Cambridge Audio makes good phono preamplifiers. I've been using their Azur 551P (which I believe is similar to their current Solo) model for several years, and I've been pleased with it. I like the headphone amplifier on the Duo, which is great for the desk setup Eric has.

Thanks for sharing! Does the volume knob allows you also to "level" the signal output of the turntable to the CD player, when connecting the device to an integrated stereo amp?
@crutchfield
Жыл бұрын
The preamp outputs are fixed and are not controlled by the volume dial. This would need to be connected to a device like an integrated amp or similar that has its own volume control

We do not expect there to be any difference in the sound you hear through that system. The change that you would get is the ability to connect headphones to the Duo instead of having to use the WiiM amp and speakers to hear the album

Hi Crutchfield, are there integrated amplifiers that can run 4 speakers instead of 2? I know I can achieve this in AVR's but I was thinking of adding two more speakers to my stereo speakers, perhaps something like Michi can handle or are they all for bi-wiring only?
@crutchfield
2 жыл бұрын
Some integrated amps will offer speaker A and speaker B connections. They connect to the same amp channel within the integrated amp and will be wired internally in parallel. This is handy for when you might want to play one set or another set. Some will even support playing both sets of speakers when each speaker's resistance is 8 ohms. What speakers are you wanting to use? Will you be ok with both left speakers producing the same audio and both right speakers producing the same audio? Both speakers will be playing at the same volume level; is that ok?

@@crutchfield Correct, that is exactly what I am looking for, spending all my life with home theaters, I have got addicted to surround sound via AVR DSP, for starters I have Klipch 6000F fronts and Klipsch RP600M, it would have super amazing if there was db control on the surrounds, to drop them by 6db, due to proximity. However if that is not possible then I want to give this setup a try. The other option that comes to my mind is that get a pre-amp, use balanced out for pair1 and unbalanced for pair2 and perhaps it lets you control the gain settings? or perhaps a y connector. The aim is to get the goodness of surround and power and quality of Integrated amp? is AV processor and Poweramp my way? I hope you could relate to me when I say that an 80W DenonA110 or even NAD C388 Integrated stereo has more complete sound to it. How do I take the same sound to multiple channels? Cheers - Upraj and thank you for being prompt and awesome

Nice choice on the speakers, Upraj. To get the true surround setup you prefer, you would need to stick with a surround sound pre amp. From there, you could connect one amp per pair of speakers or use a multi channel amp. Are there any specific features or inputs you want to be sure you get with the pre amp? Any plans to add more speakers?

@@crutchfield I have spend a lot of days reading. So a follow up question: I believe that 2Ch Stereo I enjoy but I miss surrounds. Would I be correct to say if that Stereo Pre-amp (P5)+PowerAmp = 10/10 Star Audio Then a AVR processor Preamp+ Poweramp is also equal to = 10/10 Star Audio or the DSP of the AVR has compromises or processing that only Stereo Pre-amp can achieve. The sound from my AVR in direct mode is the only I love, I wish there was All Channel Direct mode :D If a good Surround sound pre-amp + Power amp is the direction then I guess I can control the db levels of surround since they would be closer to my ears. Sound taste wise I am not a fan of Marantz / Denon sound. I am am/was super happy with Integra's. I guess Integra DRC should be my next move? or would you have an processor to recommend with that sound signature of my choice? I love Rotel Sound as well so I would not mind Rotel Pre-amp with surrounds, I wish Michi do to them one day? Thank you so much for sticking to help me out. Any recommendation for such sound signatures please?

Using separates will help with overall sound quality. So will using multiple amps for the speakers. Separating the speakers so each pair has their own amp will do wonders for the sound clarity too. Home theater sound must go through processing to time and level aligning all the channels as well as allowing the gear to keep things like lip-sync issues from occurring while watching movies. Rotel has carried their sound to their preamp processors and power amps. I think you will enjoy their theater preamp processor shown here: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc227/p_440P15762B/item.html

That would be a fantastic match for many turntables, but you could go with something like this one too at a lower price point and it would work well: www.crutchfield.com/I-rYALc384/p_252PBDCB/Pro-Ject-Phono-Box-DC-Black.html?tp=204

I have a Fluance RT85 and powered speakers and separately a Fluance preamp that does not have volume setting. I only have volume on my speakers. I would like to switch to a preamp for headphones but when I’m not using it for headphones I want to be able to have it for my powered speakers. Because this preamp that is being presented has a volume on it I don’t want to blow my speakers out. Can Is it okay to use a preamp with volume dial if I have powered speakers with their own volume?
@crutchfield

If you are talking about a stereo preamp, it can be used with powered speakers that have their own volume control. The thing that you must keep in mind is the volume level of each so you know which to adjust while trying to avoid getting close to max volume on either volume control. max volume levels can cause clipping of the sound which we definitely want to avoid

A reminder that impedance is only part of the equation. I would argue sensitivity matters more. The bad part about sensitivity is that different manufactures measure it in different ways.

The gear you're using for the test is not good enough to reveal the differences in the two preamps. In order to make a meaningful assessment, you need a much better turntable, tonearm and cartridge, to start. Plus, the headphone amp in both units is terrrible, you can't tell anything by using it. Use an amp and speakers, properly set up.
