Chinese New Year is a crazy time in China, and the Chaoshan (Chaozhou) region is infamous for doing things their own way, often taking things to a whole new level. This is a very special, very localized tradition for the Cai family. You see, in China there are only a few hundred family names, and often an entire town has the same last name. This is the case for Xianna's family - the Cai family.
This is where the name Caina Tea comes from - a combination of Xianna's family name, Cai, and her middle name, Na. Her full name is Cai Xian Na. Take out the Xian and you get Caina, pronounced China. Neat, huh?
So this is a fairly crazy festival that symbolizes the passing of the ancient family spirit incense bowl from the South side to the North side, or vice versa, which happens on the same day every year. It seems to me to be the biggest festival in the region, as the local traditions tend to be the most important in China.
I thought the worst was over by this point, but they had somehow brought even more firecrackers out onto the streets. They especially loaded the bridge. I don't know how the place doesn't burn to the ground every year, and, amazingly, nobody seemed to be hurt! Though I know there was ear damage and possibly lung damage. Crazy experience, and it's my wife's hometown!
