I used to be a professional colorist for a print shop in Massachusetts. One thing that should be mentioned for color critical work is the color and brightness of the ambient light, and oddly enough, what you are wearing. If you have a room that is too bright, or too warm or cool or the light is has a strong color cast it can severely skew your color perception. Also be very careful not to wear brightly colored clothing (wear dark gray or black) when sitting in front of a highly reflective monitor like an iMac. That color cast will affect your editing. Same goes for anything in the background. We used to work in dark or dimly side lit rooms painted in a special XRite neutral gray paint, wearing aprons in the same color. Sometimes we would even completely isolate the screen using a hood and a face mask so only our eyes showed. Yes, that’s extreme, but when you are working with corporate clients spending millions on an advertising campaign, you have to get it right the first time. ;)

Nigel, your content is great and so is the quality of your footage. A lot of work and time goes into that. That said, I’m happy if you got one or two companies wanting to sponsor your channel. I don’t mind to see or hear a little publicity in exchange for good content. As for the printing, I have just started to get some pictures printed. Unfortunately where I live that isn’t that easy as good printing services are sparse and in the country here there are no online services neither (except you wanna print a calendar on glossy paper with heart frames around each pic ;) I was close to buy a canon printer but stopped the project after not being able to buy quality photo paper in the country. Had to import it and well, just too expensive. Anyhow, hope that printing service I found is good as I would love to see some of my pics printed and not only on the screen. Keep up that great work and looking forward to next Sunday 🤘🏻

Very detailed Nigel, but do you think this process can be simplified? The tolerances between getting a spider and not are they worth the spend? Are we going down the road of using technology rather than our ability to see an test and have fun creating proofs and learning what these colour profiles are. I understand the professional take on this. Nigel one thing I have to say, you really work hard to put this information together and the quality and information as always is first class. I’ve worked in 4 colour process for many years, involving spot colours and foils. Sometimes I feel we worry far to much and proofing and seeing with your own eyes, should always be the final decision of optimisation.

Photographers often go out and spend big money on a new lens or the latest body in an effort to improve their photography. I would suggest to anyone who wants to improve their images from Capture to Print to invest in calibration/Profiling. A Colormunki Display from x-rite is £100 which is more than 20 times Less than my most used zoom lens and Profiling your printer is equal to the cost of printing a test page and a first class stamp to post it to the paper supplier. To calibration is a no brainer. Just think if your almost accurate display shows reds slightly undersaturated, you will push reds further in post processing to compensate. Next if your printer which is almost colour accurate slightly over saturates reds the combination of the two will push reds to an undesirable amount in your final print. And one final point other than colour calibration as Nigel mentioned in the video, display brightness is a very important factor in making sure your prints are not to light or dark, which a calibration device will help you set correctly. All the best. Mike

You can't get away from calibrating your monitor. Color shift is not a huge problem with a good monitor, but as Nigel said briefly, brightness is a key factor. On my Macs, I usually decrease the brightness for about 6 steps to reach 120 candelas. Without a calibrator, you'll never know how bright your monitor is.

Hi, so i unterstand it correct. The raw had all colors. Your screen Shows Adobe RGB for the Most Part en based in that you edit your Fotos. But when you Print it, it Shows the colors like you edited them in the Adobe RGB gamut. So if i have a Monitor which covers Adobe RGB and a printer Profile from fotospeed of Ilrord in my case. Things should line up. The ICC Profiles can be downloaded from Their Sites i Saw. So requesting one should Not be Needed.

8:52 well how they calibrated it at the factory has no bearing on how each individual uses their monitor, under what light etc, so you should always calibrate your monitor, even if its "factory calibrated" because they don't know at the factory what light you're working under at home. a calibration becomes specific to your working conditions, right?

One thing should be said that also depends also from which ink you're using etc (if it's water and uv proof ink etc, so you need differnt profiles laso for that,). the're0s an option, to calibrated your printer by your scanner, but it should be calibrated, too, so i guess that would complicated things even further, but you can get constant results this way, too, since you can da calibration in the house. For general hobby public, i guess something like color munki is nice all-in one solution. As for sponsorship goes: for you it would (or will may is say now) be probably beneficial, since you can have more steady income and all that, but from my personal point of view, seeing similar youtubers etc, one they go this squarespcae, dpreview etc route (which is achievement by itself for sure, don't get me wrong) , they become much more generic and probably loose a bit of their true devotion to the content, which does show on the long run. But this is just personal view, i just prefere that simpe honesty from people, without being forced with content or to get that hidden agendas in otherwise "free" program. But i understand, we al need to put food on the table in the end of the day.

Hi Thomas, I have neither room or the urge to invest thousands in an A1 printer here, my wife would go bonkers :) - that said, the article was really interesting even to me as a non-printer. I wonder, can you give some thought to making another one aimed at people like me who want larger prints and need to send their images to a printshop (like Whitewall or similar). How to set up the image properly prior to converting it from the raw into the jpeg you send away for printing, and the various stages involved? That would be ever so helpful to me, and I'm sure many other photographers who could not warrant a large scale printer, and the cost and the space that would entail to get into it properly like yourself. Sponsorship is a fact of life these days, you have to live, which means earning money. The quality of your videos can't continue as they are if you're not earning something from them, no one can donate that much time and effort indefinitely, so off you go to squarespace, and the 'a.n.other' sponsor if it means you can continue to provide such great content into the future. I'm sure everyone would agree with that, good luck getting the deals in place.

