Split that took 6 hrs I was surprised they were still using steam locomotives.I dont remember much about the train trip other than people smoked so much I almost got sick.

This was prepared electrification through line(now abandoned from croatia's side)) on 'unska pruga' which is on todays croatian&bosnian border. Just before the war '91. Never activated because of it.

Yes, built in 1991 by Split Shipyard and Croatian Railways. Former 664-001 and 2 freight cars. However, they were not used in the war.

Hmmm I tried to give you a link but it seems to be deleted immediately. Try to google „armoured train Split“. There is a very good site from Andrew Grantham. This train was built in 1991 by the shipyard Brodosplit in Split for the homeland war in Croatia.

Una line was much shorter and better route for traffic comming from the east (via Novska or (Bosanski) Novi Grad) , difference on Zagreb-Split route isn't that large - 30km on 400km line. With upcoming modernization of Zagreb-Karlovac-Ogulin/Oštarije section and with modernization in Lika difference wouldn't be that big - as it name says, Una line follows the river - first Una and later Butižnica and it's quite curvy, though as a line it is better routed with only one major climb in stead of two (Malovan and Kapela).

Gore u Lici (od Gračaca do iza Perušića) je pruga građevinski ispeglana za 160km/h, ovdje južno od Knina bi se vjerojatno dio pruge mogao srediti barem za 120km/h. Današnje maksimalno ograničenje (100km/h) je radi nepostojanja modernog upravljanja prometom (SS-a), kojeg se ugrađuje zadnjih 20 godina ali nikako da se završi (u NPOO financiranju su osigurana sredstva pa bi to trebalo konačno završiti u slijedećih par godina). No veći problem od maksimalne brzine su brojna lokalna ograničenja (20-40km/h), neispravni ili neosigurani ŽCPR-ovi, skretnice u kolodvorima gdje se gubi jako puno vremena.