Coming from someone who wants to start printing their photos I find it very daunting. It’s not just doing the photo processing with your chosen program ie Lr or Capture one etc and send it to your printer. It’s a good quality screen, buy a calibration tool, the correct paper for the photo, sending print off to a printing service to get correct profile (no idea how much they charge for that per paper type) a good quality printer. In the end it just seems so expensive and out of reach to get good quality photos. I am just an amateur wanting to produce good quality prints, I don’t have the professional jobs that recoup the money I need to pay out on the equipment. After watching and I’m not having a go at you because I love your work and have been subscribed for a long time, it’s just that good quality and accurate prints seem out of reach cost wise to set up.

It’s ok to be sponsored. What I don’t like is when people are sponsored and they pretend they aren’t. As long as you are up front about it no one will care much. As always great tips in this video.

Great video and content. I've watched so many videos with pieces of the information but never one with all the pieces together like this, and it isn't an hour long. My two pennies on the sponsorship, get it!!! Photography gear isn't cheap and rent needs to be paid. I don't mind a couple short ads here and there.

Hi Nigel, take the sponsorship if it’s going to keep this channel going. Quick question on your Canon printer (not the epson 😜) what’s the ongoing cost like and do you think it’s justified. I heard the canon you have Pro 1000 takes 12 cartridges and a full replacement is $750 for all 12. How often do you find you need to replace in say 6 months or a year?

The Squarespace ads that others do are really intrusive, so go for it. It must work though, I've recently moved a couple of sites to them lol

You should definitely go ahead with sponsorship! I don't mind the sponsor parts of videos one bit, if it helps you produce content then that is great.

Hey Nigel! Great video (albeit I’m 2 years late!) - big fan of your channel and I found this super useful! I’m currently trying to understand why, when colour managing correctly - editing in pro photo, saving for web and using srgb etc, why my edits look so much different on my phone compared to my monitor - they’re far more saturated in some cases. I can’t find a straight answer online as to why this might be - either because 1. They’re just highly saturated and I don’t notice until I step away from the editing process (I’ve double checked and some cases admittedly this is the case) but other times the image looks perfect on my monitor, but then looks too much on a phone screen. Is there a fix or recommendation for this? Or is it just the fact of the matter than phones don’t colour manage? Keen to get your thoughts if you have any on this? Thanks Nigel!

Thank you so much for the video. Don't you have a problem with palette master creating a wrong profile when profiled to anything other colour space than the native gamut? I see for me, It always creates profile based off of native gamut. And hence if I select srgb when profiling for example, anything that's colour managed will give a dark and desaturated interpretation.

Great video Nigel, I have a question relative to your Canon Pro 1000. How many prints can you expect from the ink ? I was thinking of purchasing but I'm concerned about the cost of ink vs the output. I realize that it depends on size of prints etc. However, a full set of cartridges runs approx $699 US. Keep up the great work. BTW I think you should take the sponsorship.

Nigel, crack on confirm your sponsorship! For good content and a quality channel, I don‘t mind the small sponsorship advert; I‘m even happy to sit all the way through an normal advert if it supports you. It is important that we (the viewers) give back to enable you to continue to provide a quality product for OUR benefit!

Color management is so key Nigel. I find the Apple monitors to be just a bit too blue/cool but the calibration helps to bring that down. The Ben Q’s are definitely great. You presented this topic in a great way👍👍

Incredible content Nigel as always. I have a question and maybe some people curious as well on what I’m about to ask. I have an IMac 27” which is incredible and I was always happy when I edited my photos and updated to the web and colors were accurate. But when I Used Costco to print some of the cheapest photos to review them so I know what to correct before putting them for sale. And the results were totally different from what I see on my IMac. The pictures were too dark and the colors were off from what I have on the Mac. So I decided to make dual monitors setup my Mac for the web and second monitor for printing. But I just want to buy the monitor to reduce cost and connect it to my Mac. Couple of questions following. Would I be able to color calibrate second monitor for printing not to affect my iMac monitor? Or I just don’t need second monitor and Costco did something wrong. The pictures were just too dark and desaturated, way different then on monitor. Is it Maybe Costco printer that doesn’t resolve the colors that I see on my iMac and I have to input some color profile? Or I have to give to whatever print lab my iMac color profile or settings (don’t judge me for what I said maybe I phrased it incorrectly) so they print my picture with accurate colors that I have on my Mac? Because you mentioned in the video that you didn’t notice huge difference when you calibrated your monitor. Thank you in advance.

Hi Nigel. Great video and explanation. As a 57 year old, primarily film photographer who is a beginner when it comes to calibration and printing, that was just what the doctor ordered, so thank you. Incidentally, the one thing that I really NEED is a very simple, "idiot's guide" to how to get photos from the point of exporting from Lightroom CC to Instagram. I've watched a couple of supposedly informative videos but ended up more confused. Do you have a PDF or something with screen prints that is an utterly basic guide to the process at all, please? Sponsorship? My only advice / comment is that it has to work for you and any sponsor. So long as you're 100% comfortable with the content of your output - i.e. they aren't being heavy-handed with brand placement or control over what you do, or where / when you do it, then go for it. I really hope it works for you and adds value (and financial gain) to what you do.

Good for you Nigel. I'm glad your channel will be sponsored. I really enjoy your channel, the content is always interesting and inspiring. I have not heard of the Adobe Colour Printer Utility as I have not seriously printed any of my images yet. I am thinking of getting into the printing so this was a very informative video. Thanks so much :) I have the HP Envy Photo 7155 so I'm not sure how well it will print photos, but I guess I will find out :).

Great video again. One question I do have is how is the ICC profile sent to you and imported in to LR? is it on a flash drive or an email? I have no clue. I'm on a steep learning curve as far as printing goes, and I think I'm taking most of it in, but it does make my head hurt sometimes. Hoping to afford the Canon PIXMA Pro 10s. As for sponsorship, I really don't mind as long as it doesn't detract from the content. people gotta make a living.
